Chapter 6 Family Member Confirmation Form
Aurora stood frozen in place, watching the car speed away. Oliver's urgent words and Claire's tearful voice still seemed to echo in her ears.
A sudden, subtle cramping pain came from her lower abdomen. Aurora steadied herself against the wall and slowly crouched down, feeling her vision darkening in waves.
Finally, everything went black, and she lost consciousness completely.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw a white ceiling above her, with the faint smell of disinfectant filling her nose.
She moved her fingers slightly. Her whole body felt weak and sore, and the last image in her mind was Oliver's resolute figure walking away.
"You're awake? How are you feeling?"
A gentle male voice sounded beside her, carrying a hint of concern.
Aurora turned her head and saw a man sitting by the bed, wearing a clean white shirt and gold-rimmed glasses. His features were gentle, his manner refined.
"Liam?"
She said in confusion.
This was a senior she had known from college, also a well-known doctor named Liam Hayes.
Liam nodded slightly and handed her a glass of warm water.
"I was finishing my night shift yesterday and heading home when I saw someone collapsed by the roadside. When I got closer and saw it was you, I rushed you to the hospital. You're not mad at me for taking matters into my own hands, are you?"
Meeting his concerned gaze, Aurora shook her head repeatedly.
"Thank you so much."
Liam said, "Listen, did you know you're pregnant?"
Facing his direct question, Aurora nodded with a pale face.
"When I brought you in earlier, I had them run some tests. You're fine, just low blood sugar, and with emotional stress, it affected the pregnancy. You just need to rest well for a few days."
"Thank you, Liam."
Aurora was grateful.
If she hadn't been lucky enough to run into Liam, she'd probably still be lying on the roadside.
"Don't mention it."
Liam smiled. "But how did you end up alone on the roadside? When you're pregnant, you need to take better care of yourself."
Hearing him bring this up, Aurora lowered her eyes and didn't respond.
Seeing she didn't want to talk about it, Liam didn't press further. He just reminded her, "You're in early pregnancy and your health isn't great. You must keep your mood calm and avoid big emotional swings, or it'll be bad for both you and the baby. If you need any help, you can call me."
Facing Liam's care, Aurora nodded, and the hurt in her heart eased a little.
Liam didn't pry into her private matters. Instead, he casually chatted about college days, lightening the atmosphere considerably. Aurora's mood gradually calmed down.
Just then, a young nurse walked in carrying a medicine tray. Seeing Liam and Aurora chatting happily, she couldn't help but tease them with a smile.
"Dr. Hayes, you're so good to your girlfriend! Staying by her side the whole time and being so gentle. You don't know how envious the young couple next door is. The girl said her boyfriend isn't even half as thoughtful as you!"
Aurora froze at these words, then quickly waved her hands to explain.
"Nurse, you've got it wrong. Dr. Hayes isn't my boyfriend, he's my senior from college."
At her eager explanation, Liam frowned slightly, but in the end just nodded lightly, accepting Aurora's words.
The young nurse paused, then quickly apologized.
"Sorry, sorry! You two look so good together, I just assumed. My apologies."
As she spoke, she skillfully changed Aurora's dressing.
"But honestly, men as caring and considerate as Dr. Hayes are rare these days. The young couple in the next room—the girl just has a minor scrape, but her boyfriend is so worried about her, running around getting her tea and water. It's really sweet to watch."
The nurse's words pierced Aurora's heart like a needle.
Compared to that young couple next door, she and Oliver were like strangers who just happened to know each other.
The contrast made Aurora feel somewhat disappointed, though she tried to look on the bright side.
After all, she and Oliver had reached the point of divorce—how could they compare to a couple in the throes of romance?
"By the way, Ms. Sinclair, your condition requires a family member to confirm and sign off on the follow-up care plan. Please make sure to have a family member come by."
The nurse finished changing the dressing and reminded Aurora before leaving.
Family member signature.
Hearing these words, Aurora's eyes dimmed.
Her parents had died young, and after the Sinclair family fell apart, only Scarlett remained as her relative.
As for her husband in name only, Oliver, Aurora had never counted on him.
"I'll call Scarlett and have her come over."
Seeing Aurora had already taken out her phone to call Scarlett, Liam spoke up to stop her.
"She should be at work right now, shouldn't she? I can sign for you. As your attending physician, I know your condition best. I'll just let the nurse know."
He took on this burden, instantly saving Aurora a lot of trouble.
"Liam, I'm really putting you out."
Seeing her embarrassment, Liam smiled and patted her head, the gesture somewhat intimate.
"I'll go find the nurse."
He stood up and had just opened the hospital room door when he saw a tall figure standing outside.
The man had a cold expression, and when he looked at him, his face looked like someone owed him a fortune.
That person was Oliver.
"And you are?"
Liam frowned. "Sir, if you're lost, you can ask at the nurses' station."
As he finished speaking and was about to leave, Oliver blocked his way.
"Dr. Hayes, is it? No rush."
With that, Oliver strode to the bedside, looked at Aurora's pale face, then turned to look at Liam with a sharp gaze and icy tone.
"I heard you say you were going to sign for her. I'd like to ask, Dr. Hayes, in what capacity are you signing for my wife?"
Facing his aggressive questioning, Liam answered calmly.
"Hello, sir. I'm Aurora's senior from college, and also her attending physician. She collapsed on the roadside, and I was the one who saved her. I was just trying to help her sign the family confirmation form to avoid delaying her follow-up treatment."
His explanation was reasonable and well-founded, but Oliver let out a cold laugh, the smile not reaching his eyes.
"Is it your place as an outsider to sign a family confirmation form? I'm her husband, her legitimate family member. I won't trouble you with this."
Watching his behavior that seemed to be declaring ownership, Liam looked at Aurora without showing any emotion.
Aurora had a cold expression on her face, and her response was a rejection.
"Mr. Knight, I won't trouble you with my affairs."
Hearing this, Oliver's expression froze, and his hand hanging at his side unconsciously clenched into a fist.
Aurora was indeed protecting this man.
Could this Dr. Hayes be the person she had been secretly thinking about all these years?
