Chapter 5

As soon as I finished speaking, the female lawyer's eyes went wide. She pointed her finger at me, her voice sharp and piercing, "Didn't your fucking parents teach you any manners?! You little brat!

Hearing this, I slowly lifted my eyelids and looked at her coldly, saying word by word, "Say that again."

Clearly, the female lawyer lost some confidence. Her eyes darted around uncertainly, but she still said with contempt, "You want me to say it, so I'll say it? I'm a lawyer. What are you? Just some stupid girl. Out at this hour, you must have dropped out of school, right? No wonder you have no class."

Even in this situation, I maintained my cold and proud demeanor.

Unhurriedly, I took out my phone, held up the screen, and waved it in front of her, then pulled a smile, "Sorry, I accidentally turned on the recording when I came over."

Instantly, the female lawyer's eyes widened in alarm. Her face turned pale, and instinctively she tried to snatch my phone.

I quickly dodged. She tried to grab it again, so I said calmly, "Recording in a public place is my right. You still want to hit me? A lawyer hitting someone—I'll make sure this becomes a big deal."

Immediately, the female lawyer hurriedly looked around, then reluctantly stopped.

Her teeth were clenched tight, and there seemed to be a surge of resentment between her upper and lower teeth, making her expression even darker.

"Delete that recording right now! Or I'll call the police! You're interfering with our normal work—this is an offense of picking quarrels and provoking trouble!"!"

I couldn't help but laugh, my eyes flashing with amusement, "Offense of picking quarrels and provoking trouble? Are you sure you're a lawyer? Go ahead and call the police then. I'd actually like to see which law firm could produce a talent like you."

The female lawyer felt as if her whole body were being scorched by fire. Anger twisted her features as she said through gritted teeth, "You think I really don't dare? You have absolutely no manners! If your parents won't discipline you, someone else will. The police will teach you how to behave!"

"Then call the police. I'm not stopping you."

"You!" The female lawyer pulled out her phone, trembling with anger, but still didn't dare dial the police.

The other two men and one woman quickly tried to mediate.

The male lawyer from earlier tried to smooth things over, "Ms. Amelia Harrington, don't be angry. She's just a kid, and what she said earlier actually makes sense. We can really approach it the way she suggested. There's still half an hour before the hearing starts. Let's discuss it quickly."

So her name is Amelia Harrington. I felt contempt inside.

"Discuss my ass! You're actually listening to some naive girl? Did you waste all those years studying law?" Amelia remained arrogant and domineering.

I smirked, "Your client is really unlucky to have a lawyer like you representing them."

With that, I started to leave, but the male lawyer stopped me, "Young lady, this case is very difficult and unprecedented, so we can't just rush into it blindly."

This male lawyer had a better attitude, so I said a few more words to him, "If the case is so difficult, shouldn't you have discussed all the response strategies before the hearing? You're cramming at the last minute?"

"No, because this pet poisoning case is unprecedented, we communicated with the judge before the hearing. The chances of winning aren't great. We're going into this hearing just to give it a try, but at this final moment, we still feel the outcome won't be ideal, so we haven't entered the courthouse yet. We're taking the opportunity to discuss more."

Perhaps because my argument with Amelia was too loud, quite a few passersby looked over.

Even James across the street was about to come over. I waved my hand at him, signaling that he didn't need to come.

The group followed my gaze, and when they saw that Horch A8, everyone's eyes widened in shock, their mouths hanging open.

Understanding my meaning, James stopped in his tracks.

"I was actually going to help you guys. I'm confident I could win this case, but unfortunately, this so-called lawyer, Amelia Harrington—no, she doesn't even count as a lawyer—is really disgusting. So I wish you the best of luck." With that, I started to leave again.

"You..."

The male lawyer stopped Amelia with his eyes, then blocked my way, "Young lady, don't be like that. I apologize to you on Amelia's behalf. Amelia is an experienced lawyer with lots of expertise. It's just that this case is really tricky. We've offended you; please forgive us."

"This isn't about the case. This is about character. From the moment you took on this case, the win or loss has already determined your standing in the legal circle, hasn't it?" My tone was indifferent.

Everyone's pupils contracted slightly, their expressions becoming complicated.

Amelia's attitude remained arrogant and domineering. Just as she was about to speak, the male lawyer stopped her with his eyes again, then smiled apologetically at me, "Young lady, don't leave yet. Wait for us a moment."

With that, the male lawyer pulled Amelia and signaled the others to walk to a spot about fifty yards away from me. I watched them indifferently, and while they had their backs to me whispering, I slowly walked forward.

"Why don't we let this young lady try?" the male lawyer said in a low voice.

"Are you crazy?" Amelia was furious.

"I'm not crazy. This case will definitely be lost, and if we lose, Mr. Fairfax will make us pay for it. We might not even be able to work as lawyers anymore."

"She's not a lawyer, she can't participate in the trial!"

"Rules are dead. Have her sign the power of attorney, and during the hearing, she can sit on our side. If anything goes wrong, we'll push all the responsibility onto her. We have to protect ourselves."

Hearing this, I sneered inside. Indeed, you can't judge a book by its cover. Someone who looks kind can be so dirty inside.

After their discussion, the other female lawyer inadvertently saw me standing behind them. Startled, she quickly signaled the others with her eyes, and everyone immediately fell silent.

The male lawyer looked at me awkwardly, forcing himself to stay calm, "We were just discussing the case. Young lady, you're a natural-born lawyer. What you said makes a lot of sense. Would you like to come in with us and observe?"

"You mean you're inviting me to the hearing?" I cut straight to the point.

The male lawyer cleared his throat, "Sort of. If you can win the case, I'll pay you."

I smirked and said dismissively, "You can't afford me."

Amelia got angry and mocked, "Such big talk? We can't afford you? What are you?"

"Then I'll be going."

"Hey, Amelia, stop talking. Young lady, don't mind her. I apologize to you. You can name your price. As lawyers, we never look down on anyone."

"Give me a break. I think she has mental problems, fantasizing that she's some social elite and putting on airs here." Every word from Amelia was mean and mocking.
