Chapter 292

Tessa’s POV

“Sorry, I’m late,” Esme said as she rushed into the living room. “I hope I didn’t miss anything. I was just cleaning up the neighboring town and making sure nobody remembered anything.”

“You are right on time,” Emmet said, giving her an affectionate smile.

I didn’t miss the fact that Esme was blushing from his words. I raised my brows at her and her eyes widened at my expression. I wanted to ask her questions about her relationship with the witch doctor, but I knew now was not a good time.

“So, what were we talking about?” Esme asked, clearing her throat and getting the attention off herself.

I bit back a grin, but then the memory of what we were discussing slammed into my mind and I felt the weight of it pushing me into the couch.

“We were talking about the Heavenly Light,” Emmet informed her. “I’ve only ever heard of the Heavenly Light and never the Heavenly Heart. I was just trying to figure out why that was.”

“Easy,” Esme said simply. “Alison didn’t want anyone to remember about the Heavenly Heart. Tessa’s mom cast a worldwide curse that made everyone forget about it. Except those in her circle.”

“So, why are we trusting this doctor with this information?” Joseph asked; I knew from his tone that he wasn’t happy about this conversation.

“Because Emmet needs to know everything if he’s going to help us determine what exactly Tessa can do,” Esme said, folding her arms across her chest. “We can trust him.”

“Are you sure we can actually trust him and you aren’t just blinded?” Joseph asked.

Esme’s mouth fell open and then she looked furious as she quickly stood to her feet.

“If you had any sense in that small brain of yours vampire—”

“Esmeralda it’s fine, Joseph is right. He’s just being cautious and we can’t blame him for that,” Emmet said, interrupting her rant. “He has no reason to trust me. We have never met until just now.”

Esme glared at Joseph and I knew she was just being protective over Emmet. I found it kind of sweet but I was also on the fence about trusting this stranger with one of my deepest and darkest secrets.

Emmet turned to face Joseph; his eyes compassionate.

“You have my word that I only want what’s best for Tessa. I won’t do or say anything without your permission. I only want to help you determine what kind of things Tessa is capable of doing. If my suspicions are correct, we are going to need Tessa more than anything. I don’t want anything bad happening to her.”

“What suspicions?” I asked.

Emmet looked at Esme and for a second, I thought they were having a secret conversation. They both seemed to be on the same page about something.

“I think we are both thinking the same thing,” Esme chuckled as if she could now read my mind. “But it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.”

Emmet nodded and then looked back at me.

“I have a feeling that the Heavenly Light is your child.”

My mouth nearly hit the ground from his words and I had to stifle a laugh.

“I don’t have a child,” I blurted, feeling my cheeks grow impossibly pink.

“Not yet. But you will soon enough,” he told me simply. “And when you do, I have a suspicion that he or she will be born as the Heavenly Light.”

“And what? Live a thousand years?” I asked. “That’s impossible. Witches aren’t immortal… wait… are they?”

I looked at Joseph confused because I hadn’t heard anything of the such.

Joseph shook his head, but then also looked confused.

“I know they live longer than an average human. They certainly age well. But immortal, no,” Joseph agreed. Turning to Emmet, he asked, “Are you saying our child will be immortal?”

Emmet thought about it for a moment and then he looked at me.

“Would it be okay if I took a blood test? I have a supernatural blood detector that can tell me exactly how strong your blood is and what it can do. Esme tells me that your blood is different and I’d like to see why.”

It was a weird subject change but to answer his question, I gave him my arm.

“Do what you have to do,” I told him quickly.

He laughed at my eagerness and nodded as he took out his equipment from his duffle bag. I was impressed with all the things he could fit into the bag, including a whole monitor.

I felt the pinch of the needle and a few minutes later he had a small sample of my blood that he put into a fancy machine.

“How long does it take?” Joseph asked.

“Depends,” Emmet said. “Could take minutes, could take hours. I guess it depends on how much it finds and what it finds.”

“Hours?” I asked, staring at him with my mouth hanging open. “It’s already getting late.” I wasn’t sure I’d make it hours, I was exhausted and I couldn’t miss work tomorrow.

“How about we get some food?” Esme suggested. “We could order pizza or something and just chill while we wait.”

Now that I thought of it, my stomach was growling hungrily at the mention of food.

“That sounds great,” I agreed.

Joseph grabbed his phone and took pizza topping suggestions before he left the room to call the local pizza place. Esme sat in Joseph’s spot on the couch so she could take my hand in hers.

Joseph returned moments later and sat on the other side of me, grabbing my hand with his and holding it gently as I leaned my head on his shoulder.

“So, there was a prophet about the Heavenly Heart as well, or else there wouldn’t have been a war, right?” Joseph asked.

“War?” Emmet asked, raising his brows.

“I guess you didn’t explain everything to him after all,” Joseph said, directing that statement to Esme.

She shook her head.

“There wasn’t much time,” she admitted. “I mainly just told him that Tessa is the Heavenly Heart and we needed to find out the extent of her abilities.”

“What war?” Emmet continued to ask.

“The war between witches and vampires,” Esme explained. “Long ago, before Tessa was even a thought, her grandmother Constance, our coven leader at the time, had a vision about her daughter, Alison’s future child. She was said to hold the Heavenly Heart which was the most powerful possession to hold. It could either destroy the world or purify it. Whoever yields it, controls it all and will be the most powerful being on this earth. Though, nobody really knew what the Heavenly Heart really did. Because of this, Alison was a target. When the prophecy got out, many men wanted Alison for themselves. They wanted to father this child so they could raise it to be whatever they wanted. They wanted to control the Heavenly Heart. So, Constance did the only thing she could do and hid her only child in the human world. Alison went to a human college and tried to live a normal life.”

“That’s how she met my father,” I continued to explain. “They went to the same college and they fell in love.”

“Precisely,” Esme agreed. “She got pregnant and they got married. When word got back to her coven about this, they weren’t too happy. I’m not exactly sure how word spread around the nation, but once it did, mayhem broke loose and everybody wanted that child. They would have done whatever it took to get that child, even if it meant killing Alison and her entire coven.”

“That’s how I came into the picture,” Joseph continued for her, explaining his part of the story. “My old tribe leader, Benji, heard about this prophecy and he wanted that Heavenly Heart for himself. He was successful in kidnapping Alison when she was very pregnant. I was his right-hand man and he thought I would be on board with his plan to manually deliver the baby and then dispose of Alison’s body. I wasn’t, of course.”

Joseph paused and shook his head at the memory; no doubt remembering how my mother looked in that cage he found her in.

“Benji had to go out of town and asked me to watch Alison. As soon as he was gone, I got a hold of my current leader, Bernard. We were able to get Alison out of there and back with her husband on the farm.”

“At this point, the coven was very much aware of Alison and the prophecy. They were aware that she was kidnapped and she was in danger. They supposedly put their selfishness aside and wanted to protect her and her family. So, they went to live at the Coven. They hid her away and when she gave birth to Tessa, the 3 of them stayed at the Coven,” Esme explained.

“My father said he had to sell the animals on the farm because he couldn’t be there to take care of them,” I said.

Esme nodded.

“Yes, we couldn’t let any of you leave for your protection. Not until Alison finished making that curse that could wipe the memories of the Heavenly Heart from everyone. Only then, would you be safe,” Esme explained. “I didn’t know that Lucias had alternate plans though. He was in love with Alison, and he hated her husband. He wanted both Alison and the Heavenly Heart.”

The doorbell rang, interrupting the story.

“That must be the pizza,” Joseph said, standing to his feet.

He went to grab the pizza at the front door while Esme continued.

“At this point, Alison’s husband found out that Lucias’ intentions were not pure and tried to warn Alison. But Lucias got to him first and knocked him out. They sent him away to a doctor to get healed, saying that he just passed out for no reason. Alison didn’t believe him though and did her own research. Her husband left a trail of what he had found out and once Alison put the pieces together that Lucias had made a deal with Benji and had been working with the vampires… she sent her owl to give Joseph a note. Asking him to protect her daughter. So, he came, and he took Tessa away to protect her. The curse was almost ready and she was in touch with her circle, including her mother, and told her everything she had found out and that Tessa was somewhere safe.”

Joseph returned with the pizza and the smell made my stomach growl hungrily. He opened the box and we all dug in, eating while we continued to tell Emmet the story of my past.

“But anyways, once Lucias and the vampires found out that the Heavenly Heart was gone, war broke out. Alison and her circle went to the farm where they could cast an elemental circle which was needed in order for this curse to work. I was part of that circle and we didn’t know if the curse would even work. It was never tested and she completed it in such a hurry, that there was no telling for sure. But war broke out and it was mayhem. But Alison was able to cast the curse seconds before she was killed.”

“I returned and killed Benji myself,” Joseph admitted. “I wasn’t going to let that man live. There were a few vampires that were currently in my tribe that fought against Benji and his men. Not that it mattered. It was mainly everyone for themselves. But I just wanted to protect Alison and her child. Rick was healed and I brought him back to the farm to watch Tessa while this war went on… he was gutted when Alison was killed…”

We all fell silent in respect to my mother.

Then, there was a ding and Emmet perked up as he looked down at his machine.

“Results are in!”
