Chapter 1 A Betrayal
[Raelyn’s POV]
“Congratulations, you’re pregnant.”
The doctor’s voice rings out around me, shocking me and terrifying me at the same time.
I only came for a checkup because I was feeling a bit under the weather, but this news wasn't what I was expecting.
How could I even allow such a thing to happen to me? And how was it even possible when I was on birth control when I did something so spontaneous?
You made a stupid choice. The small voice in the back of my head tells me. You let an impulsive decision lead you here while knowing that birth control isn't always a hundred percent, and now you are going to be a mom while not even knowing the identity of the father of the baby.
This realization alone makes my heart squeeze and my stomach churn while memories of everything return to me. Reminding me just how exactly I got into this position, and it was all because of the two people closest to me betraying me.
One Month Earlier
“Oh, yes, Daniel, that’s it.”
The voice rings out as I step into the house that I’ve shared with my fiancé for a little over a year. It’s coming from the second floor, the very place where we sleep, and as I listen to the sounds that accompany it, I feel my heart rate increase.
“Harder!”
I drop my bag on the ground and then begin to creep toward the stairs even though everything in me screams that this can’t be happening. As I move, the moans grow louder, switching from simple fucking to primal grunts and growls as I’m sure their lovemaking increases.
‘Traitor,’ I hear Talula, my wolf, hiss as I move up the stairs so that the scent of their sex attacks me. ‘How could he?’
How could he was right. Especially after everything we went through to be together due to the difference in our ranks.
Daniel was a beta heir for his pack and was currently training to take his father's position, while I was nothing more than a bastard pup with no pack or status to speak of. However, despite that, Daniel still convinced his family and his alpha to accept us since, despite my circumstances, I exuded alpha energy and therefore could at least produce a strong heir for his pack and family.
Fighting the urge to turn and leave, I move forward, slowly padding down the hall until I reach my destination, and then inhale deeply, bracing myself for what I’m about to see.
Just do it. I tell myself, squeezing the door handle in front of me. Just open the damn door.
Listening to the voice within me, I pull the door open and then watch as Daniel and the last person I expected to see turn their shocked gazes toward me.
Eyes widening, I take in the scene. Noting the two in front of me while my heart shatters into a million pieces.
“Why?” I whisper, unable to believe what I’m seeing. “Why is it you two?”
Lying on the bed in front of me isn’t only my fiancé, who I thought would never dare to hurt me, but also my best friend. If one betrayal wasn’t bad enough, two would certainly threaten to break me.
“Rae,” Daniel gasps, jumping off of Becky and then moving toward me. “It isn’t…”
“Isn’t what?” I ask, my gaze shifting from him to Becky, who quickly grabs the blanket and wraps it around her body. “Are you going to tell me that I’m not seeing correctly?”
How could he even start off by saying such a thing? There was no way to try to explain this that would make it okay. Not when he and someone I considered my best friend were fucking.
“You knew that this was my biggest worry when you were chasing me.” I whisper, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “You knew that I was always afraid that the person I let into my heart would betray me.”
When we started dating, I revealed to him how my father, who was an alpha, betrayed my mother, who was nothing more than a weak and powerless omega, and left her to raise me alone. He knew that after watching her work herself to death, I swore off love. However, after two years of relentless pursuit, I thought Daniel was different and that he would never leave me to go through what she did because of my womanizing father.
“It isn’t like that!” Daniel tries, reaching out in an attempt to touch me as I move out of reach. “Please, just…”
“Daniel,” Becky sighs, drawing our attention to her. “There’s no point in trying to hide things when they have gotten to this point.”
She was right, but why was she talking so calmly? Didn’t she realize that she was just as guilty as him in this whole thing?
“Since she has found out, shouldn’t you just tell her everything?”
As she speaks, she turns her gaze to me and smiles apologetically.
“We were going to tell you.” She says evenly. “But it seems we don’t have to now.”
“Going to tell me,” I repeat, my stomach squeezing. “You say it so casually, like it isn’t that big of a deal.”
“Well,” she shrugs, smirking. “If you think about it, it isn’t. After all, you’re the one that made him so lonely.”
Eyes widening, I take in what she is saying. Was she really trying to place the blame on me?
“You’re always working and going on business trips.” She continues, talking as if what they did was a normal thing. “You left him all alone, so it was only a matter of time before he went looking for someone else to take care of his needs.”
Her words are like a slap in the face as she speaks, and I can’t help but question who this woman standing in front of me actually is. She couldn’t possibly be the Becky that I knew and loved, not when she was betraying me so easily.
We met back in high school when I was going through the worst time of my life. My mother had just passed away, and I was left to navigate life alone. Since my mother’s death was considered murder, but they couldn’t seem to locate the one responsible for it, almost everyone in my school avoided me like I was the reason that it happened or that I was the one who caused her death, and if they got close to me, then they would end up suffering the same fate. But then there was Becky. Instead of avoiding me, she approached me and offered me the shoulder that I so desperately needed.
It didn’t take long for us to grow close, and before I knew it, she was the most important person to me. That is, until I entered college and met Daniel.
At first, he was simply kind to me, talking to me when my classmates wouldn’t and helping me when I was struggling. If I’m being honest, that alone left me wanting to draw a line because I found it suspicious, but Becky insisted that I should give him a chance because she felt he was making it clear that he was into me.
I couldn’t quite believe that was what was happening. After all, he was the beta heir of his pack and future leader of his family. How could someone like that possibly want anything to do with me? But then, he confessed to me.
Of course, I didn’t accept, but he continued to pursue me, and I found myself slowly but surely letting my guard down until I decided that maybe it wouldn’t hurt to try this love thing.
After that, we became inseparable, and when we graduated, we agreed to move in together once we were done job hunting.
Life was perfect in the beginning, but then, my job started to grow busy thanks to a random investor agreeing to join forces. That left me working long hours and frequently going on business trips. I knew that Daniel was lonely since he openly told me, but at the time I couldn’t just say no to what my boss wanted me to do.
“You chose work over your own fiancé.” Becky continues now, placing the blame completely on me. “If I knew that you would end up treating him that way, I wouldn’t have backed down back then.”
“Backed down,” I say slowly, unable to believe what I was hearing. “Are you saying that you liked Daniel back then too?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.” She responds, getting up from the bed and then pressing her body against Daniel’s back while her arms snake around his waist. “I liked him then, but he wanted you, so I decided to bury my feelings. But since you didn’t treat him right, I won’t be doing that anymore. Daniel belongs to me now, so you should just pack your things and leave.”
