Chapter 7 About to Be Exposed?
Had Sophie ever fantasized about what it would be like if the two of them had children?
Back then, she once thought they would be very happy together. After all, he loved her so, so much.
But now that a child was actually on the way, all she wanted was to divorce him.
The timing of this child couldn't be worse. Though she didn't want to abort it, she absolutely wouldn't let the child stay with Preston either.
That's why she hid the fact that she was pregnant - she didn't want Preston to use it as leverage.
"We're both still young. Let's think about having kids a bit more." Sophie broke free from Preston's embrace, stood up and walked toward the bed, pretending to yawn tiredly. "I'm exhausted, I want to rest."
But Preston wouldn't let it go and followed her, pulling her down onto the bed with him. "But I want a child that belongs to both of us."
As he spoke, he lowered his head to kiss her lips.
Watching those lips getting closer and closer, Sophie only felt disgusted. Her stomach churned uncontrollably, and she couldn't help but start retching.
She pushed Preston away forcefully and rushed quickly toward the bathroom.
She threw up violently over the toilet until her stomach was completely empty, finally feeling somewhat better.
Preston stood in the bathroom doorway, watching Sophie vomit like that, his expression very unpleasant.
Was she disgusted by him?
Though anger was rising inside him, he still turned to pour Sophie a glass of warm water to rinse her mouth.
Sophie finally suppressed that nauseating feeling. Looking up and seeing Preston's dark expression, she quickly explained to avoid suspicion, "My stomach hasn't been feeling well these past few days."
Preston helped her out of the bathroom without comment, his tone casual as he asked, "So you went to the hospital today to get checked out?"
Sophie nodded, her excuse airtight. "Yes, that's why I said running into you guys at the hospital was an accident."
"What did the doctor say?"
Sophie looked directly into his eyes, without a trace of guilt. "The doctor said it's because of too much stress, told me to rest well for a few days."
Preston observed her emotions and didn't notice anything unusual. His expression softened, and he gently patted Sophie's shoulder. "I'll have my assistant arrange it. I'll take you for another checkup tomorrow, a full body exam. That way I can feel at ease."
A full body exam? Wouldn't that expose everything?
Suppressing the worry in her heart, she grabbed Preston's hand. "I already got checked out, and the doctor prescribed medicine too. I'm fine, no need to go through all that trouble."
Preston looked at her disapprovingly. "How is it trouble? I'm worried. It's better to do a thorough examination."
"Really, it's not necessary." Sophie smiled sweetly. "I know my own body. Besides, isn't your company really busy? You don't need to worry about such small matters. I'll take good care of myself."
After Sophie's repeated refusals, Preston finally agreed.
He thoughtfully tucked the blanket around Sophie. "Then rest well these days. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, tell me right away and I'll take you to the hospital."
"Okay." Sophie lowered her eyes, without a trace of gratitude in them.
All her feelings had completely vanished the moment she saw Preston cheating.
Once she'd experienced betrayal, she could never again trust Preston unconditionally.
After getting into bed, Preston held her from behind, confining her small body in his arms, and said softly, "Sleep now."
Sophie closed her eyes, and soon her breathing became steady.
Looking down at the woman in his arms, Preston's dark eyes were filled with complex emotions.
He didn't know if he was overthinking it, but he always felt that Sophie's attitude toward him seemed much colder.
When did it start?
It seemed to be after Elena came to their door and made that scene.
Thinking of Sophie's resistant look when he tried to be intimate earlier, Preston felt inexplicably stifled.
It's okay, as long as Sophie wasn't thinking about divorce, she would forever be his wife.
Her birthday was coming up in a few days. He would throw her a grand birthday party and give her a nice gift. She would come around.
When Sophie woke up the next day, Preston was already gone. The room was empty.
She sighed and turned to look at the ceiling.
She thought she wouldn't be able to sleep after yesterday's situation, but maybe because she was too tired, she had actually fallen asleep.
But she didn't want to continue living like this anymore. She just hoped they could get divorced quickly.
Just as she was thinking this, her phone rang. The caller ID showed Matthew.
She immediately answered the call. Matthew's slightly worried voice came through. "Are you okay? Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?"
Because Preston showed up yesterday and disrupted the original plan, Sophie hadn't had time to get checked out. She didn't know how her body was doing.
Hearing the concern he couldn't hide in his voice, Sophie's lips curved slightly. She sat up and leaned against the headboard. "I'm fine. My stomach felt much better after I got home yesterday. I think it's probably because I've been worrying too much lately. I'll be more careful from now on."
Hearing her say she was fine, Matthew felt somewhat relieved. "Preston didn't give you a hard time yesterday, did he?"
After getting home yesterday, he had reflected on his actions and felt a bit regretful, worried he'd caused trouble for Sophie.
"No."
Maybe he felt guilty himself, because he didn't ask too many other questions yesterday.
He left early this morning, which at least saved them from an awkward time alone together.
Hearing that everything was fine, Matthew was completely at ease. "I'll help you get the divorce as soon as possible. Don't worry."
With those words from him, Sophie naturally felt reassured.
Meanwhile, Preston had gone to the hospital early that morning.
The doctor was examining Elena when she saw him enter. Her eyes immediately turned red.
"I thought you weren't going to care about me anymore."
Preston walked over slowly and touched her cheek. "Stop crying all the time. Be careful not to hurt the baby in your belly."
Elena broke into a smile through her tears, looking coquettishly at the doctor beside them. "The doctor just said the baby in my belly is very healthy, right?"
"Yes, the baby in the mother's womb is very healthy, but you still need to be careful. After all, it's early pregnancy..."
The doctor gave a few reminders about things to watch out for during pregnancy, then left.
Elena quickly pulled Preston to sit down, asking with slight concern, "Was everything okay when you got home yesterday? Sophie didn't suspect anything, did she?"
Preston gently stroked her belly and said softly, "Don't ask about things you shouldn't. The most important thing for you now is to protect the baby. Don't ask about anything else."
Elena's expression stiffened, but then she obediently nodded and rested her head on Preston's chest. "I understand. I won't ask anything. I'm very obedient."
Preston liked her obedience. He patted her gently, then pulled out a black card from his pocket. "Take this card and buy whatever you want."
Elena wasn't coy about it. Without his company, money was just as good.
She reached out to take it, smiling lightly. "I'll accept it on behalf of the baby in my belly."
