Chapter 86
As we got closer to the grates in the ground I could smell the earthy scent of damp soil filling my nose. This passageway felt like a haven like a place where we could take refuge but at the same time, it gave off an eerie feeling almost like a warning to be cautious.
Hector gestured with his hand indicating that I should go ahead of him. He kindly said, “You can go first.”
With a strong sense of determination, I nodded my head and cautiously made my way down into the dark damp sewer. As I stepped down I could hear the sound of water gently trickling underneath us forming an eerie tune that highlighted just how serious our mission was.
The darkness surrounded us completely but occasionally we could see brief flashes of light coming in from above. These flickers were small reminders that life was still going on up on the surface unaware of our deep and urgent quest for revenge.
We moved quietly through the dark paying close attention to everything around us. Our senses were heightened and each step we took seemed to resonate with our strong determination to succeed.
As we encountered each new twist and turn in our path I could feel a growing sense of anticipation building up inside me. This excitement was so intense that it almost made me forget the cold fear that was lurking in the back of my mind.
When we finally got close to the exit a strong feeling of urgency washed over me. I knew that we were about to enter Campani’s territory which filled me with both dread and adrenaline.
As we came out from the dark area we took a moment to stop and catch our breath. Our shadows mixed into the surrounding night making it hard to distinguish where one ended and the other began.
I raised my hand to signal for the group to stop because I noticed two of Campani's guards standing not too far away. Their eyes were moving quickly as if they could feel the tension in the air around us building up.
Just when I started to think about my friends Raf and Dahlia Hector suddenly took charge. His men began to move quietly and smoothly like predators getting ready to pounce on their unsuspecting target.
My jaw clenched tightly filled with disbelief as I watched how smoothly and effortlessly they carried out their attack. In just a few short moments they implemented their plan with a kind of ruthless effectiveness that was almost shocking.
Campani’s men barely had any time to react or protect themselves before they were suddenly attacked and taken down. They fell to the ground without making a sound as if it all happened too quickly for them to even cry out.
This whole event served as a stark reminder of just how serious and dangerous our situation was. We realized that we were in a very risky place and it made us aware of the great threats surrounding us.
Hector bent down low making sure to keep his voice quiet but still sounding strong and authoritative. He looked at the group of people around him and said “Okay everyone pay attention. I am going to take a small number of you with me to sneak into the house. The rest of you need to stay back where it’s safe. Find a good spot to hide and get your explosives ready. Make sure to wait for me to give you the signal before you do anything.”
A strong feeling of determination filled my entire being fighting against the sensible part of my mind that was telling me to be careful and think things through.
With a shaky voice that showed a hint of fear, I declared “I’m going with you.” Despite the tremor in my voice, I was filled with a powerful sense of purpose that made me firm in my decision.
“There's no way I'm going to allow that.” Hector quickly replied his forehead creasing in that usual manner that showed he was worried. “This situation is way too risky for you. I think you should stay with the other people instead.”
“Raf is inside that place. I cannot just sit back and do nothing while you are in danger and have to face this situation all alone without me.” I felt a strong wave of emotion rising within me. My eyes locked onto his with a steady and determined intensity.
Hector looked straight into my eyes almost as if he was trying to understand how strong my determination was. After a moment of hesitation, he finally agreed though it was clear he wasn't entirely happy about it.
“Alright.” he said “but you have to promise to listen to me. You must stay close by my side because we are going to need each other now more than ever.”
A sense of relief flooded through me filling my heart with gratitude and determination. I felt compelled to nod in agreement as he signaled for the selected group of men to follow us.
We quietly slipped into the shadows moving carefully toward the large intimidating front of Campani's house. The atmosphere around us was heavy with a strong sense of danger that lingered in the air.
My heart was racing and I could hear it beating loudly in my ears but despite that, we moved together with a sense of purpose that felt almost like a trained army.
Every single step we took was thought out in detail and carried out with great care. When we finally walked into the large and impressive rooms of the mansion we made sure to take advantage of the silence that surrounded us. We promptly attended to anyone slow or falling behind as we moved through the dimly lit hallways that were only lit by a faint glow.
As we continued to move forward it seemed as if time was both stretching out and bending in unusual ways. After what felt like a long journey we finally arrived at a big heavy door made of strong wood or metal.
When we gathered our courage and pushed the door open the sight that greeted us inside was so unsettling and frightening that it sent a sudden icy wave of fear coursing through my entire body.
I couldn’t shake the feeling of coldness that enveloped me making it seem as if the very air around us had turned frigid and unwelcoming.
Raf was standing there gripping his gun firmly in his hands. He looked very determined but at the same time, it was clear that he was struggling with his emotions. He was facing the dark and threatening figure of Don Campani.
As Raf looked at him he noticed that Don Campani's sneer—full of scorn and disdain—grew even wider as he moved his gun closer to little Dahlia who seemed so innocent and vulnerable in that moment…
