Chapter 3 The Moon Ceremony Begins

Chapter Three

By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, the entire Silver Shadow Pack had transformed into a breathtaking sea of silver and gold.

Thousands of enchanted lanterns floated through the air like tiny stars brought down from the heavens, their gentle glow illuminating every path that led to the sacred Moonstone Altar.

The scent of roasted meat, fresh bread, and wildflowers lingered in the evening breeze as music echoed throughout the village.

Warriors stood proudly in armor while children laughed and chased one another through the crowd, completely unaware that before the night was over, the fate of their pack would change forever.

For every young wolf who had reached the age of eighteen, tonight was more than a celebration.

It was destiny.

The Moon Goddess would reveal their mates.

Some would find love... Some would find heartbreak.

And one girl... would lose everything.

Inside the Ashwood home, Selene stood before the tiny mirror hanging crookedly on her bedroom wall.

It was the first time all day that she had truly looked at herself.

Her dress was old. The pale blue fabric had faded over the years, and despite washing and mending it countless times, several stitches remained visible near the hem. It had once belonged to her mother before being passed down to her.

It wasn't beautiful. But it was all she had.

She gently brushed her fingers through her long, dark curls, trying to tame the stubborn strands that refused to stay in place. After several failed attempts, she laughed softly to herself.

"I suppose this is the best we're going to get."

Her reflection smiled back, nervous, hopeful, and terrified.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

The door creaked open before she could answer, and her mother stepped inside.

Helena looked Selene over from head to toe.

Instead of complimenting her, she frowned. "Is that the dress you're wearing?"

Selene looked down at herself. "It's the only one I have."

Helena sighed impatiently. "You could have at least done something with your hair."

Selene instinctively touched her curls. "I tried."

"You clearly didn't try hard enough." Without another word, Helena removed a small silver hairpin from her own hair and tossed it onto the bed. "Use this."

Selene blinked in surprise. "Mother..."

"It's old. I wasn't using it anymore." There was no warmth in Helena's voice, no affection.

Yet... It was the closest thing to kindness Selene had received from her mother in years.

She picked up the delicate silver pin carefully, almost afraid it would disappear if she held it too tightly.

"Thank you."

Helena simply turned and walked away.

Selene stared at the little hairpin in silence before carefully placing it into her curls.

A tiny smile spread across her lips.

Maybe... just maybe... tonight would be different.

Outside, the sacred square was already overflowing with wolves.

The elders stood in a circle around the massive Moonstone Altar that rested beneath the oldest tree in the territory.

Its white surface shimmered beneath the full moon, glowing with ancient magic that had existed long before the Silver Shadow Pack itself.

One by one, newly turned adults approached the altar.

Some gasped as the mate bond clicked into place.

Others laughed through happy tears before running into each other's arms.

The crowd erupted into cheers every time another destined pair found one another.

Selene watched from the edge of the gathering.

Her heart beat faster with every passing minute.

She unconsciously rubbed her palms together.

"What if..." She swallowed. "What if I really don't have a mate?"

Before fear could consume her completely, a familiar voice interrupted her.

"You came."

Selene turned at the voice.

Elias stood behind her, wearing a dark navy ceremonial tunic embroidered with silver thread. For once, his usually unruly blond hair had actually been combed, making him look surprisingly handsome.

He smiled awkwardly. "You look..." His cheeks reddened. "...beautiful."

Selene blinked. Then laughed softly. "You're lying."

"I'm not," Elias said seriously.

"This old dress?" Selene asked, holding the dress in a gesture.

"I wasn't looking at the dress," Elias said. "You really do look beautiful, Selene."

A faint blush spread across her cheeks. "Thank you."

"You seem nervous," Elias said after noticing how she was fidgeting.

"I am," Selene admitted.

"You don't have to be." Elias tried to encourage her

She smiled sadly. "Easy for you to say."

Elias hesitated before gently squeezing her hand. "No matter what happens tonight... You won't be alone."

Selene smiled, grateful for his friendship. "I know. Thank you, Elias."

Neither of them noticed another pair of eyes watching from across the square.

Lydia!

Her lips curled into a mocking smile as she watched Elias holding Selene's hand.

Pathetic! Absolutely pathetic.

If Selene ended up mateless tonight... She would become an even bigger joke.

And Lydia intended to enjoy every second of it.

Trumpets suddenly echoed throughout the square, and the crowd immediately fell silent.

Every head turned toward the grand staircase leading from the Alpha Manor.

Alpha Ryker Blackthorne descended slowly, his black ceremonial robes trimmed with silver fur flowing behind him.

Power radiated from every step he took.

His broad shoulders, sharp jawline, and piercing golden eyes commanded attention without effort.

Behind him walked Beta Tristan and Gamma Rowan, followed by the pack elders.

Ryker stepped onto the stone platform before the Moonstone Altar.

His deep voice carried effortlessly across the silent square.

"Tonight...we celebrate the blessings of the Moon Goddess."

His gaze swept across the crowd.

"Tonight, the young men and women of the Silver Shadow Pack will discover the one person destined to stand beside them for the rest of their lives."

His expression remained calm. "But remember. A mate is not merely a gift. It is a responsibility. It is trust. It is loyalty. And above all... It is a strength."

Selene felt those last words linger in the air.

Strength! Strength!! Strength!!!

The one thing everyone believed she lacked.

Ryker continued. "May the Moon Goddess bless those who are worthy."

After his speech, the elders raised their staffs.

Silver light burst from the Moonstone Altar, shooting high into the night sky before exploding into countless glowing particles that drifted over the crowd like falling stars.

The Moon Ceremony... had officially begun.

One by one, names were called.

Each young wolf stepped forward to receive the Moon Goddess's blessing before searching the crowd for the pull of their destined mate.

Selene waited patiently for her turn. Her breathing grew shallower, and her hands trembled.

Minutes felt like hours.

Then... An elder unrolled the next scroll. His powerful voice echoed across the sacred square.

"Selene Ashwood."

The entire crowd fell unnaturally silent before whispers immediately spread like wildfire.

"The wolfless girl?"

"Does she really think she'll find a mate?"

"This should be interesting."

"I almost feel sorry for whoever gets stuck with her."

Selene closed her eyes for a brief moment. Then, drawing in a shaky breath, she stepped forward.

Every eye in the pack followed her as she slowly climbed the stone steps toward the glowing Moonstone Altar.

She could feel their judgment, pity, and ridicule. Yet she kept walking.

Because despite everything...

A tiny spark of hope still burned within her heart.

She stopped before the ancient stone and lifted her face toward the brilliant full moon overhead.

The elder raised his staff. "Place your hand upon the Moonstone."

With trembling fingers, Selene reached forward.

The instant her skin touched the sacred stone...

A pulse of silver light shot through her body.

The Moonstone blazed so brightly that the entire square was swallowed in a dazzling white glow.

And somewhere deep within Selene... something ancient stirred.
