Chapter 2

Elizabeth's eyes flew open as she gasped for air.

What came into view was a luxurious dressing room. In the floor-length mirror, a deathly pale face stared back at her, wearing a strapless wedding dress.

Elizabeth froze. Instinctively, she raised her hand and pressed it hard against her left chest.

A strong heartbeat came through, making her fingertips tingle.

Her heart was still there!

She looked at the electronic clock on the wall—October 10, 2023.

This was two years ago! The day she married that bastard Daniel!

She had been reborn? Had God truly heard her dying curse and given her a chance to live again?

She almost laughed out loud, but her eyes instantly stung with tears.

She was still alive, and Matthew was still alive too!

Just then, the dressing room door was pushed open from outside.

"Elizabeth, are you ready?" A gentle voice rang out, making Elizabeth's whole body tremble.

Daniel walked over with a tender smile on his face, wearing a white suit and holding a bouquet of lily of the valley.

In her past life, this was the man who had cut open her chest with his own hands.

She remembered what Daniel had said then: "Elizabeth, Sophia's heart is failing. You love me so much, won't you give her your heart?"

Back then, he had worn this same smile—so gentle it was bone-chilling.

Her stomach churned.

Elizabeth couldn't hold it back and dry-heaved, clutching her chest.

Daniel's smile froze for a moment. Then he quickly stepped forward, trying to put his arm around Elizabeth's shoulder: "What's wrong? Didn't you sleep well last night?"

Just as he was about to touch Elizabeth, she dodged his hand.

"Don't touch me!" Elizabeth's voice was shrill, startling the makeup artist so badly that she dropped her powder compact.

Daniel's hand hung in mid-air, a flash of malice in his eyes, quickly covered up.

"Elizabeth, what's wrong? Are you still scared of Matthew?"

"Don't be afraid. We're about to have our wedding ceremony. He'll never be able to hurt you again."

When he mentioned Matthew's name, Elizabeth's heart clenched painfully.

She instinctively looked at her left wrist wrapped in gauze, where bloodstains were still faintly visible.

Those were wounds from cutting her wrist.

The memory flooded back.

Just last night, to force Matthew to let her go, to force him to agree to let her marry Daniel.

She had pointed at Matthew's nose and called him a psycho, accused him of restricting her freedom.

She had even cut her own wrist to force Matthew to make a promise.

"Matthew, if you don't let go, I'll die right in front of you!"

That day, those eyes that were usually so decisive and ruthless were filled with pain.

He had stayed silent for a long time, so long that Elizabeth thought he might kill her.

But in the end, he only said with red-rimmed eyes, his voice hoarse: "Okay."

"Elizabeth, I'll let go. From now on, we'll never see each other again, in life or death."

He kept his word. In her past life, until her death, Matthew truly never appeared before her again.

Only after she died did he go mad...

Elizabeth slapped herself hard across the face, bright red finger marks immediately appearing.

The dressing room fell deathly silent. Everyone was stunned by this sudden scene.

Daniel frowned: "Elizabeth, what's wrong with you?"

Elizabeth slowly raised her head, staring hard at Daniel.

"Are you under too much pressure?" Daniel tried to reach for her hand.

"Don't touch me with your filthy hands!" Elizabeth stepped back and grabbed a fruit knife from the vanity table.

A cold gleam flashed as the blade pointed straight at Daniel's throat.

The makeup artists screamed and huddled together in fear.

Daniel was also startled and backed away repeatedly: "Elizabeth! Are you crazy? That's a knife! Put it down!"

"I was crazy." Elizabeth's hand holding the knife trembled slightly. "But now I'm clear-headed."

Looking at Daniel's hypocritical face, she just wanted to rip that mask right off.

"Daniel, you're a demon!"

Before the words had even finished, a flash of ruthlessness crossed Elizabeth's eyes.

Without any hesitation, she gripped the fruit knife tightly and stabbed it viciously toward Daniel's chest!

Daniel let out a scream.

But he was an adult man after all, and in that life-or-death moment, he instinctively shifted his body.

The blade missed by a few inches, failing to pierce his heart and instead plunging into his left shoulder.

Blood gushed out, staining his white suit red.

"You tried to kill me?" Daniel clutched his shoulder, eyes wide.

He never dreamed that Elizabeth, who loved him so deeply, would try to kill him on their wedding day.

"What a shame." Elizabeth shook her head regretfully.

Her current body was too weak, her strength too small.

If she got another chance, she would definitely pierce straight through his heart.

Elizabeth tore off her veil and quickly kicked off her high heels. Taking advantage of the chaos, she ran outside.

"Stop her!" Daniel ordered the bodyguards outside in a deep voice.

Elizabeth rushed out onto the street in one breath. Without stopping to catch her breath, she desperately waved her hands to flag down a car.

A taxi screeched to a halt beside the road, startled by her.

"Drive! Drive now!" Elizabeth yanked open the door and dove in, her voice shaking.

The driver was a middle-aged man who turned around to look.

With one glance, he was so scared his cigarette fell out of his mouth.

The woman in the back seat was wearing a blood-stained wedding dress, her hair disheveled, her face deathly pale.

"Ma'am, what happened to you..."

"Go to Riverside Crown Estate! Hurry! Go to Riverside Crown Estate!" Elizabeth shouted loudly, her eyes constantly glancing back.

The driver had been hesitating about whether to refuse the fare, but when he heard that address, his face instantly turned pale.

"Riverside Crown Estate! No way! I wouldn't go there even if you killed me!"

"That's where the devil lives!"

In this city, Matthew's name was taboo.

Rumor had it his methods were brutal, and anyone who crossed him would disappear from this world the next day.

What ordinary person would dare go near that place?

"I'm begging you, I have an emergency!" Elizabeth pleaded tearfully.

"You'll die if you go there! And you'll get me killed too!" The driver could tell this was some rich family drama that could easily end with someone dead.

"Ma'am, don't drag me into this! I've got a family to feed, I can't afford to mess with these people!"

As he spoke, the driver opened the door, walked around to the back seat, and pulled Elizabeth out of the car.

Elizabeth fell hard onto the asphalt road, looking utterly disheveled.

The driver seized the chance to jump back in the car and sped off with a press of the gas pedal, spraying exhaust fumes in Elizabeth's face.

Elizabeth lay on the ground, coughing violently.

Passersby pointed and whispered, but not one person dared to help her up.

The sun beat down mercilessly, heating the asphalt road until it was scorching hot.

Elizabeth ran barefoot on it, ignoring the pain under her feet, sprinting wildly.
