Chapter 5
Through the half-closed door, I heard Henry’s voice clearly, no anger, no hesitation, and not even a ripple of extra emotion.
“This pup came at the wrong time.”
“Terminate it.”
The air seemed to freeze in that instant.
Isabella’s face went pale immediately. She grabbed Henry’s hand in panic, her fingers trembling, though her voice softened on purpose.
“Theo and Leo have always wanted a little brother or sister…”
“And during the car accident, I almost miscarried—but this baby still held on.”
“Henry, he must really like you as his father…”
She begged the man in front of her.
Sensing Henry’s hesitation, she hurried to add, “I’ll never say a word to Jenifer.”
“Not a single word.”
“Henry, please.”
In the dead silence, Henry finally nodded.
“…Alright.”
The glass door reflected their overlapping silhouettes, one tall, one smaller, standing impossibly close.
My clasped hands were a blur. My nails dug so hard into my palms they almost broke skin.
A wave of nausea surged up without warning.
I remembered two months ago when I had a raging fever and my wolf side spiraled out of control, Henry had been in this very hospital, tangled up with Isabella.
My stomach flipped violently.
I staggered away, rushed into the bathroom, and vomited until my vision went dark.
By the time I dragged myself back to the room, barely conscious, Henry was pacing anxiously inside.
The moment he saw me, he rushed over and pulled me hard into his arms.
“Jenifer, where did you go?”
“I was just paying the fees, and you were gone.”
His voice was filled with lingering fear—almost panic.
“I thought… you didn’t want me anymore.”
If I hadn’t heard everything with my own ears, I might have believed him again.
Looking at the genuine worry and concern in his eyes, all I felt was a numb, stabbing ache.
I slipped out of his arms without a sound, my tone flat, unfamiliar even to myself.
“I’m tired. I want to rest.”
Henry assumed I was upset about the accident and spoke even more carefully.
“Jenifer, I’m sorry.”
“The situation was too urgent. If anything had happened to Isabella, the two pups would’ve lost their mother.”
“They’re innocent.”
“You understand, right?”
When I nodded, the guilt in Henry’s eyes seemed to deepen.
“Get some rest. I’ll stay here with you.”
I didn’t respond.
When I woke again, the room was empty.
I hadn’t planned to look into anything.
But the nurses’ hushed conversation still drifted in through the half-open door.
“The Alpha in the VIP ward upstairs really dotes on his Luna and pups.”
“He’s still comforting Isabella right now.”
“It’s just a bit strange.”
“He only comes at night, and he won’t let us say anything. Maybe he’s afraid people will get jealous.”
I lay there, slowly digesting every word.
Tears soaked silently into the pillow.
The next day, I was flipping through a magazine.
Suddenly, rapid, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Before I could react, the door was kicked open.
Henry stormed in, his face dark, his Alpha pressure fully unleashed.
“Jenifer, why did you lay hands on the pups?”
“Hand them over.”
I frowned and shook my head instinctively.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t left the room all day.”
The next second, Isabella burst forward crying, clutching the hem of my clothes.
“Jenifer, I’m begging you… please tell me where Theo and Leo are.”
“If you’re still angry because Henry didn’t save you first during the accident—”
“You can hit me, yell at me, anything. But the pups are innocent…”
I was just about to defend myself when Henry suddenly crushed the bones in my right hand.
Pain shot through me, forcing a muffled cry from my throat.
“Jenifer.”
His voice was frighteningly low.
“I’ll give you one more chance.”
“Talk.”
“Where are the pups?”
The urgency in his eyes shoved the already fragile trust between us straight off a cliff.
I suddenly laughed, mockingly and bitterly.
“This has nothing to do with me.”
“But you—”
“You look more anxious than the pups’ biological father.”
The veins at Henry’s temple throbbed as he was about to speak when his secretary rushed in, panic written all over her face.
“Henry!”
“The police have found the two pups.”
“According to the traffickers who were caught—”
“The one who ordered the kidnapping was Jenifer.”
I jerked my head up straight into Henry’s eyes, now completely sunken and cold.
A chill pierced straight through me.
“Jenifer,”
his voice was icy,
“how long are you going to keep lying?”
“You’ve disappointed me too much.”
At that moment, my heart hurt so badly it went numb.
I looked at the man I had loved for three full years.
I felt unfamiliar and absurd.
Henry turned and walked away.
Immediately after, two bodyguards stepped forward and wrenched my arms behind my back without mercy.
They dragged me to the police station and shoved me into a freezing holding cell.
“Henry said when you’re willing to admit your mistake, that’s when he’ll bail you out.”
I stared at them in disbelief.
I took a step back and suddenly my scalp burned with pain.
A rough hand yanked my hair back.
“Jenifer, right?”
“Get over here.”
