Chapter 1 Making A Mistake

Marriage.

The most unforgettable yet the most horrible; the most important yet the most destructive decision of one’s life.

Two souls, two lives, two hearts, were about to become one. A connection was about to last for eternity and all that for what?

Endless nightmares, depression, and eventually either death or divorce.

“Isn’t marriage the worst event of one’s life?”

My deep, husky tone came, tapping my foot impatiently on the ground.

My emotionless sapphire eyes glaring at the altar where the innocent bride stood, waiting for her soon-to-be husband to return from the bathroom.

Running my finger through my soft black, combed hair to shift the perfection, losing my posture by each passing second.

My all black attire looked tempting, adorned with a waistcoat that made my toned chest visible.

But, to be present so handsomely at that damned event was my choice?

Not at all.

Why?

Because I was forced by my Uncle and Auntie...

“What a waste of time,”

“Hmm? Did you say something, son?” My dearest Uncle, Andrew Hang, asked.

Losing patience bit by bit, ruining my heart-throbbing appearance, I began to rub my temples while exhaling in a frustrated tone.

“What the hell am I doing at a stranger’s wedding, Uncle?”

“Hey, Greg is my best friend, plus, you have met Alyssa a few times too, she is not a stranger.”

“To me, she is. I am not close to the Whitlock family. They are your friends and I am here, in this wedding, on your word,” I hissed, feeling out of place and completely uncomfortable.

“Because I am done hearing you have given up on love. You should see a wedding and realize how beautiful union of two souls feels like,”

“Such perceptions have died in me long ago,”

Rolling my eyes, done with the wait, I rose from his seat and began to walk away.

“Don’t say this- Ay- Vince! Where are you going?”

“I am going out for a smoke since the ceremony is not starting, I am getting bored,”

Waving my hand, I left the hall and stood in a random hallway to smoke calmly and empty my mind.

“Hmph. Union of two souls, my foot.”

With an immovable frown, I was speaking to myself, resenting this event, disliking each second here.

“Marriage can never be beautiful. It only breaks you apart until you learn to compromise and get used to the pain and negligence.”

As I was releasing my rage, speaking to myself and standing firm on my determination of being against marriage, I heard familiar noises from the other side.

“Hmm?”

Arching an eyebrow, intrigued, I finished my cigarette and decided to see what was happening only to find a couple kissing passionately.

‘Oh, it’s just a random couple-’ I almost turned to leave, ‘-Wait a minute,’

But then my eyes fell on the man, mouth gaping when I saw the familiar face kissing an unknown woman to his heartily extent.

With an inaudible gasp, I moved back.

“Wh-”

The tales of Alyssa’s blind love and faith were notorious, opposed by all, but for once I thought, maybe- just maybe- her love would win.

But no.

It was another myth.

‘Oh my God! Alyssa’s future husband is cheating on her! I have to do something and stop her from making a mistake!’

For once I thought about believing that one's love could overcome all, only to be proven wrong.

“Damn, I can’t get enough of you, Sadie, I need you. You are the only one for me,”

My jaw clenched. How dare they?

“I want you too, Ken, I can’t wait for you to throw that woman in her place and we could start our new life,”

Unknowingly, it pricked my chest to find that bastard belittling Alyssa’s love and being wrapped around the arms of another woman.

‘Again, and again, people like them never learn to value someone's feelings, do they?’

I thought furiously, retracing my steps but stopped when I heard the next words.

“Yes, Baby, don’t worry, once I will get all her assets and my position as the board member to get all perks, I will leave Alyssa and be all yours,”

‘The hell? He is using her too!’

Curling my hand in a fist, I walked away from the sight to search for Alyssa in order to show the result of her love.

How disheartening.

He broke her pride and I won’t allow such an immoral man to marry her.

“Those bastards. How dare they?”

Remaining stubborn, my hands shaking, breaths becoming unstable when I reached the altar and saw the pastor announcing.

Shit, I was late.

“If anyone has objections, speak up now or else hold your peace forever!”

“I DO!”

Instinctively, uncaring of the consequences, a voice liberated from within and echoed in the hall, halting the whole unsavory event.

“Huh? Who is it?”

All on my mind was- Save her.

Following my heart, I walked forth firmly, glaring outrageously at Ken for being a bastard and stepped onto the altar.

“What…?”

I enunciated, “I do,”

“Vince?”

Bewildered by my unforeseen appearance, the poor ignorant bride stepped forth, displeased when I interrupted her most felicitous moment.

“You? What happened? What do you want?”

My breaths hitched, shrinking my eyes when they collided with her hazel ones.

Just how much devotion they flickered for an undeserving man.

It unknowingly penetrated my chest as I ended whispering hopelessly, “Alyssa, don’t marry him,”

“Why not?” She hissed.

Glaring at me to move and let her continue the wedding but I was determined to bring his reality to the surface.

“Because he is cheating on you, he is lying to you, don’t believe in him, he is lying!”

“How can you say this about my Ken!?”

“Exactly! What proof do you have against me?”

Upon the scene I created, Uncle arrived hastily, pulling my arm to stop me from causing such an uproar.

“Vince? What are you doing?”

“I am saving someone’s life, Uncle. Greg is your best friend, your brother alike. His daughter should be like your daughter. You should save her from this cheater, I saw him kissing another woman,”

With fury enhancing, I pointed my finger contemptuously at Ken, announcing before all guests, ill-naming her ‘pure’ love.

“He is using her!  Alyssa is going to marry a cheater! He will ruin her life, she must stop this wedding at all cost,”

“And why should I listen to you? Who are you to interrupt our wedding?”

“Exactly! No one can love Alyssa as much as I do so stop your drama! I am the man she loves!”

“And that is exactly what you are taking advantage of, asshole!”

“Vince, enough!”

When a fight broke out between us, Alyssa lost her composure and slapped me hard across my face, earning a series of gasps from everyone while I stood flabbergasted.

“Stop creating a damn scene in my wedding!!”

Staggered, I touched the stinging cheek to feel the humiliation caused upon doing a good deed.

Overflowing with disbelief, my gaze greeted the blind woman, too blind to see Ken’s reality. She clutched her heart and expressed her most sincere devotion.

“Who are you to spout nonsense about my husband!? How dare you!? What the fuck is your problem!? This is my marriage, my husband, Vince,”

I stepped back, pity overwhelming me, her oblivion was too painful, she was not realising her mistake.

Holding my hand out compassionately, I let out a weak voice.

“But–”

Please, please, don’t make this mistake, realize, dammit!

“Vince, stop it,”

Everyone stopped me.

No one listened. They did not hear.

My struggles ended in vain.

Breathless, My desperate eyes scanned around, seeking help from anyone in the crowd, Uncle, her family, someone to support me but to no avail.

No one came.

“Can’t you see what is happening? Why aren’t you people speaking!? Save her!”

Shaking his head in denial, filled with disappointment to not create a fool of myself and gain further insult, Uncle held my shoulder.

“There is nothing you can do, Vince.”

“Why?!”

“BECAUSE HE IS THE MAN I LOVE, VINCE!”

A deadly shiver went down my spine, for a heartbeat when her scream reverberated, turning her senseless.

In that moment, I saw her hell in this loyalty.

I knew it was going to drown her, how it drowned my sister, Lucia.

I saw my sister’s reflection in her.

“Alyssa…?”

“How dare you disgrace him!?” Snarling, she hit my chest, “Who do you think you are before him!? What the fuck is your problem, Vince!?”

“My problem, dammit!? I am trying to save you!”

“I don’t need you! I want my Ken! Get lost! Leave and don’t disturb my event anymore!”

“If that’s so then I shall leave myself to watch this… this..”

Darting at the couple where the woman was mindlessly accepting the man before her as her world.

My chest constricted, I hated this sight. Incapable of enduring this, wrath became visible through the gritting teeth.

Curling my hand in a fist, and after a moment of contemplation, I found a befitting word for that marriage.

“This CRIME to happen,”

With my mind being clouded with fury, being proven right that marriage was the worst event of one's life, I walked away after receiving a humiliating slap on my cheeks for trying to save her.
