Chapter 3 The rule that was never written

CHAPTER 3: THE RULE THAT WAS NEVER WRITTEN

Ren didn't stop running

Even after the Hunter dissolved.

Even after the System confirmed it was gone.

His body didn’t believe the danger was over.

That was the first thing he learned about this place,

survival wasn’t logical. It was instinct.

He moved through broken streets and collapsed intersections, keeping to the edges where visibility was low. Every shadow looked wrong now. Every silence felt like it had weight.

The cracks from his new ability still lingered in his vision.

Thin fractures in walls.

Broken lines in the air.

Distorted spaces where reality didn’t fully connect.

He didn’t understand it.

But he trusted it more than his eyes.

Eventually, his legs slowed, his body became tired .

He stopped behind a half-collapsed bus turned sideways across the road. He pressed a hand against it, breathing hard.

“…Okay,” he muttered to himself. “Think.”

For the first time, the situation wasn’t pure panic.

It was information.

He was inside a System.

People were being placed into “Trials.”

Creatures were hunting them.

And killing one gave him something called an ability.

That part still didn’t make sense.

But it was real.

A faint message flickered in his vision again.

[PLAYER STATUS UPDATED]

[FRACTURE SIGHT (LV.1) ACTIVE]

Ren exhaled slowly.

“So I’m not hallucinating.”

A bitter thought followed immediately after.

“…That would actually be worse.”

He stepped out from behind the bus.

The city around him was still wrong in every direction. Streets that curved unnaturally. Buildings that didn’t match architectural logic. Some structures looked duplicated, like copies placed slightly off.

And somewhere in the distance, faint screams still echoed.

Like the city was slowly eating people one by one.

Ren began walking again.

Carefully this time.

Then he noticed something new.

A glowing marker.

Floating ahead, suspended in mid-air like a navigation point.

[SAFE ZONE: 1.2 KM]

He stopped.

“…Safe zone?”

His eyes narrowed.

Why would a death game offer safety?

That alone felt suspicious.

But the alternative was staying outside with things like the Hunter roaming.

He didn’t hesitate long.

He moved toward it.

The closer he got, the more wrong the environment became.

The cracks in reality intensified.

With Fracture Sight, he saw more than before.

Some walls weren’t walls, they were stitched illusions.

Some streets repeated themselves in loops.

And in one place, he saw something that made him stop walking entirely.

A figure standing still inside a building, the figure wasn't moving or blinking, it just stood.

Except,

It wasn’t alive.

Its body had no fracture lines.

No System presence.

No status.

It didn’t belong to anything in this world.

Ren slowly stepped back.

“…That’s not a player.”

A chill ran down his spine.

Because if it wasn’t a player… and it wasn’t a monster…

Then what was it?

The figure inside the building turned its head slightly.

Directly toward him.

Ren didn’t wait.

He turned and walked faster.

By the time he reached the Safe Zone marker, the area changed again.

A strange circular boundary shimmered in the air.

Inside it,

Stillness.

No distortions.

No fractures.

Even the air felt normal.

Ren stepped through.

Instantly, the noise of the world dropped.

It wasn’t silent like before.

Inside the zone stood scattered survivors.

Maybe twenty people now.

Less than before.

Some were injured. Some sat on the ground shaking. Others stared blankly like they had already accepted death was just delayed.

A man near the center spoke loudly.

“Everyone listen! This is simple, stay inside the zone and we survive until morning!”

A few people nodded quickly.

Hope was fragile here.

Ren didn’t join them.

He stayed near the edge, still observing.

And that’s when he noticed something else.

A floating System panel above the safe zone itself.

But this one was different.

It wasn’t part of the Trial message system.

It was older.

Faded.

Almost… corrupted.

[ZONE STATUS: TEMPORARY CONSTRUCT]

[MAINTENANCE BY UNKNOWN AUTHORITY]

Ren frowned.

“Unknown authority?”

That was the second time he’d seen that phrase.

Something about it felt wrong.

Like even the System didn’t fully understand what was happening.

A girl nearby suddenly spoke, voice shaking.

“Hey… did anyone else see the message earlier?”

People turned toward her.

“What message?”

She swallowed.

“It said… ‘Players are recyclable assets.’”

Silence hit the group instantly.

The confident man from earlier forced a laugh.

“That’s fake. It’s just psychological manipulation.”

But his voice was less certain now.

Ren slowly turned his head.

Recyclable assets.

That didn’t sound like survival.

It sounded like usage.

Like something was being harvested.

Then,

A new message appeared.

This time it was Inside their minds.

[WARNING]

[SAFE ZONE STABILITY DECREASING]

The boundary of the zone flickered.

Once.

Twice.

A crack formed along its edge.

Then another.

Someone shouted, “Hey, what’s happening?!”

The confident man stepped back. “No, no, this isn’t supposed to, ”

The Safe Zone shattered slightly.

Like glass.

And through the opening,

Something stared in.

Not fully entering.

Ren’s Fracture Sight flared violently.

Every crack in reality pointed toward the same direction.

Outside the zone.

Something had arrived, something that did not belong to either side of the system.

Ren took a slow step backward.

“…This is not a safe zone.”

The System responded instantly.

[CLARIFICATION]

[SAFETY IS TEMPORARY]

The last word lingered.

Temporary.

The boundary cracked further.

And the thing outside moved closer.
