Chapter 3 Attempt To Convince

My plan was simple- Enter their lives. Save her. Help her get a divorce and return her safely to her parents.

Pretty easy, right?

‘Maybe this way... your soul will find peace too, Lucia,’ I thought sorrowfully, staring at the moon with my hands locked behind.

“Don’t worry, I will be there for you soon, Alyssa,”

My phone rang. It was a woman. I ignored it and went back.

I was determined but- ‘When I couldn’t help my sister, how could I expect myself to help her?’

Will I be able to do it?

I didn’t know but this time, I won’t sit back quietly and accept abuse, I would fight, he would raise voice against it.

Subsequently, on my hunt, I found the undesirable couple at a party, Ken being the most undignified man I had ever seen as usual.

“You damn woman,”

“Ken, please,”

With a dropped jaw out of shock, I saw Ken pushing Alyssa harshly that shifted my body on its own with the intent to protect her before he dealt further damage.

“I had enough of you-”

“What is your problem, how can you treat your woman like this?”

Twisting his wrist, I pushed him away, sending a warning glare in his direction to maintain distance.

Rolling his eyes, Ken scoffed, “And who are you to lecture me on how to treat my wife, Vince?”

“I am a man of dignity but apparently yours have died, Ken,”

“You don’t know that woman. She is very clever and manipulative, she was never worth it. My fault I married her,”

When Ken openly humiliated her, a gasp escaped the miserable woman, pushing me out of the way and whisper-yelled outrageously.

“How can you say this, asshole?! It is MY fault that I gave you a damn chance!”

All the love she used to hold faith in began to fade away.

Her respect, her pride, Ken murdered it all under his cold feet. With pure indulgence- not to mention.

“Shut up, dammit. First start the fight and now acting mighty because he is here. Aren’t you a shameless attention seeker, Alyssa?”

“Enough, Ken! Stop constantly degrading me!”

“You made me do this-”

“Enough, you two!”

Shouting warningly, they both realized their position and sealed their lips.

“What are you trying to do? Get a crowd here? Smear your respect and name and get this deal out of your hands? Because I don’t work with notorious ones,”

Losing his mind, Ken hit the wall and announced, “Fine then. Stay here, I am leaving!”

“You can’t do this to me, Ken. I didn’t bring my purse. How will I come home?”

“I don’t care,”

Openly insulting his wife, he showed her his middle finger and walked away.

What. An. Asshole.

“Ken-! Come back!- Ken!”

When I saw his demeanor, a vein popped on my forearm with a muted gritting of teeth.

Darting towards the unbothered man, a series of cursing flashed but for the defeated woman’s sake, I chose silence.

Else breaking that fucking jaw for the disrespect was not an ordeal for me.

“I.. uh…”

When Ken was gone, overflowing with embarrassment, a tear coated her pretty eyes. Ashamed, she glanced at me, nibbling her bottom lip.

How poor.

“I am sorry you had to witness it. Please don’t tell anyone about it,”

“I won’t, today. Tomorrow, someone else will. How many mouths will you shut, Alyssa?”

After taunting her, hoping that would knock some senses in her, I walked away.

Realize now, dammit.

Although I wouldn’t prefer staying longer yet to see if Ken had enough integrity to take his woman back home or not- I waited.

I waited, and waited. I wanted to see, so I prayed for Ken’s return.

But to no avail. He never came back.

“What a pig,”

Muttering under my breath, anger became visible through the clenched jaw as I went to Alyssa who was sitting on the steps outside with fresh tears glimmering in her once delightful gaze.

Her condition pierced an arrow in my chest, it hurt a part I never knew existed.

Walking forth, I also sat on the steps, “Did he really leave you?”

She nodded shamefully.

“Come with me, I will drop you off,”

Without questioning, she went to avoid further humiliation. The whispering was already echoing and she couldn’t handle it further.

The anguish shining crystal-clear and out of the blue, a mock escaped unknowingly.

“Are you regretting it yet? Or some pieces left in your heart to break before you leave him,”

Forcing a weak, very weak smile, she waved her hand, “It.. it was nothing. Just a little disagreement. We- We are fine,”

Stopping at the red signal, I glanced at her with furrowed brows. Her failed struggle to regain her lively posture was almost embarrassing.

Her desperate attempt to hide her unsuccessful marriage made me smirk dryly.

“Who are you trying to convince, Alyssa? Me or yourself? Because everyone knows ‘how’ your marriage is going,”

Her lips quivered, moistness stealing her vision when the love she had endless pride in ended up becoming her biggest insult.

As if reality gave her a hard slap.

Was that your ‘happy’ ending?- I almost mocked but hardly controlled myself.

“We will be fine eventually, you don’t have to worry about us, Vince,”

Yet she forced herself to be optimistic- What other option did she have?

“Who are you to me anyways to think for my betterment,”

I sighed out of extreme frustration, “I will say this again, for humanity, I am not ruthless enough to watch you suffer and stay in a toxic bond,”

“He will become better… things will be fine,”

My grip tightened on the steering wheel, “No, they won’t be,”

“Yes, you don’t know us, you are nobody to assume,”

“Don’t deny the truth,”

“You don’t force me to badmouth Ken, he will become better,”

“No, he won’t,”

“Yes, he will, Vince,”

I hit the steering wheel, “Stop being so delusional, dammit!”

I raised my voice furiously while glaring at her to halt the deliberate argument.

She flinched, body jerking when I lost composure but when I saw terror in those eyes, I inhaled sharply to hold authority over my scattering feelings.

We both knew she was only ashamed because I was proven right- She married the wrong man.

Her love wasn’t as strong as she proclaimed.

When I saw tears coating her gaze, I relaxed immediately. Exhaling to maintain the stern posture, I whispered the harsh reality.

“He will never change or become better, you will continue being tormented with zero support and then die from disappointment and depression,”

“What are you saying, V-Vince…?”

Her eyes widened in horror as if she saw the future in my statement.

“Please don’t say this.. please,”

When her body trembled, I raised my hands up defensively.

“Okay, okay, you don’t panic,” I said, loosening my shoulders, “Please,”

“Vince…”

“I-I am sorry for raising my voice too… I.. uh.. I don’t know what took over me. I am just worried for you,”

Forming her lips in a thin line, she hastily wiped her tears, refusing to display weakness before me and remained stubborn.

“I am fine…”

“Why don’t you seek help?”

“I don’t think you should meddle in my matters, Vince,”

“I merely want to help you, Alyssa,”

“I don’t need your help. You are dropping me home, that’s too much already. Thank you,”

Cutting the talks short, the second we stopped outside her place, she got out and rushed inside without even saying ‘goodbye’.
