Chapter 290

Tessa’s POV

I let out a scream of terror without really meaning to. My whole body was paralyzed as Lucias drove at a speed that shouldn’t have been possible in the city. He hit a few things along the way, and I feared some of those things were people. He didn’t seem to care about anyone’s life, not even mine.

As the car cut a corner, I jerked and hit my head hard against the window. I felt the blood before I saw it. It was all over the window and panic started to consume me. The more the car jerked around and grew faster, the more my wrists dug into the cuffs. I knew they were going to be bruised and scratched as well.

The car seemed to be getting faster and then it felt like it was airborne. I let out a yelp of panic as the car thudded back to the ground, letting out a terrifying crashing sound. I heard the cracking of my wrist before felt the searing pain.

I cried out for him to slow down, but it was he wasn’t listening to a word I was saying. I wasn’t sure how this was even possible. My mother put a parental protection spell on me; he wasn’t supposed to be able to just take me like this without my father’s permission.

Unless he found a way to bypass this… but how?

I heard my phone ringing from the front seat, and I knew it was either Joseph or Esme. There was no way I would be able to get it though, not with my hands cuffed and my head woozy from hitting it so hard.

After it stopped ringing and then it started to ring again, Lucias groaned in frustration, he took my phone and threw it out the window.

I gasped but I didn’t have time to react any further because he cut another corner, making my head hit the same spot in the window and this time, the entire window cracked from the force. I felt my shoulder dislocating and heard the loud popping sound. The feeling of my arm disappeared, and my entire body began to shake.

Everything felt like it was out of my control entirely; my head, along with my emotions, was whirling. They were whirling around like wild tornadoes, determined to destroy anything in its path. They were going crazy like a hurricane, turning the skies grey and blowing the trees in all sorts of directions.

I couldn’t seem to stop the panic attack from consuming me altogether. Tears streamed down my face; I felt completely helpless. I’m not sure how long we’ve been driving for, or where we even were.

My head hit the seat and I felt even dizzier than it hit the window again and I blacked out for what felt like a couple of minutes.

Everything was blurry and fading in and out. All I could think about was the storm that was brewing deep within me; the storm that was out of my control. A wild tornado and a hurricane ready to wreak havoc and destroy anything and everything.

“Shit,” I heard Lucias’ hiss as the car grew faster.

I attempted to focus on the road in front of us and I saw him weaving through the light traffic that was forming, but most importantly I saw how dark the skies had gotten. It wasn’t because it was nighttime though, the skies were dark grey, and the winds were picking up.

Where did this storm suddenly come from?

Lucias crashed into someone on the side of the road, making me jolt again and I felt a stabbing pain in my spine, making me scream out in pain. That didn’t stop him though; he continued to drive even though it was clear the car was very damaged.

I had never seen wind quite so intense before, they almost matched the very panic attack I was currently having. Everything was out of my control; everything was whirling around me wildly and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

Then, I gasped when I saw the formation of a tornado in the sky, and I screamed when I saw it touching the ground and coming straight toward us.

I closed my eyes and continued to scream until my throat was raw and I no longer had a voice.

This time, I heard Lucias’ scream as well as the breaks squeezed along the pavement and then the entire car spun around as the tornado lifted it off the ground and twirled us around until we were blue in the face.

I begged for it to stop, but I knew a storm like this couldn’t hear me as I begged for my life. I opened my eyes slightly to see that Lucias had completely passed out. He had blood on his face, so I knew he hit his head on something, and it knocked him out.

This was it… I was going to die.

I closed my eyes, and I accepted my fate because there was nothing more for me to do. I took a deep breath and willed my body to calm, despite how much pain I was in, despite how woozy I was feeling, despite all the fear that consumed me… I allowed my body to relax and my mind to clear.

Just as I did, it was like a light switch. The hurricane stopped blowing its insane winds and the tornado simmered until there was nothing left. However, we were still in the air so as soon as the tornado disappeared, the entire car came crashing to the ground.

As soon as it made contact, everything went black.

…..

Joseph’s POV

I called Esmeralda immediately after leaving the academy. She was a lot closer to Tessa and I knew she’d be able to get there first. I was out of range, so I wasn’t able to teleport to her. But once I was in proximity, I would be able to.

Once I got closer to the city, I knew right away that something was wrong. The air felt thick and my connection with Tessa was waning. My phone started to ring, and I grabbed it without looking to see who it was.

“Tell me it’s good news,” I said firmly, my voice coming out harsher than I meant it to.

“He has her!!” I recognized Esme’s voice right away. “I went to her work, and I saw him driving away with her in the backseat, Joseph. He’s driving like a maniac but I’m on his tail.”

“Shit,” I growled through my teeth as I pressed the gas harder and drove faster in the direction of the city.

“She has to be hurt at this point, he’s hit so many things and I think I see blood on the back window but it’s hard to tell. I’m having trouble keeping up.”

“Keep on her tail,” I said firmly.

“I’m casting a spell so you can have a direct tie to us,” she said, but then she paused and gasped. “He just ran someone over,” she cried.

“We will deal with the aftermath later.”

“I tried calling a couple of times, but I think he threw her phone out the window,” Esme added, making me curse under her breath.

“Just keep driving.”

She was crying but I could hear the gas of her car accelerating.

I heard her whispering something that I couldn’t quite hear but then shortly after I saw a purple string of light in front of my car.

“What is that?” I asked, staring at the string of light confused.

“Follow it, it’s attached to my car. It’ll take you to me,” she explained.

I went faster and followed the string of lights through the traffic. It rounded corners and I followed it with ease.

“Holy shit!” Esme cursed and I didn’t need to ask what was wrong because I could see it for myself.

There was a heavy storm approaching; I had never seen anything quite like it. It was like a light switch flipping and I watched as the skies went from cloudless to blue, to dark grey and gloomy. The wind was next, and it nearly took my car with it; I had to fight the steering wheel to keep it steady.

“There’s a tornado!” Esme gasped and sure enough, I watched as I tornado formed in the sky and started to touch the ground.

I looked straight ahead, and I saw Esme’s car pulling to a complete stop. I pulled up next to her and quickly got out.

“Where’s Tessa?” I growled.

With a shaky hand, Esme pointed in front of her, and I saw a car being lifted off the ground in the tornado and spinning around at a quick rate.

But just as it began, it ended. Like someone had flipped another switch, the tornado and hurricane ended, and the cloudless blue skies returned.

The car Tessa was in was high in the sky though and was plummeting to the ground. The car was completely crushed, and I fought the urge to crumble to the ground with it.

“Tessa!!!!” I yelled as I teleported to the car.

I went through the rubble, trying desperately to get to her.

I finally found her passed out and covered in cuts and bruises in the backseat. Her wrists were cuffed to the seat and the backseat door was crushing her.

She looked so broken my entire heart shattered.

“No…” I whispered brokenly as I ripped the cuffs off her wrists using all my vampire strength. Esme was by my side in an instant and she let out a sob when she saw Tessa lying helpless and broken in the seat.

I bent the back of the door and ripped through the remaining seats to loosen its hold on Tessa’s body. I did not doubt in my mind that most of her bones were broken. She was covered in blood too so maybe even a severe head injury.

I cradled her in my arms, pulled her from the car, and placed her in the middle of the street.

“Tessa…” I whispered, kissing her lips gently and holding her close to me. “Please… you need to live… you need to…”

Before I even finished that sentence, she groaned. I froze and looked down at her; Tessa was moving.

“Holy shit, she’s alive,” Esme said, kneeling to the ground.

Tessa’s eyes fluttered open and she moaned in pain.

“Don’t move,” Esme ordered. “Your body has been through too much.”

“Call 911,” I said, aware that my voice was shaky.

“Not a good idea,” Esme said, shaking her head. “She shouldn’t even be alive. She only is because she’s the heavenly heart. Something tells me she’s going to be healing at a very fast rate. I don’t think human doctors should know about this.”

She was right, Tessa’s very broken wrist looked like it was already healed as she reached up and touched my face. Her eyes were opened now and filled with tears.

“It’s going to be okay,” I assured her, kissing her gently. “We are going to get you some help.”

“I’ll get a hold of the witch doctor. He can help,” Esme said as she stood to grab her phone. Then she looked back at the car that crashed and scowled. “Hold on,” she muttered as she walked toward the car.

I watched her as she rummaged through the front seat and then she pulled out a very limp and even more broken and bloodied body. She wasn’t gentle with him as she threw him to the ground and glared down at him.

Esme examined him carefully before looking over at me with narrowed eyes.

“Lucias is dead.”
