Chapter 2 Watching Her Get Close to Another Man, How Can This Be Allowed?

After he finished speaking, the car window slowly rose, and he stepped on the gas pedal.

Nora watched the car's rear end, her heart sinking completely to rock bottom.

She staggered back a step as despair came crashing down on her.

Just as she was about to collapse onto the rainy ground, the car reversed back.

Samuel's cold voice hit her. "Get in."

Nora froze for a second, then immediately pulled open the door and got into the passenger seat, soaking wet.

"Thank you, please hurry..."

Samuel drove off with a dark expression, not responding.

The man drove extremely fast, silent the whole way, the pressure inside the car heavy and suffocating.

Nora gripped the seatbelt tightly, her eyes fixed straight ahead.

God, please, let Mia be okay...

When they reached the hospital entrance, before the car had fully stopped, Nora unbuckled her seatbelt and rushed out.

Samuel sat in the car, watching that slender figure disappear, his deep eyes flickering between light and dark.

Finally, he irritably loosened his tie and got out of the car.

When Nora arrived, Mia had already been moved to a hospital room.

Looking at her daughter's pale face, Nora's heart felt like it was being cut by knives.

Dr. David handed her a clean towel, his voice gentle. "Don't worry, Nora. Mia is out of danger for now."

Nora looked at him with red eyes. "Thank goodness you were here, otherwise, I really wouldn't know what to do..."

Outside the room, Samuel watched this scene with a dark expression, the air around him ice-cold.

Was that man her current husband?

They even had a child together?

Samuel clenched his fists tightly, the corners of his eyes turning red.

Once upon a time, she had nestled in his arms and said, "Samuel, in the future we'll have a baby that looks like both of us, with eyes like yours and a nose like mine..."

And what happened?

When something happened to him, she vanished without a trace.

When they met again, she was already someone else's mother, willing to lower her head—something she'd never done before—to him, her ex-boyfriend, for that man's child.

How ironic.

Samuel gave a mocking smile and turned to leave without hesitation.

Nora's entire attention was on Mia, so naturally she didn't notice Samuel outside the door.

"Dr. David, tell me honestly, what's Mia's condition right now?"

"She's stable for now, but the situation isn't good."

Dr. David's expression was serious. "The acute infection triggered signs of multiple organ failure. We must perform the bone marrow transplant surgery as soon as possible. We can't delay any longer."

"And... the cost?"

"Plus the follow-up anti-rejection treatment... the cost will be higher than our initial estimate. Roughly calculated, we'll need at least one million dollars."

One million...

Nora's legs went weak.

The gap of a hundred thousand dollars hadn't been filled yet, and now a million was weighing down on her.

Money, money, money—where could she possibly get that much?

"What about... the bone marrow registry... any news?"

Dr. David shook his head heavily. "Still waiting, but the chances are slim. It's best to have a match from a direct relative, like... Mia's father."

Nora closed her eyes tightly. "Okay, I understand."

In the afternoon, after coaxing her daughter to sleep, she went home to prepare some light porridge for her.

The old residential building had no elevator, and the motion-sensor lights worked on and off.

Nora climbed up to the sixth floor step by step, her hands shaking as she took out her keys.

Just as she opened the door, suddenly, a strong hand grabbed her, forcefully pushing her inside and pinning her against the door.

A tall shadow loomed over her without warning.

Nora looked up sharply, caught off guard by a pair of bloodshot dark eyes.

"You..."

Nora's heart tightened. "What are you doing here?"

Samuel didn't speak, his deep eyes locked firmly on her.

"Did you follow me?" Nora's back pressed tightly against the door. "Mr. Green, that's not very gentlemanly behavior."

"Gentleman?" Samuel moved closer, his warm breath hitting her face. "With you, do I need to be?"

The crisp scent of oakmoss and cedar was overwhelmingly oppressive.

Nora instinctively turned her face away. "Get out. This is my home."

"Home?" Samuel sneered, darkness layering in his eyes. "With that doctor and your daughter?"

Nora's heart stabbed sharply, and she instinctively gripped the keys in her hand tighter.

He saw everything? He saw Mia? And he thought Mia was her and Dr. David's daughter?

Nora instinctively wanted to explain, but the words stopped at her lips.

No, she couldn't explain. Mia's identity absolutely couldn't be known by the Green family.

Besides, he was getting married...

"It's none of your business," Nora said.

"None of my business?" Samuel grabbed her chin, forcing her to turn back and face him. "Nora, when you broke up with me five years ago, was it because you'd already found someone you liked? Huh?"

"When I was lying in the hospital between life and death, were you already with him? Is that why you could leave so decisively, without even looking back?"

"Nora, are you really that cheap?"

Nora's lips lost their color.

"So what if I am?" She met his furious gaze, her tone cutting. "Samuel, it's been five years. Don't you think it's ridiculous to come here now asking these questions? Or is it that... the great Mr. Green can't even let go of one woman."

Samuel's eyes turned frighteningly cold.

"Nora, aren't you being a bit too full of yourself?"

He leaned even lower, his nose almost touching hers.

"I'm just curious—can he satisfy you? After all, you and I used to do it six times a day..."

"You!"

Nora was both embarrassed and angry.

Samuel was indeed strong in that area, but he was about to get married—wasn't it too much to say these things?

Her temper flared, and without thinking, she blurted out.

"That just proves you don't last long."

She pushed him away forcefully. "Actually, I've been wanting to tell you—you're really average. Average stamina, average size, average everything."

Samuel's temple throbbed.

He held back and held back, then was successfully provoked into laughter.

Nora didn't want to talk to him anymore. "Does Mr. Green have anything else? If not, please leave."

Samuel calmed down. "That doctor—he's not right for you."

Nora found it absurd.

"Whether he's right for me isn't for you to judge. After all, my private life has nothing to do with you."

Samuel's jaw muscles bulged. After a long moment, the corner of his lips curved into an ambiguous smile.

"Fine, nothing to do with me, right?"

Nora frowned.

"I hope Ms. Brooks can say the same thing tomorrow."
