Chapter 2 chapter 2

Chapter 2

Just like the past few weeks, Jason did not come home in the evening. Natalie only heard his voice in the morning, and he was asking for her.

“Mary, where is Natalie?” Jason asked their maid. She had been his nanny for as long as he could remember, and when he got married to Natalie, she was asked by the Thompson family to move in with the newlyweds and take care of them.

“She hasn’t come out of the bedroom since she returned home last night. She did not even have dinner.”

“Hmm, please call her for me. I have something important to discuss with her.” Jason said.

Mary went to the bedroom and called Natalie.

“Natalie, Jason is here, and he wants to talk to you.”

“Hmm,” Natalie replied from the bedroom.

She had cried for the better half of the night, and when she woke up, her eyes were puffy. She had applied some light makeup, and in order to lift up her mood, she had worn a bright red dress.

She knew very well that Jason hated the color red, but she was past the point of caring about what the man liked or disliked.

She was certain that he was here to hand her the divorce papers, and soon they would stop seeing each other.

Natalie left the bedroom in a poised manner. She had given Jason too much of herself for the past three years that she had completely forgotten about herself.

When she looked at herself in the mirror yesterday, she could not even recognize herself.

When Jason saw Natalie walking over with a fiery red dress, his anger surged.

He looked at her and asked coldly, “Natalie, why are you wearing red? You know very well that I don’t like that color. Are you trying to piss me off?”

Natalie walked over and a small smile hung on her lips, “Dear husband, you finally remembered your way home?”

Jason frowned. What was wrong with this woman? Was she out of her mind?

“What are you talking about? This is my house; do I need permission from you to come to my own house?”

Natalie giggled, “Please, don’t misunderstand me. I mean to say, it has been long since you came back that even the dogs and the cats don’t remember you anymore.”

“Natalie, stop with your madness. I am here to talk about something important with you, but before that, you should change into something else.”

“What if I refuse?”

Jason looked at her and frowned, “What do you mean? You know very well that I cannot stand that color.”

Natalie giggled. She seemed to be enjoying the show, “But I think this color looks good on me. Also, I am in the mood to wear a red dress today, and I did not know that you would be coming home today, so I will just do as I wish.”

Jason could not believe his ears. Did Natalie just disobey him? She has always been meek, and she would do absolutely anything he told her. But now, she was even talking back at him.

She knew very well that he loathed that color, but she had still worn it, and she even refused to go and change. Was she doing it on purpose? Or was she trying to get his attention?

“Natalie, stop being stubborn and do as I say.”

“Jason, it looks like you don’t know me. You know that I have always been stubborn ever since I was young. It was also my stubbornness that made me marry you in the first place.”

The thought of her failed marriage filled Natalie’s heart with bitterness. She was not willing to let go of Jason, but after what she saw yesterday, the pain of seeing him in the arms of another woman cut deeper than any physical pain.

The earlier she accepted reality, the better it would be for her and her unborn baby.

Jason looked at her and spoke, “Natalie, I always thought that I knew you, but turns out I was wrong all along. You are shameless, arrogant, and selfish. You don’t care about anyone but you.”

Hearing her best friend tell her such hurtful words, Natalie felt as if she had swallowed a fly and it was stuck in her throat.

Yes, she was shameless, arrogant, and selfish! But that was only because of the love she had for him. If she had not loved him, she wouldn’t even have looked at him twice.

“Jason, we grew up in each other’s company. Can you really say that you don’t know me?”

“That was what I thought. I thought that I knew you, but turns out, you are nothing but a spoiled rich heiress. You even conspired with my father to get Vivian kicked out of the city, or did you never think that I would one day find out the truth?”

So, Jason was calling her names because of that woman?

Ha!

She looked at him and sneered, “I did what I did because I loved you. Vivian was never a part of your life, and she was coming between us. That was why I had her sent away.”

“And you thought that that would make me love you?”

“I…”

“Natalie, I never imagined that you would be that scheming. I told you so many times that there was nothing going on between Vivian and me. She was just a close friend from college, but you still went after her.”

Natalie could not bear to continue listening to him speak up for that woman.

Jason could continue to deny it, but what she saw yesterday answered all of her questions. In fact, he seemed to have called her to that hotel just so he could flaunt his love in her face.

“I did send her away, but haven’t you made sure that you brought her back?”

“I brought her back because she had no one.”

“What do you want?” Natalie asked. Although she knew why he was there, she was hoping that he would say something different.

Jason looked at her coldly and said, “My dad had handed everything to me. He is not well, and he cannot continue to run the company. Now that I have everything, my father cannot continue to order me around.”

Natalie was getting impatient. She knew where the conversation was leading, so she cut Jason off, “Just get straight to the point.”

“I want a divorce. I have already signed the papers. Sign it and let us be done with this crappy marriage once and for all.”

Although Natalie had heard everything yesterday, and she had even mentally prepared herself for when the moment came, her heart still hurt after hearing Jason say the words out loud.

She thought that she would be able to handle it the moment Jason brought up the topic, but she had underestimated her feelings for Jason.

Tears threatened to fall from her eyes, but Natalie fought them back. She had always appeared strong in front of Jason, and she was not going to give him the satisfaction of seeing her pain.

Natalie took the papers from Jason and asked, “Is this what you really want?”

“I have been wanting an out for a long time now, so please don’t let it drag on for too long.”

“Is it because of Vivian?”

“This has nothing to do with Vivian, and for your kind information, there is nothing going on between Vivian and me.”

Natalie wanted to say something, but after thinking about it, she closed her mouth.

She threw the papers on the coffee table and said, “Give me some time to think about it.”

Jason sneered, “Whatever, just don’t keep me waiting for long.”

Mary had already prepared breakfast. Natalie looked at the dining table and said, “Will you have breakfast with me? Consider it me apologizing for every pain I have caused you all these years.”

“I am not interested in sharing a table with you. Just sign the papers and get the hell out of my life.” Jason left after saying that.

He did not even look back as he marched towards the door.

Natalie slumped on the chair. Her shoulders shook as she tried to fight back the tears, “Jason, I thought we would have a happily ever after. Turns out it was all my wishful thinking.”

Mary came over and hugged her, “Dear, there is no point in crying over something that is beyond your control. One day, Jason will realize what he has lost, and I hope that when the time comes, you won’t even spare him a glance.”
