Chapter 10 010

The next morning Kael was up before dawn.

He dressed quickly in the dim light of his dorm room, checked his system, and headed out while the corridors were still empty and the academy was wrapped in early morning quiet.

The outdoor track was deserted at this hour. A thin layer of mist hung low over the field and the air carried the sharp cold of early morning. Kael stepped onto the track, exhaled once, and started running.

He pushed harder than yesterday. His legs churned through the mist and his breathing stayed controlled and rhythmic as lap after lap disappeared beneath his feet. The world around him was completely still except for the soft sound of his footsteps against the dirt.

By the time he crossed the fifteen kilometer mark the sky had shifted from black to a deep bruised purple.

He dropped to the ground immediately and began his push-ups. One hundred clean reps with his chest touching the ground on every descent.

[100 Push-ups Quest Completed! +8 Attribute Points]

Sixteen points. He distributed them without hesitation.

Eight into Agility. Eight into Reflex.

He stood and rolled his wrists, feeling the familiar surge of the upgrade settling through his body. His movements felt tighter and more economical, like everything unnecessary had been quietly stripped away overnight.

He was still standing at the edge of the track when he heard footsteps behind him.

He turned.

Lena Park stood at the entrance to the training field with a water bottle in one hand and her academy jacket zipped to the collar against the cold. She stopped when she saw him, her expression registering a brief flash of surprise before settling back into composure.

They looked at each other across twenty meters of empty field.

"You train at this hour?" Kael asked.

"I could ask you the same thing," she replied evenly.

A short silence passed between them. Lena did not move to leave but she did not move closer either. She stood at the threshold with the careful stillness of someone who made every decision deliberately.

Kael turned back toward the track and began a slow cool down walk along the inner lane. After a moment he heard her footsteps enter the field behind him.

She did not follow him onto the track. Instead she moved to the far side of the field and began her own warm up routine — stretching, footwork drills, basic movement patterns that looked entirely consistent with a Silver 1 wind talent.

Perfectly ordinary. Perfectly controlled.

But Talent Resonance hummed steadily beneath his awareness, and the readout from Talent Detector sat clearly in his peripheral vision.

[Lena Park — True Talent: Storm Convergence Lv.3 — Suppressed]

He completed his cool down lap and moved to the benches at the field's edge to sit and recover. He pulled out his water and drank slowly, watching the sky continue to lighten overhead.

After several minutes Lena finished her warm up and walked toward the exit. She passed within five meters of his bench.

She slowed slightly without fully stopping.

"You beat Matthew Kane yesterday," she said, not looking at him directly.

"I did," Kael said.

"And Jobe."

"Yes."

A pause. She still did not look at him fully, her gaze directed somewhere slightly past his shoulder.

"You're entering the tournament," she said.

"Yes."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"The top bracket isn't what it looks like from the outside," she said quietly. "The students who hold the top three spots have been protecting them for over a year. They have arrangements with each other. The tournament format allows for it." She finally glanced at him directly, brief and measured. "You should know that before you walk in expecting a clean competition."

Kael held her gaze calmly. "Thank you for telling me."

She studied him for exactly two seconds. Then she walked away toward the academy building without another word.

[QUEST UPDATE]

[Uncover why a student is concealing their true talent.]

[Progress: 2 of 3 investigative milestones reached.]

[Milestone Reward: +1 Talent Point]

[Talent Points: 21/21]

[SYSTEM OBSERVATION: Target has initiated voluntary contact. Trust threshold at 12%. Continue organic engagement to progress final milestone.]

Kael looked at the notification carefully.

Trust threshold. The system was tracking the relationship with measurable precision, treating it like a variable to be developed rather than simply a social interaction.

He filed that away and stood up from the bench.

The tournament bracket was arranged. The top students had agreements. A girl with a Gold tier talent hidden beneath a Silver registration had just voluntarily warned him about it before walking away.

None of it was coincidence.

He closed the screen and started walking toward the academy building.

Nineteen days. Two more levels to unlock the hidden talent slot. A tournament built on arrangements and back room deals waiting to be dismantled.

He thought about what Lena had said. The top bracket isn't what it looks like from the outside.

A slow smile crossed his face as he pushed through the academy doors.

Good, he thought. He had never been interested in things that looked exactly like what they were.
