Chapter 2

Just as the car was about to drive out of the cemetery, a familiar black Rolls-Royce suddenly shot out from a side road, screeched to a dangerous stop, and blocked the road in front.

The driver was so scared he slammed on the horn, but when the window of the Rolls-Royce rolled down and Jackson’s cold, arrogant face appeared, his curses cut off instantly, replaced by pure terror.

He had clearly recognized this powerful man.

The next second, he fumbled in a panic to unlock the doors and stammered to me, “S–sorry, miss, you’d better get out here. I… I can’t take this order…”

My heart sank hard.

The door on my side was yanked open from the outside. Jackson climbed out of the Rolls-Royce with a stormy expression, Lucas following behind him with the same furious look on his face.

The way father and son stared at me was like a whip, lashing across my body, as if I had done something unforgivable.

Jackson strode over, open my door in one pull, grabbed my wrist, and dragged me out.

“Ah!” I was caught off guard, stumbled out of the car, and almost fell to the ground.

“Ella, where are you going?” Jackson’s voice was as cold as ice. “Amy’s still feeling unwell, she needs someone to take care of her. Instead of staying at home, you run out to fool around with another man?”

I hadn’t even recovered from the shock when Lucas rushed up to accuse me, “Mom! How can you be so selfish! Do you know you ran out in a huff and made Aunt Amy cry from worrying? She feels even worse now! Can’t you be a little more sensible?!”

I was stunned by this series of accusations and, for a moment, didn’t even know how to react.

“Fool around? Selfish?” My voice trembled slightly from trying to contain my emotions. “You and that Amy worked together to kill my father! And now you stand here pretending to be the good guys and expect me to go back and take care of her?!”

As soon as I said that, a flash of shock crossed both Jackson’s and Lucas’s faces.

But that shock lasted less than a few seconds before Jackson’s expression grew even darker.

“What nonsense are you talking about!” he cut me off harshly. “I told you, I already had the driver take your father home. And you’re still slandering Amy right now!”

“Slander?” My chest hurt so much I could hardly breathe. “Then right now, immediately, have your secretary go to where my father lives and see if he’s there or not!”

Jackson dialed with a black face.

A few minutes later, the secretary came back—but behind him was the fragile Amy.

“Jackson, Ella… please don’t fight…”

Her face was pale. Jackson and Lucas instantly dropped me and both rushed to her side.

“Amy! Why did you come?” Jackson’s tone was full of anxiety that I had ever heard. “Even if the doctor says you’re fine, you still can’t just come out!”

Lucas hurried to chime in, “Yeah, Aunt Amy, your health comes first.”

Amy leaned weakly into Jackson’s arms and coughed lightly. “I heard Ella misunderstood, so I had to come and explain…”

As she spoke, she reached a hand toward me.

“Ella, I know your father is getting old and his health hasn’t been great. So I privately contacted a very good nursing home and arranged for him to stay there for a while. I’ve already paid all the fees. I just wanted him to get better care…”

I stared at her fake, gentle face and suddenly flung her hand away.

“Ah!” Amy let out a little cry, staggering back in an exaggerated way.

Jackson and Lucas scrambled to catch her.

“Mom! What are you doing!” Lucas was the first to jump out and scold me. “How can you treat Aunt Amy like that! She’s not in good health and she’s still thinking of you, and you’re just hurting her heart like this!”

Jackson also held Amy protectively in his arms. “Have you made enough of scene?!”

Amy nestled into Jackson’s chest and lifted tearful eyes. “Ella, I know you’re angry. Jackson and I are each other’s first love, but I’m really not the kind of woman who would destroy someone else’s family… If hitting me can help you vent, then go ahead and hit me…”

As she said this, she suddenly grabbed my hand and swung it toward her own face.

The sudden movement shocked me so much I froze and forgot to pull back.

“Enough!” Jackson blocked between us and drew Amy even more tightly into his arms.

“Mom! You’ve gone too far!” Lucas’s roar rang out at the same time.

The two people who should have been closest to me were now guarding another woman like the most loyal knights.

Watching this absurd scene playing out in front of me, my heart went completely cold.

“I’m calling the police.” I took out my phone and spoke in an icy voice. “I’m reporting you for illegal obstruction, harassment, and attempted murder.”

Jackson sneered and folded his arms, watching coldly from the side.

With trembling fingers, I dialed the emergency number and clearly stated the situation and our location. The operator recorded it and said they would send someone to handle it.

Time crept by minute by minute in this suffocating standoff.

Ten minutes later, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number.

When I answered, the voice on the other end sounded cautious. “Ma’am, we received your report, but this situation… falls under a family dispute. It’s not convenient for us to intervene.”

“This is not a family dispute! This is a criminal case!” I was practically screaming.

“Sorry, there’s really nothing we can do.” The call was cut off.

Unwilling to accept it, I dialed the police again

This time, there wasn’t even a transfer—just a cold automated voice: “The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable.”

In that instant, I understood.

So that was it. No wonder they were so fearless.

Power and money had long since paved the way for them and covered up the truth.

In this place, I was no match for them at all.

I bit down hard on my lower lip, forcing back and back again, as tears stubbornly hovered at the rim of my eyes, refusing to fall.

Jackson looked at me struggling not to cry, and something in his gaze seemed to waver for a moment.

He cleared his throat, his tone softening slightly.

“All right, enough. Stop making a fuss and come home with me.” He paused. “There may be servants at home, but the food you cook is still what I like best.”

Seeing that I didn’t move, he sounded a little impatient. “What gift do you want? I’ll buy it for you. A limited-edition bag? Or jewelry?”

I let out a very quiet, cold laugh.

At the same time, that tear I’d held back for so long finally slipped from the corner of my eye.

That tear traced a path down my cold cheek and lost its warmth in an instant.

Just like my heart, going from burning hope to utter ice.

I didn’t look at any of them again. Instead, I bent down to pick up my phone and took the divorce agreement out of my bag.

My hand was shaking slightly, but inside, I had never been more sure.

From this day on, my tears would never fall for these people again.
