Chapter1
Beyond the airport fence a hundred yards away, hundreds—no, thousands—of zombies were surging forward like a tidal wave.
"Get on the helicopter, Chloe!" I roared.
She clung to the edge of the cabin door with all her strength, her face full of self-righteous resolve. "No! I'm not leaving without David! He said he'd be here any second!"
"Arthur, even if you've always been jealous of David, can you at least show a little humanity right now?" Chloe's mother, Helen, was curled up in one of the cabin seats, shouting at me. "Will it kill you to wait two more minutes? Do you have to be this petty?"
Two minutes? In less than thirty seconds, the defense line would collapse completely.
I remembered my last life. They had acted the same way then, but I'd been terrified Chloe would die. I knocked her out and dragged her onto the rescue helicopter, forcing her into the cabin. Helen cursed me out the whole time, and I didn't care.
It wasn't until the helicopter lifted off that David finally came running out of the terminal—only to be swarmed on the spot, dragged down, and torn apart alive by the zombie horde.
After that, we survived in the apocalypse for two years. I threw my life on the line to protect their whole family, and what did I get in return?
The moment I came back after killing zombies, Chloe shoved me straight into the horde.
"This is what you owed David." She looked down at me as I fell into the mass of zombies, her eyes cold and merciless.
Without the slightest hesitation, she stomped on my fingers and watched me fall from the rooftop, where a dozen zombies ripped open my throat and tore into my flesh.
I closed my eyes full of rage and hatred, never expecting that when I opened them again, I would be back on the day we boarded the rescue helicopter.
"When are you going to stop being so heartless? If you want to leave, then leave by yourself!" Chloe's hysterical voice poured into my ears again.
Looking at that fake, sanctimonious face, I felt sick.
"Suit yourself."
I didn't try to pull her anymore. I turned and walked straight to the back of the cabin, clicked my seat belt into place, and closed my eyes.
Chloe froze in disbelief, the noble act she had been putting on cracking at once. "Y-you... you're really just going to leave me alone?"
Before she could process it, a terrified shout rang out from nearby.
David came scrambling onto the helicopter.
"Take off!" A soldier yanked the cabin door shut. The helicopter shot into the air, and the raging zombie horde below grabbed nothing but empty air.
"David!" Chloe covered her mouth, trembling with excitement.
Right there on that escape flight, in front of me—her fiancé—she threw herself into David's arms, and the two of them kissed passionately.
Helen didn't care how that looked to me in the slightest. Instead, she shot me a glare. "See that, Arthur? If we hadn't insisted on waiting for David, he'd be dead! You really need to learn how to be more generous!"
Generous?
I looked at the couple making out in front of everyone and couldn't even be bothered to waste the energy arguing.
Now that I had a second chance, I didn't have a shred of feeling left for that woman. In my eyes, the three of them were nothing but rotting meat waiting to happen. Calmly, I drew my tactical knife and settled into the safest defensive corner I could find in the shadows.
