Chapter 5 Josephine Is Poisonous

From his pulse, it seemed this person's life stretched far beyond one month. So had his death in her past life also been caused by Seraphina?

That vicious woman was capable of anything.

While she was lost in thought, Karl's eyelids opened slightly. He was always alert. Even in deep sleep, he could sense danger around him in time. When Josephine reached out to him, he had felt it. But he sensed no malice from her, so he allowed it.

But now, looking at her, it seemed she was someone who understood medicine.

Acupuncture and massage?

In the field of traditional medicine.

And there was a faint scent on her body that made him feel vaguely familiar, as if he had smelled it somewhere before.

The car drove all the way to the Veyron estate.

Darian Voss got out and opened the door for them.

Josephine stepped out first, and a steel ramp immediately extended from the car, paving a smooth path.

Josephine turned and reached out to Karl in the wheelchair. Since she had promised to be a good wife to him, she would start with this gesture.

Karl's gaze fell lightly on her hand. Smooth and delicate.

Darian Voss's face stiffened. He was about to say that his master disliked being touched by others, but then he saw the young master place his palm on her slender hand.

Darian silently closed his mouth.

The row of servants waiting at the door to greet them were all surprised to see this scene. However, the Veyron family was strict, and although everyone was curious, no one dared make a sound.

The butler standing in front watched the two holding hands with a pleased expression.

Karl got out of the car, and Josephine released his hand. Karl looked at his now-empty hand and felt a sudden twinge of reluctance.

Darian pushed the wheelchair, and they all entered the house. Karl glanced at Josephine and said with a faint smile, "I have matters to attend to. Madam may do as she pleases."

Madam? Josephine's brows twitched slightly at the form of address. She was no longer the daughter of the Titan family, nor the young mistress of the Vance family. She no longer had to endure pressure from both families and struggle to survive.

She stood silently until Karl had taken the elevator upstairs, then turned around.

"Madam," the butler said with a sincere smile. "My surname is Wren, and I am the butler here. If you need anything, please let me know."

"Thank you, Butler Wren."

"Not at all, Madam. Your room is ready—first door on the left on the second floor. Rest for a while. Lunch will be ready soon, and I will call you."

"Alright." Josephine thanked him again and went upstairs.

The first door on the left. She pushed it open and found a warm, cozy room. The overall color scheme was warm-toned. On the two-meter bed lay two hearts made of roses nestled together. On the dressing table beside it, two figurines bowed to the heavens, full of joy.

On the right side of the room was a large balcony. Josephine opened the door and saw that two rooms led onto the balcony: one was hers, the other Karl's.

Behind the glass door, Karl lay motionless on the bed. The moment Josephine saw him, she quickly turned away to avoid any suspicion of peeping.

The closet was filled with a variety of designer clothes, though it was clear the owner's preferences were unknown, so a little of everything had been chosen.

Adjacent to the closet was a study, its bookshelves filled with new books mostly famous works by both domestic and foreign authors, as well as various reference books.

On the spacious desk sat a computer: the best value-for-money Obsidian V laptop currently available. It was still unopened, obviously prepared for the new mistress of the house Seraphina Titan.

Sigh. I truly can't understand how that wretched Seraphina managed to catch the eye of the Veyron young master.

She only remembered that two years ago, people from the Veyron family had suddenly come to Eryndor and said that the third young master of the Veyron family had taken a liking to Seraphina.

The whole matter had happened inexplicably. But at the time it had nothing to do with her, so she paid no attention to it at all, to the point that now, trying to recall it, it was all a blur.

At the same time, Reginald Titan received a call from a bank employee. "Mr. Titan, I'm truly sorry. The loan you applied for did not pass our review. I am notifying you now. I hope we can work together again in the future. Goodbye."

Reginald, who was drinking with guests, immediately froze.

"Reginald, what's wrong?" one guest asked.

Reginald quickly disguised his loss of composure. "It's nothing. Come, let's continue."

In the Veyron estate, Josephine walked out of the study and headed for the door. As she reached for the doorknob, a beautiful hand pressed against the door before her.

"Are you the new bride who married in from the Titan family?" asked a sharp-chinned beauty, Raelith Vane, a popular actress.

Josephine looked up and was surprised to see a celebrity in the Veyron family home.

Raelith continued, "Do you think that just because you've entered the Veyron family, you can become its mistress? Let me tell you, no matter what you're scheming, my third brother will never accept a woman like you with such a shady background."

Josephine was taken aback. She only knew that the Veyron family had three siblings: the eldest brother, Elias Veyron; the second sister, Isolde Veyron; and her husband, the third young master, Karl Veyron. She had never heard of this celebrity sister before. Was she a cousin or a distant relative?

"Even if my third brother is paralyzed, you are not the kind of woman he would ever consider," Raelith sneered. "So while he is away, you should leave immediately. The farther you go, the better."

These words ignited a flame of anger in Josephine's heart. In her past life, she had heard too many threats and endured too much unwarranted suffering. She had always been careful not to offend anyone. But she had given up everything, only to receive even more ruthless harm.

In this new life, must she still be submissive?

No.

This time, she would not tolerate mistreatment from anyone. She would live as she pleased, according to her own will. She would strike back immediately at anyone who treated her with malice or made her unhappy.

Sarcasm flickered in Josephine's eyes as she asked, "So, you are Lord Veyron's... mother?"

Raelith flushed with anger and snapped, "Are you blind? Do I look like someone's mother? Didn't you hear me call him 'Third Brother'?"

Josephine ignored her and continued, "Since you are not Lord Veyron's mother, may I ask which elder of the Veyron family you are?"

"Elder?" Raelith was so furious her face turned red. "I'm only twenty. Twenty! How could I be an elder?"

"So you are neither Lord Veyron's mother nor an elder of the Veyron family. Then what right do you have to make decisions for him? Even if I am a bride married off against my will, I am now his lawful wife. And you—who are you to him?"

"Are you deaf? Didn't you hear me call him 'Third Brother'?" Raelith raised her head in anger.

"So you are Lord Veyron's younger sister? But I've never heard that Lord Veyron has a sister. Judging by your indignant expression, could it be... you are his lover?" Josephine smiled teasingly.

Raelith pursed her lips, and a suspicious blush appeared on her face. "Stop talking nonsense. I... I..."

Josephine laughed. "It seems I guessed right. Then may I ask, what gives a lover the confidence to act so arrogantly in front of Lord Veyron's lawful wife?"

"Do you have a problem?" Raelith felt as though she had encountered a lunatic. "You're just a pitiful creature abandoned by your parents and fiancé, yet you still put on airs in front of me? Josephine Titan, do you really think you can become the third young mistress of the Veyron family with your reputation?"

She had figured out her background so quickly? This girl was not simple.

Josephine maintained a cold smile. "Actually, whether I have that possibility or not isn't important. What's important is that you definitely don't. If you truly had a chance to become the third young mistress, then there wouldn't be any need for a substitute bride, would there, Miss Vane?"

Raelith was angered by her accurate assessment, her face burning.

Was this really the person who had been betrayed by her own sister and forced to marry a paralyzed man?

Could it be intentional?

After all, the Veyron family in Eryndor was far stronger than the Vance family.

Thinking this, Raelith's gaze toward Josephine grew even more hostile, and she didn't hold back her words.
