Chapter 4 Teaching Samantha a Lesson
Samantha's lips curved into a smile as she gently caressed the necklace, her tone coaxing.
"Sis, if John knew you gave me such an expensive gift, he'd definitely think more highly of you."
Her voice carried a contempt she herself hadn't even noticed. Her greed had reached such an impatient level that she actually treated Olivia like a fool, saying bluntly, "The necklace is only a little over three million, but John's good impression of you is priceless."
With that, Samantha actually handed the necklace directly to the sales associate to wrap up, and playfully winked at Olivia, "Sis, thank you so much. I'll put in lots of good words for you in front of him."
Her words weren't completely baseless.
After all, the whole school knew that Samantha and John were inseparable.
John always listened to at least eighty percent of what Samantha said.
In her past life, Olivia might have foolishly believed that Samantha genuinely cared about her and wanted to help her win John over.
But now, it was like watching a clown show.
Olivia acted as if she hadn't heard anything, pulling out her phone and starting to browse racing videos.
An awkward silence filled the space for a full half minute.
Until the sales associate handed the POS machine to Samantha.
"Miss, we can offer you a 20% discount, for a total of 2.88 million."
Samantha felt awkward and instinctively looked at Olivia beside her.
"Sis, the sales lady is asking you to pay."
Olivia glanced at her leisurely, "You pick something, and I pay for it? Being shameless is one thing, but how can you be so brazen about it?"
Samantha got angry, her voice rising and becoming shrill. "You're the one who brought me here and told me to pick whatever I wanted, so of course you should pay."
Olivia sneered, "I did tell you to pick whatever you wanted, but I never said I'd buy it for you. You dared to try on a three-million necklace—can't you afford it? If you can't afford it, why did you try it on? Planning to mooch off me from the start? When I throw food to a dog, at least it knows to wag its tail. You think barking twice is worth three million?"
Samantha was so shocked her eyes nearly popped out. She had no mental capacity left to wonder why Olivia had suddenly changed—she only felt the sales associate's gaze drilling into her back.
Her face flushed red instantly, and she said through gritted teeth, "You!"
The corner of Olivia's mouth stayed in a mocking curve. "Looks like you really can't afford it."
Other customers in the store were drawn to the scene, casting curious or disdainful looks, accompanied by whispered comments.
"No way, coming into this kind of store without money? Isn't that just wasting the sales associate's time?"
"Some people are just vain, coming in to take a few photos for their social media, putting on airs in front of others. What thick skin."
Samantha's face looked ready to bleed.
Getting the words "I'm not buying it" out was especially difficult.
But this was three million—her dad couldn't even earn that much in a year.
Whatever. Even though Olivia seemed very different today, changed somehow, based on her understanding of her, no matter how much she changed, one thing remained constant—her deep love for John.
There would be plenty of opportunities in the future to squeeze money out of Olivia using John as an excuse.
Gritting her teeth, Samantha pulled out her phone and called Sam, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Dad, can you transfer three million to my account?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Sam's shocked voice came through. "What? Three million? What do you need that for?"
Samantha's voice got even lower, almost inaudible even to herself.
"I... I found a necklace I like, and Olivia won't pay for it..."
Sam was furious. "What kind of sense does that make? She's supposed to be your sister and she won't pay, but makes you pay instead? Give her the phone!"
Samantha glared at Olivia and handed her the phone.
Olivia took it and hung up directly.
The other customers couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"You!" Samantha was so angry she felt dizzy, pointing at Olivia wanting to say something, but swallowed it back.
She could only grit her teeth and call Sam again.
"She won't answer! Dad, just transfer the money quickly. I don't want to stay here another second!"
Sam could only swallow his anger for now and transfer the money to Samantha.
Only then did Samantha pull out her bank card and hand it to the sales associate, scanning the room and deliberately raising her voice. "It's only three million—who can't afford that!"
With the payment successful, the clerk handed the packaged necklace to Samantha with a big smile.
"Welcome back anytime!"
Samantha was in pain, and her smile was particularly fake.
She'd barely managed to save face.
Those mocking looks had turned into ridicule and sarcasm.
The bystanders' comments were especially grating.
"Who can't tell she's just trying to keep up appearances? Three million and she had to call and ask for it?"
"Buying a necklace, the whole family starves for a year—maybe she thinks it's worth it?"
Samantha bit her lip, glared fiercely at everyone, and quickly left.
The atmosphere in the Shaw family living room was strange.
Michael and Sylvia sat on the sofa, looking helpless.
Meanwhile, Sam and Linda stood with their hands on their hips, faces full of anger.
"Sis, brother-in-law, it's not that I can't spare this three million, but let's be fair—wasn't it your Liv who took our Samantha there? Isn't this obviously setting a trap for Samantha?"
Michael's expression was unreadable, but Sylvia looked somewhat guilty.
"Could there be some misunderstanding? Liv used to be very good to Samantha. Let's wait until they get back and ask—"
Before she could finish, the front door opened and Olivia walked in.
Samantha followed behind, her face extremely unpleasant.
Before anyone could ask, Samantha's eyes were already red. She quickly walked up to Sam, looking wronged.
"Dad, I don't know what I did to offend her, but she actually misled me and made me lose so much face."
Sam looked at his daughter with heartache, then glanced coldly at Olivia.
"I don't understand either. We're blood relatives after all. No matter how cruel someone's heart is, they shouldn't harm their own sister, right?"
Olivia laughed, her contempt obvious.
"Relatives who come begging for money every day—would you want them?"
Without waiting for their reactions, Olivia turned to Michael. "I took her there, but I didn't hold a knife to her throat and force her to buy the necklace. She bought it to satisfy her own vanity. Dad, they've scammed quite a bit of money from our family over the years. I think we should stop associating with these parasitic relatives."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Samantha shouted in anger.
"Sis, what do you mean! We're not as bad as you're making us out to be! Is it because you can't get John's attention, so you're jealous of my good relationship with him and taking it out on me?"
Olivia let out a cold laugh and raised her hand, delivering a slap.
After the crisp sound, Olivia's eyes were ice-cold, staring straight into Samantha's eyes.
"That's what taking it out on you actually looks like."
