Chapter 4 A kiss?

My body trembled at the thought of becoming Weston Reed’s fifth fired assistant on my first day of work.

Oh God. It also meant I’d lose my chances of becoming an actress.

All I had to do was get my bag and leave quietly, yet I found myself tugging the handle of his office door with my heart pounding.

He was seated behind his desk, eyes glued to the laptop in front of him. Pressing my palm together, I stared everywhere but at him, deciding if I should start apologizing or wait for him to speak first.

His gaze shifted from the screen. For a moment, he just stared at me without an expression.

The most stupid idea struck my mind. “Mr. Weston, you asked for me. Is there something you’d like me to do?”

“Lots of things.” His mouth curved into a grin and he shut the laptop before leaning back. “But first we’d start with you telling me the last place you worked as an assistant.”

“Nowhere. I’m a fresh graduate,” I  admitted, sighing.

What did that have to do with anything though? Did he plan on investigating if I went around sending risky texts to my boss?

Tilting my chin downward, I inched closer to his desk, dropped to my knees and squinted, attempting the cute puppy-eyes. It had to work. “Before you fire me—”

He blinked, then slowly and disbelievingly, he shook his head, twirling around on his chair to face me. It was impossible not to catch the glimpse of mischief in his eyes.

“Who said anything about firing you? I just said there are lots of things I want you to do. You can’t do them if you’re gone, Jenny.”

My lips flattened into a frown and I looked at him quizzically before lifting myself up.

He slanted his head and shrugged. “Won’t you ask what I want you to do?”

Yeah, of course. “W-what do you want me to do?”

“I don’t know. You tell me.”

Dick! I wanted to shout, but I bit my tongue and took in deep breaths. Growing up, I’d been with annoying people. But you see Weston Reed? His annoyance was a discovery.

His lips twitched as if he was fighting back a laugh. “Alright. Which one do we start from?” He cleared his throat, proceeding to mimic my voice. “Tying me up, riding my pretty face or—”

Someone please kill me. “Okay! Okay!” I shouted, my face turning the deepest shades of red as I pressed two fingers on my ears and shut my eyes, bending my head. “I sent the text. You don’t have to read it out.”

And for what it’s worth, I sounded nothing like the sound he made. What was I even thinking when I sent those texts? Slowly, I opened my eyes, lifted my head, then pulled my fingers away from my ears.

He adjusted his collar before shifting a strand of hair from his face. “I think you forgot to include how you couldn’t stop gazing at my chest in my dressing room.”

My face got hotter. Regardless of who was supposed to receive it, it was the most embarrassing text. I ambled over to the couch in the room and slumped down.

“Mr. Weston, that text was a mistake. I’d really appreciate it if we kept it to ourselves.” I scratched the back of my neck. “Moreover I was talking about my old boss and I deeply regret even thinking of sending it during work hours.”

He pressed his thumb on his chin, giving me a questioning gaze. Maybe he was wondering who asked me to sit.

“You said earlier that you were a fresh college graduate. Okay, I believe you had a boss before me. But do you go around stealing all your boss’s shirts?”

His forehead wrinkled a bit. He was clearly having fun.

My jaw tightened as my breath burst in and out. I ignored him and crossed my legs together, moving my gaze to the painting on the wall. It was the only colorful thing there.

Everything from the seats, desk, walls were black and white. It wasn’t my first time seeing the interior of his office. Edits of him in it were all over tiktok, made by fan girls dying to be with him.

“Mm. I almost thought I was special, Jenny,” he broke the silence.

Jenny again? I grumbled something under my breath, before glancing at him. “If I’m wearing your shirt right in your presence then I don’t think that’s stealing.”

“I find you really interesting, Jenny. Would it be too much to ask for a list of other things you’d want to do to me?” He stood, stretched his body then let out a sigh. “It’s hard to find domineering women out there.”

“It’s Jenna. Jenna without a y.” I stood and folded my arms over my chest. I was fucking tired of him.

He nodded. Putting both hands into his pockets, he strolled over to the floor-to-ceiling window, stared at the busy street for a moment then turned to me.

“Jenna without a y, we’ll get back to talking about your kinks. But tell me, your application answers had nothing to do with the assistant role. Why did you apply?”

I swallowed a lump, my pulse quickening. “The answer had nothing to do with the role because that wasn’t the role I wanted.” Shifting my weight to one leg, I asked, “If my answers weren’t what you needed, why’d you hire me?”

“Curiosity. I saw the passport photo. You were the colorful lady who stood in the pathway two days ago when everyone else receded.”

“That’s why you gave me the job? Because of my outfit?” I gave him a black look.

He straightened then shook his head. “I could take the job back if—”

“He just rounded his interview. He should be inside now,” a voice said from outside. Then footsteps. “Mrs. Reed, I almost forgot. Mr. Weston said he was seeing someone now. I don’t trust him.”

My brows drew together and I tilted my head to Weston. He was frozen, wearing a pensive look as the second voice seeped beneath the doorway.

“Pauline, you can leave now. I did see the interview.”

My heartbeat increased. How did I forget Weston was seeing someone? And if the woman walking in now was his Mrs. Reed, then it was his mom. She was going to see me in his shirt!

I staggered back, twisting a strand of my brown hair over my finger. Before I could understand what was happening, Weston’s towering frame was in front of me, one hand around my waist and the other cupping my face.

“I need your help,” he whispered, his breath warming my ear.

I opened my mouth to question him, but stilled when he roughly claimed my lips.
