Chapter 5 Who Is This Man?
Seeing that she'd been exposed, Sophie decided to stop hiding.
She stepped forward and looked at the woman on the hospital bed with cold eyes. "So you know what you're doing is wrong?"
She said she was following them, which showed that even she knew how shameless and wrong she was.
Elena's expression froze briefly. After a moment of awkwardness, thinking of the child in her belly, she gained some confidence.
"So what if it's wrong? At least I can have children, unlike you." Elena lifted her chin slightly, showing none of yesterday's submissive demeanor. Her tone was vicious. "No matter what happens now, as long as I give birth to this child, he'll be the Davis family's first grandson. Even Grandma Davis will accept him."
She had figured it out—status wasn't that important.
As long as she could successfully give birth to the Davis family's first grandson, she'd have good days ahead.
Could the Davis family really just watch their own bloodline stay outside the family?
"You're really shameless, being a mistress so brazenly!"
Matthew had seen countless shameless people, but none compared to this woman. Her arrogance was truly infuriating.
Hearing this angry rebuke, Elena finally noticed that Sophie hadn't come alone.
Seeing Matthew in his suit, her eyes flickered, and she suddenly smiled subtly. "Well, well, Sophie, you have the nerve to scold me when you're being unfaithful yourself, getting involved with another man. Does Preston know about this?"
Seeing her talk nonsense, Matthew frowned. "Stop making things up. Sophie and I have a clean relationship—we're just friends."
Elena sneered, covering her mouth with a cold laugh. "I don't care if you're pure or not. If you're smart enough to find another man, good for you."
She'd love nothing more than for Sophie to find someone else and divorce Preston.
As if adding fuel to the fire wasn't enough, Elena stood up, touched her belly, and said provocatively, "Sophie, you saw it yourself—Preston plans to let me have this child. He doesn't love you, or at least not that much."
Matthew, seeing her wild claims, looked worriedly at Sophie.
She was already unwell, and this woman was deliberately taunting her...
But he underestimated her.
Sophie admitted that hearing those words made her angry, but facing the mistress who destroyed her family, she had no reason to let her enjoy the show.
Raising an eyebrow, she looked mockingly at Elena's belly with a casual tone that was infuriating. "That's great. Someone's willing to have a child for my husband—what's there to complain about? How nice, I can have a child without suffering. I should thank you."
Elena thought she must be crazy and glared at her with a frown. "Are you sick? This child is mine!"
"Yours?" Sophie laughed coldly, her eyes full of mockery. "What's your relationship with Preston? Do you even have the right to bear his child?"
"You..." Sophie interrupted her, analyzing everything clearly for her.
"You think the Davis family would let their own child stay outside? As long as I'm generous enough to accept this child, believe it or not, the Davis family will have the child call me mom."
Elena's pupils contracted, her fingertips digging into her flesh.
Of course she believed it. Sophie was absolutely right. As long as Preston and Sophie didn't divorce, as long as Sophie was willing, the child would be hers.
She had thought no woman could endure such humiliation—raising her husband's child with another woman.
It seemed she had underestimated Sophie's tolerance.
She bit her lip, her words sounding weak and pale. "Dream on, the child is mine!"
Seeing her lose composure and no longer acting arrogant, Sophie raised an eyebrow. "I don't care what your relationship with Preston is, as long as the position of Mrs. Davis belongs to me."
Just as she finished her harsh words, a tall figure appeared behind Sophie.
Elena, who had been aggressive moments ago, instantly played the victim, her eyes reddening as she called out tremulously, "Preston..."
Sophie's body stiffened. She turned to see the man behind her, pressed her lips together, and said nothing.
At a time like this, whoever spoke first would be at a disadvantage.
After all, she was the victim who caught her husband cheating—naturally Preston should be the one explaining.
Matthew took in Elena's affected manner and frowned in disgust, immediately stepping in front of Sophie, worried Preston might be shameless enough to get physical.
Preston, already displeased by Sophie's words about not caring, now saw someone foolishly standing between him and Sophie. His eyes turned cold, a chilly aura surrounding him.
He looked past the man at Sophie and questioned in a deep voice, "What are you doing here? Are you following me?"
Sophie laughed coldly to herself.
Shouldn't he first explain about the child in Elena's belly?
"Preston, shouldn't you first explain what's going on with Elena? You lied to me!"
Elena immediately added fuel to the fire, looking pitiful. "Preston, she was following us. As soon as you left, she appeared. She said she didn't want me to keep this child. Preston..."
Preston frowned, glanced at Elena, his tone displeased. "Shut up first!"
Elena choked.
Preston turned to look at Sophie, pressing his lips together. "Is what she said true?"
Sophie, seeing his righteous manner, felt only mockery. "I never said I wouldn't let her keep the child."
Preston believed Sophie. He had heard some of her words earlier.
She was being so generous—by rights, he should be happy.
But somehow, he felt no happiness at all, only anger.
She didn't care about him at all!
Watching the anger burning in Preston's eyes, Sophie found it strange. "You lied to me, Preston. Don't you owe me an explanation?"
Preston's eyes darkened. "There's a misunderstanding. I'll explain everything to you later."
"What if I want to hear your explanation now?" Sophie pretended to be hurt, looking at him with reddened eyes.
Seeing that her attitude showed she did care, Preston's expression softened slightly. He stepped forward, trying to reach for her. "I told you, Elena has some mental issues. Don't believe what she says. I was just worried she'd have an accident alone."
The excuse was too poor—Sophie didn't want to believe a word of it.
She stepped back, avoiding the man's reaching hand.
This evasive action greatly displeased Preston.
"Sophie..."
Matthew, seeing him reach out again, blocked his way. "Can't you see she doesn't want to?"
Preston had been tolerating him for a long time. This inexplicable knight in shining armor blocking his way made him impatient. "What's it to you?"
Matthew stood his ground, his tone cold. "Sophie's business is my business!"
This guy was shameless—he absolutely couldn't let him near Sophie.
Meddling fool!
The man before him was truly an eyesore. Preston looked at Sophie with a dark expression, his low voice clearly displeased. "Sophie, who is he?"
