Chapter 4 I’m Pregnant
In an elegant coffee shop, Sophie sat by the window, staring blankly at the street, lost in thought.
"Sorry I'm late, got stuck in traffic."
A gentle voice came through, pulling Sophie back from her thoughts.
She smiled and called over a server, ordering a coffee for Matthew. "It's fine, take a break first."
After catching his breath, Matthew noticed her pale complexion and asked with concern, "You don't look well, are you okay?"
Sophie pressed her lips together, took out a USB drive from her bag, and placed it in front of Matthew. "This is a recording of Preston's affair. With this, I think the divorce should be easier, right?"
Seeing Sophie's relatively calm expression, Matthew frowned deeply, understanding why she looked so terrible.
For a woman to personally collect evidence of her husband's affair - how cruel!
But he also believed that a quick pain was better than prolonged suffering.
Matthew solemnly picked up the USB drive, his tone serious. "Sophie, I'll help you."
He no longer addressed her distantly as Mrs. Davis.
Sophie's lips turned pale, forcing a bitter smile. "Thank you, senior."
"Don't be so formal, just call me Matthew."
She'd been out for a while and worried Preston might get suspicious, so she got up to leave.
But just as she stood up, everything went dark for a moment. Luckily, she grabbed the table edge and didn't fall, though her body still swayed.
"Sophie!" Matthew nervously stood up and reached out to steady her.
After a good while, the dizziness gradually faded. Cold sweat soaked through her clothes, but she still stubbornly didn't want to trouble Matthew. "I'm fine..."
Seeing her face turn deathly pale, Matthew didn't believe her. He said firmly, "I'm taking you to the hospital!"
"Really, it's not necessary..."
He didn't let go of her arm, his tone carrying some frustrated disappointment. "Sophie, the person I remember wasn't this fragile. Are you really going to neglect your own health over a failed marriage?"
This was the first time Matthew had spoken harshly to her since they'd reconnected.
But it warmed Sophie's heart. The words were scolding, but they showed undisguised concern.
She really didn't dare gamble with the baby in her belly. She lowered her eyes and touched her still-flat stomach, saying softly, "Then I'll trouble you."
Matthew helped her out of the coffee shop and into the car, then set the GPS for the nearest hospital.
As he was about to drive, Matthew remembered he should register online first. He asked casually, "Where do you feel uncomfortable? Let me see which department to book."
After a moment of silence, Sophie said softly, "Obstetrics."
Matthew's hand froze on his phone. He looked at her stomach in surprise. "You..."
"I'm pregnant." Sophie had nothing to hide. As her lawyer, Matthew couldn't be kept in the dark.
Matthew silently registered her and started the car.
"You're pregnant, so why still get divorced?"
He couldn't help but ask.
In divorce cases, Matthew had seen too many women compromise for their children's sake. This was the first time he'd seen someone like Sophie.
Sophie's lips were very pale, making her small face look even colder. "It's precisely because I'm pregnant that I can't continue. Rather than let the child grow up in a home full of lies and deception, it's better for them to be born without a father from the start."
She'd rather work harder herself, just hoping the child would understand her intentions.
Matthew understood her meaning. She planned to have the baby but still wanted the divorce.
Being a single mother wouldn't be easy. No wonder she wanted to fight for that 15% stake in Davis Group.
But from Matthew's rational perspective, terminating the pregnancy would be the best decision!
However, seeing that Sophie had made up her mind, he didn't say more. He just understood more clearly that she had no way back.
He had to help her get that 15% stake in Davis Group.
At the hospital, Matthew took the initiative to get the number, letting Sophie rest on the side, not daring to let her walk around.
Sophie sat on a chair in the corridor, feeling waves of pain in her stomach. Her brows furrowed slightly, her forehead covered in fine sweat.
She let out a light breath and looked up to see if Matthew was coming back, but unexpectedly caught a glimpse of two familiar figures.
Sophie thought she must be seeing things and unconsciously followed them.
The obstetrics department was mostly filled with couples. Preston helped Elena into a VIP room, gently rubbing her hair, saying softly, "Sit down first, I'll go see why the doctor we arranged isn't here yet."
Elena nodded with a smile, her fingers clinging to the man's sleeve. "Come back quickly. I feel like the baby in my belly is being naughty, keeps moving around. I'm a bit scared."
"I'll be quick."
Preston kissed Elena's forehead reassuringly. As he turned to leave, Elena pulled him back.
He sighed without any sign of anger, his handsome face full of helpless amusement. "What is it now?"
"Preston, you'll come back after you go, right?" Elena pouted, looking somewhat worried.
They say pregnant women are emotional. Preston knew his tone yesterday had scared her. Feeling guilty, his voice was very gentle. "What nonsense are you talking about? You're carrying our baby. How could I not come back?"
Elena whined coquettishly, "But you said those things yesterday, I was scared."
Matthew sat back beside her, gently stroking the woman's belly, his eyes showing the tenderness of a father-to-be. "I only said that yesterday to fool Sophie. You know I can't get divorced right now."
"So me and the baby have to stay hidden forever?" Elena persisted.
She didn't want her child to be an illegitimate child, hidden forever.
When Preston brought this up, the gentle expression on his face faded, and his tone cooled. "Elena, I don't like you being like this. You should be obedient. I have my own plans."
Seeing his expression change, Elena immediately became docile.
"Sorry, I was wrong. I won't say it anymore."
Preston was satisfied and left the room.
Sophie stood at the door and heard their entire conversation clearly.
After Preston left, she emerged from the next room, tears falling uncontrollably from her eyes. She felt her heart being torn apart by pain.
How ridiculous - the man who kept telling her to trust him was actually accompanying his mistress to the hospital for a checkup.
From beginning to end, he never intended to make Elena terminate the pregnancy, did he?
He wanted Elena to have the baby!
"Sophie, how did you get here?"
Matthew's voice came from behind, not too loud or soft, but loud enough for the person in the room to hear.
Elena looked up and met Sophie's red-rimmed eyes. After a moment of surprise, her eyes filled with arrogant triumph.
She raised her eyebrows, speaking with certainty, "Are you following us?"
