Chapter 2
Just as I got home, Terence, who was always busy with work, surprisingly had some rare free time and was sitting on the couch waiting for me.
A gentle smile played at the corners of his lips, but his tone carried a barely noticeable tension and probing quality.
"Yetta, my people told me you just went out. Was there something you needed to take care of?"
"Nothing much, already handled it."
I laughed lightly and deliberately asked him back, "Why are you suddenly so interested in where I go? Are you hiding some secret you're afraid I'll find out?"
Terence's breath caught. After a moment of silence, he pulled me into his arms like he always did, his tone affectionate.
"What are you overthinking now? What secrets could I possibly have?"
"It's just that my guy got the ring wrong today and made you unhappy. I wanted you to come back quickly so I could make it up to you."
I didn't say anything, but my thoughts uncontrollably drifted back to the truth I'd had people investigate.
While preparing for this engagement, Terence had actually prepared two rings.
One was for me, and the other was for Doris.
The most ridiculous part was that Terence and I had been together for ten years, but the ring he prepared for me was just made with ordinary diamonds.
The one for Doris was made with extremely rare natural red diamonds.
Thinking of this, my expression turned cold uncontrollably, and I slowly pulled away from his embrace.
Terence keenly sensed something was wrong and asked with a hint of probing, "Yetta, what's wrong? Did someone say something to you?"
I looked at him with a half-smile. Doris was quite clever after all—she hadn't told him about my visit.
"Nothing, I'm just a bit curious about who this Doris is, the name engraved on that wrong ring?"
"Can you give me an explanation?"
Terence's body stiffened for a moment, but he quickly recovered.
"Doris is a doctor I hired at a high salary. Last year, when you were seriously injured and hospitalized, thanks to her care, you recovered so quickly. To show my gratitude, I had a ring made for her, too."
"Yetta, while your jealousy makes me happy, my love for you is completely genuine!"
I sneered inwardly but put on a deeply moved expression.
"I see. I'm sorry, Terence. I shouldn't have doubted you."
"Since Miss Doris saved my life, I should thank her personally. Why don't you come with me right now, and we can treat her to dinner together?"
Terence clearly paused, the smile on his face almost impossible to maintain.
"That's not necessary. Given your status and position, thanking her is already doing her a favor."
"Haven't you always wanted to see the Northern Lights in Iceland? Once I'm done with this busy period, I'll go with you."
My smile didn't change, but I thought of the information my people had sent—Doris also loved the Northern Lights.
For this, Terence made time almost every month to take her to Iceland for a few days.
A place that once felt sacred in my heart was now completely tainted and disgusting.
"Sure, I heard that wishes made under the Northern Lights really come true. I wonder if that's true or not."
Terence chuckled. His tense nerves finally relaxed as he pulled me tighter into his arms.
"Yetta, since when do you believe in such things? Just tell me what you want. Even if it's my heart, I'll dig it out and offer it to you myself."
Looking at Terence's affectionate gaze, I suddenly felt sick.
I never knew his acting was this good—good enough to cheat on me with Doris while deceiving me flawlessly.
If it weren't for accidentally getting the rings mixed up this time, who knows how long he would have kept fooling me!
My hand unconsciously clenched into a fist. I suppressed the anger in my heart, made up some excuse, and got up to leave.
As soon as I returned to the bedroom, my people sent another message.
"Miss, we just found out that Mr. Terence plans to take Doris abroad in three days for a wedding secretly."
"Not only that, but he's also illegally transferred some of your overseas assets to Doris's name, and their illegitimate child will be publicly announced by Mr. Terence as the next heir at the wedding."
My head was buzzing. I barely held back the urge to go downstairs and slap Terence across the face, saying through gritted teeth, "Perfect! Since Terence Hall is getting married, of course, I need to be there to give him a big gift!"
