RP Chapter 5
“Kyle.” She mumbled against the metal desk.
Kyle let out a gruff sigh as he watched the over worked, indeed fragile woman, no matter how tough she acted, sleep in the uncomfortable position. “Oh, Kace, what am I going to do with you?” he whispered slightly.
“Kyle, please.” She whimpered her hand that was sprawled out on the desk clenched into a tight fist.
“If only, babe.” He moved closer to her, laying a hand on her shoulder gently. “Kace?” he called softly.
“Ky!” she yelled out as she jerked awake and flew to a sitting position.
He tried so hard not to laugh at her skewed glasses and the paper sticking to her face. He reached up to straight the frames and pulled the paper from her face. “Kacey, why do you do this?”
“Do what?” she rasped out from the sleep she had abruptly woken up from.
“Always fall asleep here, never leave here, you’re twenty-seven, babe, you have a life still ahead of you.”
“Because I also have a job that involves catching some really terrible men, do you think they are giving up and have a personal life?” she huffed, running her hands through her tangled hair.
He reached for her hand, but she pulled away. “Don’t, Davenport.”
“That’s not what you were moaning out a few minutes ago.” He teased her but regretted it when her tan face paled.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Kace, you want me, and I want you, why do we have to keep fighting it?”
“Why can’t you keep your mind on finding Donovan?”
“Because my mind isn’t one tracked, there are a million tracks and I can think of everything all at once, why don’t you let me take you home? Twenty hours a day in this place isn’t healthy.” He caught her hand this time and moved closer to her.
She laid a hand on his chest. “I’m fine, Kyle, really, I need to work on these, so I don’t let Alpha and Director Cunningham down, or your brothers and mine.”
He sighed lacing his fingers into her soft cinnamon colored and smelling hair tilting her head back. “Sweetheart, you never let me down, that has to count some, doesn’t it?” He searched those clear teal eyes of hers.
“Kyle, last night can’t and won’t change anything, it was amazing, but you’ll grow bored, and I’ll be too busy finishing up the last few Kaces then I’ll be working on Donovan.”
“But Shawn and Davis don’t want you to.”
“And you do.”
“Not anymore after what I walked in on last night, I don’t want you any closer to Herz than you have to be, I’ll be handing him the real jump drive later, right now though, I want to take you home, let your over worked mind relax and get some much needed sleep so you’ll be at the top of your game.”
~
She gazed back up at him, for a fleeting moment she glanced at his lips but then frowned. “Wait, you said real jump drive, you gave him a fake?” she demanded.
“Yeah, I did, I wanted you and only you to work on it, but with you falling asleep at your desk I’ve changed my mind.”
“I’m not going to break, you know? I graduated at the top of my class, both in high school and college I’ve solved over one hundred Kaces with my decoding and analyzing so much data, I can handle it, Kyle.” She jutted her little chin out in stubbornness.
He trailed his fingertips softly down her cheek and along her jaw. “Don’t you think I know that Kace, you saved me once, I know what you’re capable of, but right now, babe, I need to take you home.”
“When can I look at the drive?”
“After some sleep, c’mon.” He pulled her down from the stool, closed the folder then put it away then headed to the elevator and they headed to the first floor.
He pulled her close to him and rubbed her arm gently, making the sweatshirt sleeves move up and down. He couldn’t believe how much she thought he didn’t know. He knew he was alive because of her, while she was still in college and Shawn and he were deployed, her nerdy, cute ass managed to hack into the terrorist’s computers from the very place he was taking her from and found his location.
~
Yeah, he was here holding her because of her, and he knew she could do something for Donovan if given the chance. That’s when he had started feeling the change for his best friend’s nerdy sister.
She was strong and capable, but even the strongest of men needed rest. He was going to make sure she was going to get it. He pressed his lips to her forehead softly just as the doors slid open.
They came face to face with Director Cunningham. He arched an eyebrow at them. “Where are you two headed?”
“I found miss capable here asleep at the lab table, so I’m taking her home to get some actual sleep.”
“Kacey, you didn’t go home last night?”
“No, sir.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know, got caught up with some things.”
Cunningham let out a deep huff. “Davenport, get her home, get her to bed and make sure she stays there, I didn’t bring her on here to waste her life and energy, you’re going to get sick doing all this Matthews, now go, that’s an order for both of you.”
Kacey practically ran for the exit with Kyle following. He finally pulled her to a stop. “Easy, Kace, come on, let’s get you home.”
He headed over to his bike and jumped on. He smiled to himself when she got on behind him. She was something else, it wasn’t the first time she’d gotten on his bike, but it still always amazed him.
He felt her wrap her arms around him, planting those small, wonderful hands on his abs and he took off as she buried her nose against his back. He hated how much she was comfortable with him when last night she was burning mad at him and still hadn’t shared why. But that conversation would have to wait for after she got some sleep.
He pulled up into her driveway and she unplastered herself from him then made her way to the white door that matched the white shutters on the house. She turned before opening the door. “What’re you doing?”
Kyle frowned at her. “Doing what the director ordered, making sure you stay in bed.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea, Kyle, I mean should you really be here?”
“Yes, I should.”
