Chapter 3 Under attack
The couple was surprised and fell silent. They refused to believe that they were treating her badly. They had just shown Natalie some care since she came, and that seemed to be neglected by the latter. Grace glanced at them, a mocking smile appearing on her face before starting to laugh, tears even flowing down her face.
She had always believed that she had lost favor cause of accusing Natalie of everything, but it seemed she was wrong. Here they were; they still couldn’t acknowledge that they were wrong, just pretending. She had thought that she didn’t care about them, but she was proven wrong; their actions cut her deeply.
“We are sorry, love. We just wanted to show Natalie that we love her and didn’t mean to neglect you,” Mr. Green said panickingly.
Since Grace was a child, she rarely cried, always pretending to be strong even when she was hurt. Now, seeing her crying, they panicked and started reflecting on what they had done.
“We shouldn’t have neglected you. Buying her things and not buying you. Even if we couldn’t buy you the same quantity as her, as she didn’t have anything, we should have bought you something you liked when we saw one in the mall. Took both of you out and not just her,” Mrs. Green said, though the more she spoke, the more she was stunned.
She had just wanted to apologise, but after speaking, she started realizing what she had done and knew that if she were the one who had been treated the same way, she would have been heartbroken. She felt pain. Also, Grace had never walked into the kitchen all her life, so why should she start right now? It was all their fault! The more she thought of her actions, the more she panicked and felt bad.
“Both of you are our daughters, and we will always treat you the same,” Mr. Green said with a reassuring smile and worry in his eyes.
All this time, as they spoke, Grace was frozen; she stared at them, without blinking, nothing. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. ‘Didn’t they seem not to accept the fact that they neglected me? Why the sudden change?’ She turned to Natalie and saw that she was calmly eating her meals.
“After the meals, I will take you both shopping and to a spa so that we can look beautiful tonight,” Mrs. Green said excitedly, thinking that Grace had forgiven them.
Grace averted her gaze from her mother when she heard that. “I am sorry, but I can’t accompany you. I need to go to the hospital to get my wound dressed,” Grace said as she felt that everything that was happening was too much for her to take.
They didn’t even wait for her to forgive them; they just dropped the topic, not caring what she felt. She was disappointed; the hope that had been created by their apology vanished in an instant.
She had initially wanted to request them to help her search for her biological parents, but with their sudden move, she couldn’t, which made her helpless.
Her biggest regret in her past life was not finding her biological parents; thus, she wanted to find them as soon as possible.
“We can go with you then; afterwards we go shopping,” Natalie suddenly spoke, getting Grace's attention, and she turned to the lady. With no choice, she slowly nodded her head.
“Then we can leave after breakfast,” she said, though she had different plans.
“Uhm, aren’t you going to change?” Mrs Green asked as she stared at Grace's outfit.
“What is wrong with my outfit?” Grace asked as she looked down at her outfit. She was wearing a cream sweatpant, a black 3D printed t-shirt, and black and white campus sneakers.
Her actions made everyone speechless. She was the one who cared most about her looks, but now? They glanced at each other, questions written on all their faces.
“I will drop you guys at the hospital; let’s go,” Mr Green said with a smile on his face, looking at his family. Grace sat in the car, lost in thought. She had been unable to turn down the family, leading to her current state.
Mrs. Green, beside her, was talking to the girls on each of her sides. However, it seemed hard, as Natalie was cold by nature.
She had initially thought that Grace would talk with her, but immediately, they got in the car, and Grace turned her face. After calling her for some time and receiving no reply, she knew the latter was lost in thought.
“She has a lot in her head. Let her be,” Natalie said after hearing her mother calling Grace for the fifth time.
Mrs. Green glanced at her before staring at Grace and sighed.
“I will take you guys to the spa afterwards; we haven’t been there for a long time,” she said, hoping to attract Grace's attention, but nothing.
When they arrived at the hospital, Grace stared at the hospital’s name for a long time as she felt that she seemed to have forgotten about something. She frowned deeper, but when she couldn’t recall what it was, she got out of the car as the others had already exited, and Mr. Green was staring at her worriedly.
“Grace, remember to tell us if anything is disturbing you,” Mr. Green said, causing her to halt, shutting the door. She looked at the man before nodding slowly.
“I see you remembered to come for dressing today, huh?” the doctor asked as he eyed Grace. He had been her doctor as she grew up, so he understood how much she detested hospitals.
“I can’t let my beauty be ruined, can we?” Grace said with a teasing yet proud look on her face, causing the man to start laughing while her mother shook her head helplessly.
This was the first time they had seen Grace smiling genuinely since she woke up. Natalie stared at her with a frown as she tried to see her through, but still, nothing, and that made her frustrated. Since when was she unable to see through someone as a psychologist?
“What were you thinking, mmh? Cooking?” the doctor said with a laugh after being told how she had hurt herself.
Grace pursed her lips, not commenting on anything.
Immediately, they had people outside running and shouting everywhere, causing them to look out of the window. Grace froze as she suddenly recalled what she had seemed to have forgotten.
“There is an attack; get the patients to safety, immediately!” someone shouted as he opened the door with a kick.
Natalie glanced at her mother, then at Grace, before holding them each on her side and dragging them outside.
“But my wound has not been dressed properly yet!” Grace shouted, reluctantly, to be dragged along.
“No!” Natalie said coldly before shooting Grace a cold glare, which made her shut her mouth.
Natalie took them to the end floor, opened a small door that was below the stairs, shoved them in before closing it and running to where the gunshots were coming from.
Grace’s mind was still in turmoil. She remembered that right; she had accused Natalie, and the mansion was in chaos. Natalie had received a phone call and hurriedly left. After an hour, they were phoned to tell them that she had been admitted to the hospital.
Realizing the situation, Grace hurriedly reached out for the lock and started to aggressively push it so that it could open.
“Grace, what are you doing? Isn’t it already enough that Natalie is out there? Do you always want to go out there? Do the two of you want to kill me?” Mrs. Green asked in fright when she saw her actions.
Grace frowned before knocking off the woman. She didn’t want anyone to stop her or even make the woman worried; she understood that she was already worried with Natalie being out. It was good for her to sleep at the moment.
After repeated kicks, she successfully opened the door.
