Chapter 6 Behavior Loops
CHAPTER 6 "Behavior Loops"
We pushed deeper into the Ashfields. The flat ash plains turned into broken rocks that looked like giant teeth. Craters sat everywhere. Lyra kept her sword ready in her good hand. I walked with my hands open and breathed slowly.
"These rocks block the view," I said. "Makes it harder to spot trouble early."
Lyra nodded. She wiped sweat from her face. "Stay sharp. This area gets mean fast."
"Look at those six-legged ones," I pointed. "They barely move when you pass. Low reaction. But those two-legged ones turn quicker. They watch you longer. And that deep rumble underground keeps getting stronger."
"You see patterns in everything while we walk?" she asked. Her steps looked painful.
"I have to," I replied. "Miss one and we die. I am calling the six-legged ones Alpha. The fast two-legged ones Beta. And whatever makes that heavy breathing sound, Gamma for now."
Lyra glanced over. She shifted her sword. "You are naming them like pets."
"I am not naming them," I said. "I am cataloguing them. There is a difference."
"What is the difference?" she asked. She rubbed her bad shoulder lightly.
"Cataloguing tells me how they will act next," I explained. "Naming just makes me feel better about walking straight at them. I need this behavior to stay alive here."
She gave a small nod. "You think like a builder. Not like a fighter. It is strange."
We kept moving. The Alphas got thicker. I stepped ahead first. "This path stays clear for me. They do not react. Wait for my signal then come quick."
Lyra waited, breathing steady. I walked slowly. The Alphas stayed calm. I waved her forward. "Now. Move through."
She came fast. The Alphas turned toward her right away. One started to rise. "They see me," she said sharply.
"Keep going," I told her. I grabbed a rock and threw it far left. It landed loud. The Alphas shifted that way. "Your turn again. I will pull them off."
"This is too slow," she said through gritted teeth. Pain showed in her tight face. "How much longer do we do this?"
"Until we clear the zone," I answered. "Slow is better than death. Come on."
We repeated it again and again. I went first, checked the safe line, called her through, then made noise to draw them away. My legs burned. My mouth felt dry. I felt frustration building. I could walk free but she struggled with every step.
After a long push we dropped into a small crater to rest. Lyra sat down heavy against the rock. Her bad arm looked swollen. She did not complain. I took the last bread she offered and ate.
"Why did you come to Aethon?" she asked suddenly. She looked straight at me.
"I did not choose to," I said. I chewed slowly.
She sat up straighter. Surprise filled her eyes. "What? Everyone who appears here makes some deal or gets pulled on purpose."
"Not me," I replied. "I died at my desk. Late at night. My studio shut down. I was writing one last patch note. My heart gave out. Woke up here in the ash. No choice. No message."
Lyra stared hard. She rubbed her bad shoulder gently. "You died. And came here."
"Yes," I said.
"And this is real for you?" she asked. Her voice got softer.
"Apparently," I replied. I looked at the ground. "First time for me."
She stayed quiet for a moment. "Does that happen often? People dying and waking up here?"
"To me specifically? First time," I said. A tired laugh slipped out. "Back home I built game systems. Now I live in one. It feels like a sick joke."
She processed it. No calling me crazy. Just thinking. "That explains why you talk about the System like code. Like you know its tricks."
The ground vibration changed. It got stronger. I put my hand flat on the rock. The rhythm felt clear. "We need to move now. Whatever makes that noise is coming up. About four minutes."
Lyra stood fast. Pain crossed her face but she gripped her sword. "Lead the way. I will follow you."
We climbed out quickly. Behind us the ground split with a huge crack. The Gamma came up. Massive. Forty feet of gray rock-like hide and thick limbs. Its panel glowed even from far away.
I read it out low. "Ashfield Sovereign. Rank A. Territory the core. The system flag says do not engage. Registry exemption."
Lyra's eyes went wide. She stepped back. "The Registry put a Rank A creature here. And told its own hunters not to touch it."
"It is a guardian," I said. "The Ashfields are not just a trash pile. They protect something."
The huge creature turned. Not toward me. It locked straight on Lyra. Its body shifted with a deep sound that vibrated in my teeth. Then it charged. Fast for something that big.
Lyra raised her sword. Her arm shook. "Kane, run. I will slow it down."
I looked at the charge path. The rocks. My useless knife. The timer I knew ticked in the background. Thirty-eight hours left before purge. My fists clenched hard. Frustration and fear mixed in my gut.
"Okay," I whispered to myself. "Find the loop."
The creature roared louder. Rocks flew as it barreled closer. Lyra planted her feet. "Kane, what are you waiting for? Go!"
"I am not leaving you," I shouted back. "There has to be a pattern. A loop I can break."
The Sovereign swung a massive limb up. It aimed right at her. Lyra tried to dodge but her bad arm slowed her. She grunted in pain.
"Why is it only coming for me?" she yelled. "You are right there!"
"Because you are registered," I called. "I am not. But we can use that."
The ground around us cracked more. Smaller monsters poured out from new splits. All heading for Lyra. The Sovereign kept charging.
"Kane, talk to me," she shouted over the roar. "What do we do? I cannot fight this alone with my arm like this."
"I am looking for the loop," I said. My mind raced. "Its movement has rhythm. We can bait it. Use the terrain."
The creature got closer. Its roar shook my bones. Lyra backed up, sword ready despite the pain on her face. New red messages flashed in my vision even though I tried to keep everything closed.
[SYSTEM ALERT: BEHAVIOR LOOP DETECTED. GAMMA ENTITY ENTERING AGGRESSION CYCLE. NULL INTERFERENCE REGISTERED. ESCALATION IMMINENT.]
More cracks opened. Even bigger monsters started climbing out. The Sovereign’s limb came down hard. Lyra rolled away at the last second but cried out when she landed on her bad arm.
"Kane!" she yelled. "If you have a plan, now is the time!"
I stared at the patterns. The loops. The way everything reacted to her but not me. One mistake here and we both got crushed. The Sovereign turned for another charge. Its eyes locked on Lyra again. The ground shook harder. Help was not coming. It was just us against this monster the System itself protected.
And the purge timer kept ticking down.
