Chapter Three

Jocelyn's POV

"Miss Lillian!"

Dean spoke up urgently, interrupting what Lillian was about to say next.

But the hospital room had been too quiet just now, so even though Lillian's voice was small, I heard it crystal clear.

My hands hanging at my sides clenched into fists, and with reddened eyes, I approached Lillian step by step.

"What did you just say? Because of what?"

My voice was wrapped in coldness, and the air pressure around me dropped accordingly, scaring Lillian so much that tears instantly welled up in her eyes.

Lillian bit her lip: "I'm... I'm sorry, I was talking nonsense just now, I don't know anything..."

After speaking, she threw herself into Ashton's arms without hesitation, trembling violently all over, like a frightened little rabbit.

The fragrance of Lillian's hair drifted into Ashton's nose, making his body suddenly stiffen.

Almost instinctively, he raised his hand and circled Lillian protectively in his arms.

Ashton looked at me, his eyes visibly rippling with a layer of defensiveness.

"Jocelyn, she's still pregnant with a child, don't get agitated! Let's talk this through properly!"

I ignored him, with only one thought in my mind to figure out the truth, so I went forward to grab Lillian's arm.

But before my hand could touch Lillian, I was suddenly pushed away by Ashton.

The strong force made me stagger back several steps, and I only managed to stand steady after Dean supported me.

Everyone was accustomed to Ashton's reaction, but Ashton himself stared with wide eyes in shock.

Ashton immediately released Lillian from his arms, looking somewhat at a loss.

"Darling, I'm sorry! I... I didn't mean to!"

As soon as Ashton said this, the entire hospital room fell silent.

I stared with reddened eyes, finding it extremely ironic.

However, unlike before, after losing his memory, Ashton would give a sweet treat after delivering a slap.

If it were in the past, perhaps my heart would have wavered.

In the end, it was Dean who cleared his throat, breaking the strange atmosphere around us.

"Madam, please calm down first. Whatever you want to know, you can ask me."

I turned around with red-rimmed eyes, clutching Dean's clothes like grasping at a lifeline.

"Dean, I've always considered you a friend. Tell me, what really happened to my parents back then?"

I stared intently at Dean, desperately wanting to know if there were other hidden circumstances surrounding that incident.

Dean looked at me, as if I would shatter at the slightest touch, and a trace of heartache floated in his eyes.

His mouth opened slightly, then closed tightly. After a moment's hesitation, he lowered his gaze and spoke.

"Madam, what happened back then was an accident, there were no other reasons. Even if you don't believe me, you should believe the surveillance footage, right?"

"The police showed you the surveillance. Their car didn't have any collision, it indeed lost control and went off the cliff."

As Dean's last word fell, I felt a buzzing sound in my head, my hands sliding down powerlessly, and I took a deep breath.

Indeed.

From the surveillance footage back then, my parents' car had suddenly lost control and rushed toward the guardrail on its own.

So in the end, the police determined that they had gotten into an argument in the car, which led to the accident.

But all these years I had refused to believe that my loving parents would argue while driving, leading to the car accident and plunge off the cliff.

And there was also what Lillian had just said...

Seeing me gradually calm down, Ashton also quickly spoke up, his face full of sincerity.

"Darling, I'm sorry. I lost my memory and really didn't know they had already... But don't be afraid, you still have me! From now on, I'll stay by your side and protect you!"

The exact same words, I had heard once two years ago.

At that time, I was moved to tears.

I thought I had grasped the only beam of light in the darkness.

But now, even with his memory loss, Ashton showed extraordinary favoritism toward Lillian.

I found this farce disgusting to watch even one more second!

"Ashton, I don't need your protection anymore. Right now I just want to divorce you."

I bit down hard on each word, the coldness in my eyes rushing straight into Ashton's gaze.

Ashton shook his head frantically and shouted: "No! I won't divorce!"

His tone was firm, with an attitude of refusing to give up until hitting a dead end.

After speaking, he reached out and grabbed the divorce agreement on the table, tearing it into pieces with reddened eyes.

I watched the scene before me, finding it utterly ridiculous.

Not long ago, he had schemed and plotted to make me compromise and sign the divorce agreement, but now it had turned into white paper pieces flying all over, scattering on the ground.

I coldly withdrew my gaze, letting it fall on Lillian's slightly protruding belly.

"Then what about the child in her belly, your child?"

Ashton froze for a moment, his expression wavering, murmuring to himself.

"Even if the child is really mine, it must have been an accident! I only have you in my heart, I must have mistaken her for you! Believe me!"

"Darling, stop throwing a tantrum. You're an orphan now. If you leave me, who else can you rely on? You only have me now!"

Hearing Ashton's tone become increasingly self-righteous, I finally couldn't bear it anymore and raised my arm, slapping him across the face.

A crisp "smack" echoed throughout the hospital room.

For two years of marriage, he had always been this self-righteous.

Thinking I couldn't leave him, so he trampled on my sincere feelings even more unscrupulously.

But now, I didn't want to deceive myself anymore!

My relationship with Ashton was like spoiled milk—forcing it down would only make me nauseous.

"Oh my God!"

With an exclamation, Lillian rushed over, raising her hand to gently touch the handprint on Ashton's face, her eyes full of heartache.

Then she turned to glare at me: "Jocelyn, how could you hit someone?!"

Lillian's voice was soft and sweet.

It formed a stark contrast with my cold indifference.

Ashton also looked at me with disbelief, as if he couldn't understand why I had become so unreasonable now, completely different from his memories.

As if thinking of something, his pupils suddenly contracted.

The eyes that had been full of anger gradually lost their confidence.

"Jocelyn, let's calm down first. About the divorce, can we talk about it later?"

Lillian beside him, hearing this, also spoke very considerately.

"Yes, Ashton is so badly injured right now, recovering is what's important."

"Even if you decide not to divorce, I support it. When the time comes, I'll just take the child and leave, never appearing in front of you again!"

As Lillian spoke, she stroked her belly, tears falling at will.

Ashton was stunned, a trace of panic flashing in his eyes.

I watched his reaction, no longer feeling any ripples in my heart. After leaving one sentence, I turned and left.

"I'll have the lawyer draft a new divorce agreement. I hope you can sign it readily in three days, otherwise I'll have the lawyer talk to you."

Three days was enough time for Ashton to find out clearly what had happened during the two years of memories he had lost.

I also believed that with Lillian's methods, she would definitely make Ashton agree to the divorce.

Walking out of the hospital, I exhaled heavily.

My eyes ached terribly, as if something was about to fall out from inside.

I quickly looked up and blinked hard, finally managing to suppress it.

Then I took out my phone and dialed a number.

"Vinson, are you free right now? There's something I want to ask you."
