Chapter 4 Karl's Confusion

Elara sat on the cold stone floor. Her back pressed to the wall. Her wrists hurt. The mark under her sleeve burned. It pulsed like it wanted to come out. She hugged her arms tight. Her hands shook.

The cell was dark. Outside, torches flickered. She could hear footsteps. Guards walking. Their boots echoed on the stone. Her heart beat fast. She tried to calm down but could not.

She thought of the king. Angry. Furious. She thought of the guard who brought her here. His eyes had been hard and cold. She felt trapped. She pressed her sleeve against her wrist. She had to hide the mark.

Suddenly, a noise came from the corridor. Crackle. Snap. Fire. Smoke.

Elara froze. Her heart jumped. Flames? In the palace? She could smell smoke through the door. Panic ran through her chest. She pressed herself tighter against the wall.

The mark under her sleeve pulsed stronger. Sparks danced under the fabric. She hugged her sleeves more. Her magic wanted to move. She tried to stop it. It would not stop. It wanted out.

Outside, guards shouted. The fire spread fast. People screamed. Some ran. Others fell to the floor coughing. The smell of smoke and burnt wood filled the hall.

Elara closed her eyes. Her chest hurt. She wanted to run but she was trapped. The magic moved inside her. It pulsed. It tingled. It wanted to save someone.

She pressed her hands together. Her fingers itched. Sparks jumped. The glow from the mark leaked under her sleeve.

A guard ran past the cell door. He shouted, “The fire! Kael is near someone! Help!”

Elara’s eyes widened. Kael? Near the fire? Was he okay? She wanted to help. She pressed her palms against her chest. The magic surged. Sparks danced again.

Her body trembled. She tried to hide it. But the magic would not listen. It pulsed brighter. It pushed against her sleeves. She whispered, “Please not now…”

She heard boots running. Kael’s voice. Strong. Angry. Shouting. “Stay back! Everyone stay back!”

Her heart beat faster. The magic inside her pulsed more. It wanted to reach him. To help. To protect. But she was trapped in the cell.

She pressed herself to the wall. Her knees hugged tight. She tried to breathe slow. But the magic moved under her skin. Sparks flickered from her fingers.

The fire grew louder. Heat pressed against the stone walls. Her chest felt tight. Her body wanted to move. She wanted to help Kael. She wanted to save someone. She could not.

Then she heard him. Kael’s voice again. Softer this time. Almost a whisper. “Who are you really, Elara?”

Her heart skipped. She pressed her sleeve harder over her wrist. The glow escaped more. Sparks flickered. Her chest pounded. Her hands shook.

The guards outside shouted. “Keep her in place! She is dangerous!”

Elara hugged herself tighter. She tried to make the magic stay hidden. But it would not stop. Her mark burned brighter. Sparks jumped. The cell shook slightly.

She pressed her palms together. Whispered softly, “I am not dangerous. I am not dangerous.”

The cell was small. The walls felt close. Her heart pounded. Her magic wanted out. Sparks flickered under her sleeve. Her body trembled.

She pressed her head to her knees. Hugged her arms. The glow escaped more. Her fingers tingled.

Outside, the fire spread. Smoke and screams. Kael moved through the hall. Guards shouted. People ran. The palace felt alive with chaos.

Elara felt the magic pulsing stronger. She wanted to stop it. She could not. She whispered, “I am not ready. I am not ready.”

Her mark burned bright under her sleeve. Sparks danced. She could feel it moving. It wanted to escape. Her chest heaved. Her fingers trembled.

Then she heard it. A voice. Soft. Deep. Inside her head or maybe outside. She did not know.

“Elara… your power cannot hide. You cannot hide anymore.”

Her eyes widened. She pressed her arms to her chest. The cell shook. Sparks jumped under her sleeve. Her heart raced.

She hugged herself tighter. The glow grew brighter. Her body shook. She could not hide it. She could not stop it.

The fire outside roared louder. The palace walls echoed. Kael ran through the flames. His face tense. His hands ready. He did not know her magic yet. But the danger was real.

Elara pressed her palms together. Hugged her knees. Her mark pulsed brighter. Sparks flickered under her sleeve. Her breath was fast.

The cell door rattled. A guard shouted. “Keep her locked! She is dangerous!”

Elara hugged herself tight. The magic pulsed harder. Her chest tight. Her back against the stone wall. Sparks dancing under her sleeves.

She whispered softly, “I am not ready. I am not ready.”

And the fire outside crackled louder. The palace full of screams. Her magic alive. Her fear and power mixing.

She knew tonight would change everything.
