Chapter 3
"Changed? Maybe it's just been too long."
Colin's bragging filled the car.
"Aaron, we just bought a new place downtown—over 3,000 square feet." He glanced back at me, eyes eager. "The renovation alone cost a fortune."
I nodded. "Nice."
"And Audrey got me a new car. Limited edition." Colin went on. "I told her not to, but she insisted."
"Cool," I said flatly.
Audrey watched me through the mirror, still waiting for me to crack.
Some things never change.
The car pulled up in front of The Regent.
Colin stared at the building, a smirk playing on his lips. "Aaron... you're really going in here? This isn't exactly your kind of place."
I pushed the door open.
"Wait." Colin got out too. "You're not getting scammed, are you? I'm just looking out for you—these places target vulnerable people. You have to be careful."
Audrey stepped out, her eyes skeptical. "Aaron, are you mixed up with the wrong crowd? Or some wannabe elites?"
Wrong crowd?
Like you two?
Before I could answer, my son came running out of the building.
I scooped him up with one arm. "How was your day, buddy? Have fun?"
"So much fun! I built a huge Lego set!"
Colin stared, then broke into a condescending smile. "Oh, I get it. You're working as a nanny for some rich family. That makes sense."
He stepped closer, all fake warmth. "Hey, we should exchange numbers. Audrey and I are thinking about having another kid. We could hire you—help a friend out, you know?"
Audrey nodded, oozing pity. "If you're struggling, just say the word. We're here for you."
She sighed dramatically. "It breaks my heart to see you like this. And your dad... he'd be so upset if he knew."
I went still.
I looked at them, my voice calm and cold.
"But my father's been dead for years."
Thanks to you.
