Chapter 6 Unexpected Visitor

“Unfortunately, I can’t play your fake-girlfriend.”

Those were the exact words I’d told Mr. Weston before bolting out of his office with a racing heart.

And three hours later, I was sprawled on the couch in a black nightdress, still unable to get him out of my head.

“Hellooo?” Lyra’s voice rang in my ears.

I shuddered, turning to meet her intense gaze. She was seated on the other end of the couch, plotting a new book idea she’d gotten.

She dropped her manuscript, brows wrinkled. “Are you even listening to me at all or are you daydreaming about your boss?”

“I’m not dreaming about that douchebag.” I curled my trembling fingers around the mug in my hand, avoiding her gaze.

Work had closed by 6 o’clock and when I’d arrived home, I told Lyra, “I had a nice day at work, but my new boss is a dick,” making sure I didn’t spill a thing about the text, the kiss and the proposal.

Thankfully, forcing me to listen to her chaotic love story was her core priority, so she didn’t push.

“And back to my story.” She picked up her manuscript, a wide grin appearing on her face. “I sent Rowan a copy of my novel and he liked it so much.”

My head jerked back to her. “He did? Didn’t you both just fight because he was against you being an author?”

“We’ve settled.” Again. “He apologized and promised to support me in whatever I do.” She beamed, hugging her thighs.

I nodded, swallowing my judgmental response since my own love life was a total mess.

No one spoke again, as we both shifted our gaze to the television. But of course, I was only present in body while my mind was elsewhere.

Unconsciously, I lifted my hand, rubbing my thumb against my lips with a flushed cheeks. Then my phone chose that moment to ring under my thighs, pulling me out of my daze.

Why the fuck was I blushing? I quickly compressed my mouth in an angry pout and sat up, ignoring the squeaking couch. I took out my phone, and of course, it was COCKY BOSS.

With a speeding pulse, I declined the call, then flipped the screen over.

Lyra narrowed her gaze at me, tucking a strand of hair away. “Who’s that?”

“Um… it’s no one.” I forced a smile before changing the topic. “You’re lucky to have Rowan. Not everyone would be willing to change for someone they claim to love.”

Her lips curved into a sad pout, and she shifted towards me, her hand wrapping around my shoulder. Okay, wrong choice of topic.

I knew she thought I made that statement because of Dave. I mean, yes, I did. But strangely, for the first time, I wasn’t thinking of Dave. I was thinking of a shirtless Weston.

“Jenna, Is this about Dave?” She patted my hair. “Trust me, you’d find a better man. Just be sure of his intentions before getting laid.”

My stomach fluttered. Weston’s intentions were clear. A fake girlfriend, not like he was asking me to be his real...

I broke out of my trance and breathed out. “I’ve gotten over—”

My phone rang again. I stared at my phone. Still Weston. I ended the call quickly and dropped my phone before Lyra could catch a glimpse of who it was.

“Okay, I’m worried now. Are you sure you’re okay?” Lyra stood, her forehead wrinkling up. Then slowly, her expression changed to amusement. “Wait! Is that Weston Reed’s call you’re declining? Oh my God! It’s him, right?”

“It’s not him.” I rolled my eyes, taking a sip from the coffee I’d almost forgotten.

Squinting, she stared at me for a while then shook her head. “You’re hiding something, and I’ll get to the bottom of it.” She pointed at me before walking into the kitchen.

“Drama queen.” I glanced behind me and when she wa s out of sight, I choked out a a low groan, then sank into the couch.

Now alone, I unlocked my phone and dimmed the screen light, then tapped the message bar for COCKY BOSS.

Me: What do you want, Mr. Weston?

Him: You. I want you to fake date me.

I swallowed a lump in my throat, then put my phone down. Maybe if I didn’t respond, he’d give up.

Then my phone vibrated with another text. I grumbled, picked my phone again, staring at his response.

Him: You can’t ignore me forever, Jenna. You work for me.

Me: Work hours ended an hour ago, Mr. Weston.

Him: Does that mean you’d accept my proposal during work hours?

An unwelcome smile found its way to my lips. I pinched my lips together, scrubbing a hand on my face. Jesus, what the fuck was even wrong with me?

Me: It means I won’t be your fake girlfriend. Ever.

“I almost forgot.” Lyra’s voice echoed through the room, forcing me to press the power button.

I tilted my head and raised a brow, gesturing for her to speak.

“Rowan’s colleagues are hosting a party next week. I’m going with him which means you’re coming with me.”

“I’m not going to a party with you and your boyfriend. I don’t want to be a third wheel.”

“Then bring your billionaire boss with you.”

“Lyra!” I seethed and clenched my fist.

An uncontrollable wave of laughter poured from her mouth. “You’re still coming, though. Remember we agreed to party once you got the job.”

Well, not a job as Weston’s assistant. I didn’t say it out, instead I nodded. “Fine. But once it’s 7 o’clock, I’ll leave.”

“Sure, babes.” She smiled at me before wandering back into the kitchen. Not even a minute later, her voice echoed through the room again, “Rowan is coming in a few minutes to pick me up for shopping! I’ll pick a dress for you too.”

I didn’t respond. I turned my phone back on. Weston had read my text, but no response. Maybe he had finally given up.

The doorbell dinged that instant. Stretching, I took the television remote and reduced the volume. “Lyra, your boyfriend is here!”

“Coming!” She ran towards the door. When she got there, she paused and adjusted her floral gown, then tucked her hair behind her ear.

“How’d I look?” she whispered, spreading her hands out.

“You look breathtaking.” I chuckled and blew her a kiss. Her cheeks flushed and she exhaled before twisting the door handle.

I ducked my head so as to wave at Rowan, but the bulb at the entrance was switched off. I straightened and darted my gaze back to the television.

“Jenna,” Lyra called, stifling a laugh. “You have a visitor.”
