Chapter 144

Erin’s POV

“Gavin is awake,” Beta Seth said into the phone.

Relief flooded through me.

Thank goddess; that meant he was going to be okay, and I could finally breathe. It’s been killing me not being able to go to the hospital. But with Jessie still, out there, we were all still in so much danger.

Theo doesn’t think Jessie is going to strike back this soon, especially when her reputation has been tanked as soon as her identity was revealed to the public.

But that didn’t make me any less worried that she would soon return.

“The first person he asked about was you,” Seth continued, pulling at my heartstrings painfully.

I hated that I couldn’t be with Gavin, but finding Jessie right now was way too important.

“He also doesn’t think bringing his family home is a good idea,” Seth said with uncertainty in his voice. “I thought it was mentioned that there’s no trace of Jessie or anyone left in her organization.”

“Gavin is right; until we know for sure that Jessie is gone, it’s for the best that his family stays in the safe houses.”

“He could really use his family right now,” Seth said with sadness lingering in his tone. “Or at least someone he loves.”

That was a jab at me for not being there. I wasn’t sure what more to say so I said my goodbyes to him and hung up the phone.

Theo stood nearby, folding his arms across his chest.

“You should go be with him,” Theo said. “He’s going to be returning home soon and if Jessie is obsessed with him as you say she is, then she might end up there.”

Oh, my goddess.

Theo was right.

I couldn’t leave Gavin alone knowing that Jessie could show up at any moment. He’s been through so much and I didn’t want him to go through any more of it.

I went to Gavin’s packhouse later that evening. I wasn’t expecting him to return until at least the morning and I thought I could surprise him by being here when he got here. But it didn’t work out that way.

Gavin stood at the doorway, staring down at me with raised brows.

He was looking well; not at all like he’s been stabbed by a silver arrow.

My breathing nearly got caught in my throat as I stared up at this incredibly handsome.

“I didn’t think I would be seeing you. I tried calling and you didn’t answer,” he said, sounding almost disinterested.

My heart squeezed painfully in my chest; he looked at me with such cruelty.

He was so upset with me.

For lying to him.

And for abandoning him.

“We should tell him about our pregnancy” Emily urged; his scent was drawing her in and her mouth was practically watering.

“Now is hardly the time,” I muttered to my wolf in return.

“I had to deal with something,” I said, looking up at Gavin. “I needed to find her.”

“And did you?”

“No…” I admitted. “Which is why I’m here. She might try to show up here…”

“If she does, I can fight my own battle. I don’t need you to baby me,” he said, turning away for me.

I followed him into the packhouse, closing the door behind me.

“That’s not why I’m here,” I told him. “I know you can handle your own. But I wanted to be here with you anyways…”

I lowered my gaze, feeling myself getting emotional.

I blamed this pregnancy.

“I was really scared when I thought I lost you,” I whispered, biting my bottom lip to keep from sobbing, but I couldn’t stop the heavy flow of tears that washed over my features.

Gavin stepped closer to me, closing the small gap that sat between us. Soon, I felt his warm arms enclosing me, holding me close to his broad chest.

My body instantly relaxed against his and I could hear Emily’s pure excitement and bliss being this close to our mate.

“I meant every word I said, you know,” he whispered against me. “I love you and nothing can ever change that.”

“You don’t know how many times I wanted to tell you the truth about who I am,” I said, peering up at him. “It was so incredibly difficult to hide this part of me from you. The Moonshadow has become a huge part of my life and I don’t intend to give that up.”

“I would never make you give up something you love.”

“I don’t want my existence to put you in danger…”

“Erin, I’m not weak… I can take care of myself and I’m not afraid of a challenge. I never have been. Especially when it comes to you,” he said, a twinkle of hope shining in his eyes.

I couldn’t help but smile at his kind words.

“I love you,” I found myself saying as we kissed.

A few days had passed and there’s still no sign of Jessie anywhere nearby. Or any signs of any of her people who aren’t currently being held in our jails.

Theo had mentioned she was spotted across the world, but that was never actually confirmed. However, I’m beginning to think Theo might be right about Jessie taking her time when it comes to planning. He doesn’t think she’s going to be a threat for a long time and when she does return for her vengeance, the Moonshadow organization will be ready.

We have gotten rid of the mole that’s been feeding the other organizations our secrets. He was the reason they kept coming for us and pinpointing our exact weaknesses to give them a fair shot at winning a battle.

With Henry behind bars and Jessie completely gone, things have quieted down drastically these last few days.

During the evening, I had on a nice sun gown that covered my body loosely and I left my hair down because I knew that’s how Gavin liked it the most.

I heard a knock at the door, bringing me out of my moment.

Anna poked her head in and her eyes lit up.

“You are stunning, Miss Erin,” she breathed. “Is there a special occasion?”

“No,” I said with a fond smile. “I just have a surprise for Gavin. I’m a little nervous…” I admitted.

“I’m sure he’s going to love whatever it is,” Anna said with a fond smile. “I just came in to see if you needed anything before I went to bed.”

“No, you are all set to sleep, Anna,” I said in return. “But when you pass Alpha Gavin’s office, can you tell him to meet me in our bedroom in 5 minutes?”

“Yes, of course,” she said. “Enjoy your night.”

She was gone moments later.

I took a deep breath as I continued to stare at myself in the mirror. I couldn’t mess this up; I didn’t want Gavin to think I was keeping this from him on purpose.

I only found out a few days ago.

I put my hands on my stomach and took another deep breath to calm my nerves.

Soon, Gavin was entering the room with a curious look in his eyes.

“Anna says you have a surprise for me,” Gavin said, a little humor lacing his tone. “Should I close my eyes?”

I laughed at his boy-like face as I motioned for him to sit with me on the bed.

He did so right away, but the curiosity was gone and now he just looked worried.

“Is it not a good surprise?” He asked with a timid frown. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m okay,” I assured him. “But I’m not sure how to tell you this without you thinking I was keeping it from you. Because I wasn’t… only found out a few days ago and with everything going on, it didn’t seem like the right timing and—”

“Erin—”

“—I’m pregnant.”
