El contenido del sobre eran sus posesiones más valiosas; el único dinero que había podido esconder del hombre malvado que exigía cada centavo que ganaba en los últimos cinco años como forma de gratitud por proporcionarle un techo y una vieja fotografía.

Se apresuró a la cocina, pero tan pronto como entró en la habitación, se dio cuenta de inmediato de que había sido un tonto al esperar.

Paul miró el bote y luego a su madre.

Con esas palabras, Paul metió el bote con el resto de sus pertenencias y salió apresuradamente de la casa.
Cuando llegó a la estación de autobuses, pidió un boleto de ida en el primer autobús que saliera de Apple Bay; no prestó atención al destino. No le importaba a dónde iba el autobús mientras fuera lejos de allí.
A las siete y media de la mañana, el autobús abordó y comenzó a salir de la estación. Paul miró por la ventana, observando su idílica Apple Bay por última vez. Cada casa que pasaba, cada negocio, cada árbol, cada persona, todos tenían recuerdos para él, buenos y malos.
