By the time I returned home, the adrenaline had long faded.

Past midnight, the entire estate was unnaturally quiet. I walked down the corridor, already knowing what I would find.

Grandfather was waiting.

He sat in his usual armchair, a half-closed book resting on his knee, reading glasse...
