Chapter 5
One enforcer clapped his shoulder, sighing.
“She’s unwell. Be patient with her.”
As they turned to leave, I broke from the room and grabbed their sleeve.
“I’m not sick! Look—this is today’s video from the realtor. The house didn’t look like this!”
Sweat slicked my palm as I fumbled open the chat. I’d asked the agent to confirm the time and date on film.
The enforcer watched. His brows knit tighter. He showed the clip to Michael.
“Explain this.”
Michael’s lips sealed shut. My mother stepped in front of him, tears sliding down her cheeks.
“This isn’t Michael’s fault. It’s mine. I forced her to choose a mate when she came of age. She rebelled. After the accident, her memory broke. That’s why she denies it now.”
She raised her hand to strike her face, but the enforcer stopped her.
“And this video?” he pressed.
She lowered her gaze.
“I begged the realtor to play along. To soothe her. To make her believe. Please don’t punish Michael for my failure.”
She tapped her phone. A recording played—her voice speaking to the agent.
“Yes, my daughter’s memory is broken. Please record the video she asked for. I’ll take responsibility.”
The evidence was damning.
The two enforcers exchanged a look, then pulled me aside.
“Miss Moss, we’ll arrange further medical evaluation—”
“No!” I screamed. “They planned this! All of it!”
Tears streamed down my face.
“Please—ask my colleagues, my friends. Investigate! I never bonded. That pup isn’t mine. I don’t want Michael!”
Moved by my breakdown, one enforcer nodded.
“Very well. We’ll investigate further. But until then, everyone must come to the Enforcement Bureau for statements.”
Like grasping a lifeline, I clung to his sleeve and fled that cursed home.
At the bureau, they summoned my friends, my coworkers.
Michael sat beside me, deliberately tilting his collar to reveal the faint glow of a bond mark. His voice thick with false guilt:
“Darling, this is my fault. I didn’t care for you properly. Once this investigation ends, I’ll take responsibility. But when the truth is confirmed… please, don’t let your emotions spiral. Trust the results. Trust that we can still live happily.”
