Chapter 3 The Dangerous Gamble
She stared at Wayne with a flat expression. 'Yes, I admit his condition is very pitiful right now. But he’s not the only one suffering in this world. Does he think my life is easy?'
Eva tried to restrain herself from getting angry. 'Okay, I'm fine. This is just a small cut. I must be strong.'
"Yes, this wound on my head is nothing compared to your pain. So, I won't be angry. Others won't understand until they have felt it themselves. But do you know? People who look perfectly fine may actually be harboring deeper wounds."
She continued walking and stood beside Wayne’s bed. "Not all wounds can be seen by the eyes. Perhaps right now you feel like your life is ruined. But you must know, out there, many people are suffering even more, even if they look perfect."
"I won't force you to accept this condition. However, wouldn't it be better if you focused on healing rather than lamenting your fate?"
Wayne froze, staring at the blood on the woman's head. He felt a twinge of guilt, but his ego was stronger. He wanted everyone to understand him.
"Don't talk nonsense! With my condition like this, who can heal me?"
"I can!" Eva answered confidently.
Wayne smiled bitterly. "Who do you think you are? Even famous doctors couldn't heal me. You don't need to lie just to please me.”
"I may be a nobody, but I can guarantee your recovery as long as you are cooperative. Treatment will not succeed if the patient refuses to work together. Success depends on the patient's fighting spirit."
"Bullshit! You’d better leave. Your arrival is just a waste of time," Wayne snapped.
"How about this? I promise to leave if there is no change in your health within one week. Please give me a chance to prove that no effort goes unrewarded."
Wayne turned his face away. "Whatever!"
Eva smiled. 'Yes! Finally, he's willing. Thank you, God.'
"But don't get excited yet." He turning back toward Eva.
"I’m not a person who is easy to approach. I’m not used to the presence of new people. So, don't expect me to let you touch me. You’ll have to work hard to make me feel comfortable and willing to accept your touch!"
She froze. 'Damn it! I thought he was cooperative. It turns out my struggle will be long.'
"Very well, I will try," she answered. 'But how am I supposed to treat him if he won't even let me touch him?'
The atmosphere in the room was silent for a moment. Eva stood frozen, unsure where to start. The therapy she intended to perform naturally required physical contact, yet this patient refused to be touched.
Amidst the tension, Eva’s phone rang. It was a call from Adam.
Ring! Ring!
"Noisy!" Wayne reprimanded.
"I'm sorry." Eva hurried to mute her phone. However, it kept vibrating.
'Why is he calling me at a time like this? Doesn't he know I’m struggling here? Damn! I still need his money.' Reluctantly, she answered the call.
"Excuse me, I have to answer this call first."
"Do you think I care? Get out!" Wayne answered curtly.
Eva stepped out of the room and answered the phone. "Hello, Mr. Adam."
"Why did it take you so long to answer?"
"I'm sorry, Sir. I am not unemployed. I am currently carrying out the task you gave me.”
"How is the treatment? Has there been any progress?"
'Good heavens! I haven't even been here for an hour. Why is he asking about that already?' Eva groaned internally.
"I apologize, Sir. It is still early. I just arrived here. We are only about to start the therapy."
"Is he willing to accept you?"
"Yes, I was welcomed very warmly," Eva replied, lying.
"Oh, really? I heard the welcome was quite 'lively'? It seems you really enjoyed being welcomed with a flower vase. Perhaps next time I should learn from Wayne."
Eva’s face turned crimson. "How did you know about that?"
"You don't need to be confused. It's not hard for me to know everything. Because of that, you must be careful. I can see your every move."
He said this merely to threaten Eva. In reality, he didn't know her face was injured. He only knew about the flower vase from his staff's reports.
"You are violating my privacy, Sir. This is unfair!"
"The law is in my hands. If you object, you are free to quit!" Adam abruptly ended the call.
Argh!
Eva shrieked. She was incredibly annoyed with him. "Why must I be faced with two annoying men? Is there not a single one who is normal?"
"Okay, I must stay calm! I can do this." Eva calmed her heart again. She re-entered Wayne’s room.
"Why do you like disturbing others? I am resting!" Wayne shouted, causing Eva to jump.
"I'm sorry, but I have to treat you. Therefore, if you don't want me coming back and forth, please allow me to perform this therapy. I promise it won't take long."
Wayne stared sharply into Eva’s eyes. "Fine! I’ll give you ten minutes. After that, you must get out of this room!"
"Okay." Even though the time was insufficient, it was better than nothing. She reached out to examine Wayne’s leg, but was surprised once again.
"However, if your actions have no effect, don't expect me to let you touch me ever again tomorrow."
Eva sighed deeply. She simply nodded, then pulled back the blanket covering his legs. She touched them to examine the condition of the wound. 'The wound is indeed quite severe. Just as the medical report I read last night indicated.’
She took her stethoscope and aimed it at Wayne’s chest. But he immediately snapped at her. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
She stepped back in surprise. "I only want to examine you."
"My leg is the one that hurts, why are your hands trying to touch my chest?"
'Good heavens!' Eva screamed internally.
"Even though it's the leg that hurts, the treatment must be done thoroughly so I can prescribe the right medication. If I make a mistake with the medication and you get poisoned, I’m the one who will be blamed."
Wayne glared at her. Eva moved forward again and examined the man’s chest and abdomen using the stethoscope.
The man swallowed hard as their positions became so close. He could see how serious Eva was in examining his body.
"Your heart rate is very fast. Has it been like this before?" Eva asked innocently.
Wayne became flustered. In truth, his heart was racing because of the woman, but he couldn't possibly admit it. He gripped Eva’s hand just as the doctor was about to examine his abdomen.
Grab!
Eva turned toward him. "Why?"
Wayne closed the distance between their faces. "Why go that far? Are you trying to examine me, or are you being perverted?"
Eva didn't realize that outside, a pair of eyes were watching. Their position looked very intimate, leading that person to a misunderstanding.
'So this is how the treatment is done? Last night she climbed into my bed, and now she wants to climb into another man's bed?' Adam’s jaw hardened.
