Chapter 2 The Forbidden Mark
Elara woke early in the small servant room she shared with two other girls. The sun barely touched the palace towers, and the halls were quiet. She could still feel the glow from the necklace yesterday burning in her mind. Her wrist itched where the hidden mark slept. She pulled her sleeve down over it and tried to ignore it.
She went to the kitchen to start her chores. The smells of fresh bread and boiling stew filled the air. Servants moved quickly around her. Everyone whispered, looking at her sometimes. Elara lowered her head. She did not want trouble. She never did. But trouble always seemed to find her.
While washing the large pots, she looked at her wrist. The mark was glowing faintly now. She gasped and pulled her sleeve over it. It had never shown like this before. Her heart beat fast. She did not understand what it meant. She tried to think of the necklace, of Liora, of Kael. Her hands shook. She wished Draven was here. He always made her feel safe.
Suddenly, she felt a cold presence behind her. She turned quickly. A woman stood there, cloaked in deep blue. Her eyes were bright, like she could see everything.
“Elara,” the woman said softly. “Do not be afraid. I am the High Oracle. I have come because your destiny is beginning.”
Elara stared at her. Her voice was small. “My… destiny?”
“Yes,” the Oracle said. She stepped closer. “The mark on your wrist means you carry forbidden magic. You are not just a servant. You are the last of a line that was destroyed many years ago. Your power is greater than anyone in this palace can imagine.”
Elara’s mouth went dry. “Forbidden magic… me? No, that cannot be true. I am just a girl. I work here. I clean. I serve.”
The Oracle smiled faintly. “You are more than you know. But you must hide it. If the king finds out, they will try to kill you. You must learn to control it, or it will control you.”
Elara felt dizzy. Her hands shook. “I… I do not know how. I do not know anything about magic. Why me?”
“Because the magic chose you,” the Oracle said. “Your people were strong. You are their heir. And someone is already watching you. You must be careful.”
Elara swallowed hard. Her thoughts turned to Kael. He had seen something yesterday. Would he tell the king? Would he hurt her? She felt fear creeping up her spine.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps in the corridor. She jumped. The Oracle looked at her.
“Go. Now. Hide,” the Oracle whispered.
Elara ran toward the servant hall, her heart pounding. She ducked into a corner and held her wrist tight. The mark burned faintly, reminding her that she was different. That she was dangerous. She did not want to be, but she could not stop it.
Later, in the dining hall, she saw Kael. He was walking slowly, his eyes scanning the room. His gaze flicked toward her for a moment. Elara froze. She quickly turned her face down and pretended to be busy. She could feel her cheeks burning. Was he suspicious? Did he know about the glow?
Draven appeared next to her. He gave her a small nod. “Are you okay?” he whispered.
“I… I think so,” she said quietly. “But something is happening. I feel it in my wrist. I do not know why.”
Draven frowned. “We will figure it out. I will protect you.”
Elara wanted to believe him. She wanted to feel safe. But deep down she knew danger was closer than she thought. Liora’s eyes followed her constantly. That girl hated her. She wanted her out. And now, with the mark glowing… Elara was a target.
She went to the storage room to fetch clean dishes. Her hands trembled. She could feel the magic inside her stirring. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The mark pulsed. It felt alive. She wanted to control it but it would not listen.
Then she heard a whisper. Soft, almost a hiss. “Elara…”
She spun around but no one was there. The corridor was empty. She felt a shiver run down her spine. Her heart pounded like a drum. The mark on her wrist burned stronger. She clutched it tightly. Something was calling to her. Something powerful. Something dangerous.
She ran back to the kitchen and tried to act normal. The other servants glanced at her nervously. She did not care. She needed to understand the mark. She needed to understand her magic.
During the afternoon, she sneaked into the pantry. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it. Her hands shook. The Oracle’s words repeated in her mind. “Someone is already watching you.” She looked around. Was it Kael? Was it Liora? She felt fear curl in her stomach.
She pressed her sleeve tighter against her wrist. The mark glowed again, faint but steady. She swallowed hard. She had to hide it. She could not let anyone see. Not yet. Not until she understood.
The day passed slowly. Elara did all her chores, cleaned, carried water, and tried not to draw attention. But she felt eyes on her constantly. She could sense whispers, some frightened, some cruel. Everyone in the palace knew something had happened yesterday. Everyone had seen the glow.
As the sun began to set, she felt exhausted. She walked to the servant room, thinking she would be safe there. But when she arrived, a small folded note was on her bed. Her name was written in careful letters. She picked it up and read.
“Elara, they know. Hide your power or you will die. Someone will come for you tonight.”
Her heart stopped. She dropped the note. Her hands shook. She could feel the mark burning stronger than before. She backed into the corner of the room, pressed her hands against her chest, trying to calm her racing heart.
Outside the room, she could hear footsteps in the corridor. Heavy boots. Guards. Her chest tightened. She pressed herself against the wall, holding her sleeve over the mark. The glow was bright now. Her magic wanted to burst free.
Suddenly, a shadow appeared at the doorway. She could see the shape of someone tall. She held her breath. Could it be Draven? Or someone else?
A voice spoke softly but with authority.
“Elara… you cannot hide anymore.”
The shadow stepped closer. Her heart skipped a beat. The room felt colder. The mark burned hotter. She wanted to scream. She wanted to run. But she was trapped.
And then she realized… the person in the doorway was not there to protect her.
Her eyes widened in fear.
