RP Chapter 6
He plucked the keys from her hand and opened the door. He ushered her inside and locked the door behind them then took her to the soft blue painted bedroom.
He chuckled a little as she tumbled into the bed and her eyes seemed to close instantly. He slowly pulled her glasses off, setting them on her bed stand. “Honey, where’s your phone?”
She grumbled as she pulled it from her pocket and threw it to the other side of the bed.
“Wrong side, sweetheart.” He leaned over her and plucked it up and plugged it in. He yanked out the floppy disc along with his phone and laid the phone beside hers, while he stuffed the disc into her drawer. He crawled over her slowly, laying down beside her, he laid an arm over her waist gently.
He began to think a little as she moved into him closer. He wished he would have noticed sooner, the dark circles that were smudged beneath her eyes, he kissed her forehead. “Get some sleep, sweetheart, I’ll be here when you wake up this time.” He assured her in a hushed voice.
He smiled as he watched her roll toward him and snuggled against his chest. He’d show both Kacey and Shawn he wanted her long term and that he could be good for her.
Kyle buried his nose in her cinnamon smelling hair as her arm reached over him and clung to him. He rubbed her back slowly as sleep overtook him. Holding the one woman he had been wanting to hold for a very long time now.
“Davis, have you seen Kacey?” Shawn demanded as he strolled into his gray painted office with the gray furniture.
“No, I haven’t, she always makes a beeline for the lower lab though, I usually don’t see her, unless I go down there.” Davis leaned back in his high leather desk chair, his cobalt blue eyes darting to Shawn’s brown ones.
“She’s not down there, she’s usually here by now.”
Davis was up in a flash, grabbing his gun and shoulder holster. He marched over to his door with Shawn behind him.
“I told you this was a bad idea putting her at risk.” Shawn and he were forced to stop as Cunningham stepped in front of them.
“Put who at risk?” the director demanded.
“Kacey, she’s not here yet, this wasn’t supposed to happen.” Shawn gritted out. “This is why we pulled her off of Donovan’s Kace.”
Director Cunningham shook his head. “Office, now.” He ordered.
Shawn and Davis glanced at each other but did as their boss ordered. They climbed up the little flight of stairs behind the director as he led them to the door of his secretary’s office then just beyond his office.
“Sit.” Cunningham pointed to the chairs opposite his. He put the black granite topped desk between them and sat. “What’s this about putting Kacey at risk?” he narrowed his dark brown eyes at them.
Shawn let out a huff. “We pulled her off of Donovan’s Kace so no one would hurt her, but we also pressed Agent Herz into helping her because we don’t trust him, we wanted to see what he did with the information he gets from the disc Kyle is supposed to give him.”
“Is that fair to your sister, Agent Tammeron?” Director Cunningham demanded, his sharp brown glaze slid across Shawn.
“No, but we knew the minute she thought he was acting funny she would come and tell us.”
“Just like she told you about the two incidents last night?”
The two men frowned as they glanced at each other.
Cunningham pressed a few keys on his computer then turned the flat screen toward them. “You two aren’t the only ones suspicious about Herz.” He commented as he played the first video of Kacey and Herz out in the parking lot.
Shawn about jumped out of his chair when he saw Herz shove Kacey up against her truck hard. Then the video turned to one in the lab, where Herz actually touched her. Shawn clenched his jaw as he met the eyes of his boss, for a man in his early fifties, he was quick. The only thing that suggested the man was old were the gray hair and eyebrows, he barely had any wrinkles.
Cunningham pressed a few more keys and stopped the videos. Kyle has her by the way, he found her early this morning asleep on the stool at her desk, I made him take her home to make sure she got some much-needed sleep, you know why she over works herself? To prove herself to the both of you, she’s not a little girl anymore, she’s a very intelligent woman now, yet you two seem to baby her all the time.”
He leaned back in the dark chair. “She’s capable of a lot, out of everyone here at Alpha, I would think you two would know that your best friend,” he pointed to Shawn. “And your little brother is here because of her.” He pointed to Davis. “Now, why wouldn’t you want her on the Kace to help find your other little brother and friend?”
“We knew Kyle wasn’t a traitor, all the evidence is pointing to Donovan, as much as it pains me to say that sir, and you know what kind of retaliation is possible if anyone finds out she broke the Kace.”
“But you two and Kyle take that risk every time we close up on a Kace, why can’t she?”
“Because she’s too innocent.”
“Just like Donovan is supposed to be.” Cunningham cleared his throat. “Siblings grow up, agents, I suggest you two let them, let her work the Kace, you know she’d get somewhere before Herz ever did, and if you don’t trust him, he could lead everyone into a trap.”
“We would have been ready for it.” Shawn chimed in.
“Let Kacey work on it, that’s final.” He dismissed the two and they hurried out the door.
But Kacey was his little sister, the little sister he always protected, the sister he promised their dad and her mom he’d always look out for. He had to let her grow up, it was just hard.
“Kyle!” Kacey screamed as she shot up to a sitting position.
Kyle shot up next to Kacey, his gaze locked with her frantic one. “Hey, easy, Kace, I’m right here,” He cupped her cheeks gently. “See, I’m right here.”
She fell into him as she let out a shaky breath. “Kyle,” she whispered.
“What’s going on, sugar?”
“I couldn’t find you.” She moved closer to him.
“I’ve been here the whole time.” He stroked her hair gently.
She shook her head. “Not five years ago.”
He frowned a little, tilted her head up by her chin. “When was I taken?”
She nodded.
