Chapter 5 A Fight
Rachel wondered if Brad was really an emotionless robotic toy.
"Mommy, we're leaving too. Bye!" Rachel's other babies also waved their hands at her. They left while slinging their small school bags over their shoulders.
Rachel had so many kids that she could not take care of them all. She was still an 18-year-old undergraduate when she left the Neal family. She did not have much money and had to eke out a living. After giving birth to her babies, Rachel had to put them in boarding schools when they were nearly two. This gave her the time to work and support them.
After returning to the country, she put them in different schools, as she feared their extraordinary good looks would cause a stir. No one would pay them any attention if they were in separate schools.
Since her children were from a single- parent family, they were relatively independent and mature. They would get everything ready themselves and take a taxi to school on their own. They came home once a week. Rachel never had to worry about them.
But she felt very guilty in her heart. The fathers and grandparents of other children would shower love on them. They did not have to be so mature. Unlike those kids, her children had no one else but her.
In the blink of an eye, her babies had disappeared. Rachel looked at her little daughter, raised her eyebrows a little, and bent down. "My dear Angie, what about you?"
"I..." Angie's eyes sparkled, and she held her small cramped belly with her hands. "I have a stomachache today. Aw, Mommy, why don't you let me rest at home today? Could you take leave for me?"
Compared to her diligent and studious sons, this young daughter of hers was wily, silly, cute, and didn't like studying...
"Haha!" Rachel lifted her up. "I'll take you there myself!" "Ah!" Angie wailed mournfully. ...
Rachel worked at a hospital. She had not thought of working there at first, but decided to because of her daughter, who had been in poor health since she was a baby. Angie had been malnourished in the womb. Her brothers had robbed her of almost all the nutrition, leaving her puny as a child. She would often run a fever. Angie was diagnosed with leukemia when she was four, but she was lucky. She underwent treatment under the care of a rather eminent doctor and was cured.
But she could not be considered completely cured, since her leukemia might recur.
So Rachel went to work in the hospital and studied to be a doctor. That was entirely because of her daughter, since she was worried Angie might have a relapse. Rachel did not harbor any hope of finding her biological father. She could only shoulder all
the responsibilities alone.
In these years, other than working at the hospital, Rachel would also moonlight. She would only feel that her daughter was safe when she had enough money and the requisite medical skills.
Rachel looked at her watch. Janice Lee should be back soon. She did not know where Angie had gone off to play.
"Angie?"
"Angie?"
Rachel strolled down a long corridor and went out of the consultation clinic. She went to the back garden in search of Angie and saw three men surrounding a man beside a parked black car. The man, in a black shirt, had a tall and erect bearing. He was bleeding in the chest, quite obviously having just been stabbed. Rachel had a lot of experience treating such wounds, since there were often patients wounded in fights.
She saw a man walk up. He was apparently going to attack that wounded man again. Rachel seethed with anger. This was a communal hospital, not a place to pick fights and intimidate!
...
"What the hell are you doing?!" Rachel snapped. She strode toward them as she scolded them. "Don't you know this is a hospital? Who gave you the guts to make trouble here? Don't you know you'll upset the systematic operation of the hospital and affect the patients' treatment? Aren't you guys ashamed to pick on a man? Should I call the police now and let them handle the case?"
Those men were not far away. Rachel's sudden appearance and loud rebuking stunned them for a few seconds. They stared at the approaching Rachel, a strange expression on their faces.
"What are you looking at?" Rachel's expression turned frosty. She waved her cell phone threateningly. "I give you guys three seconds to stop fighting and get out of here!"
"Stop... fighting?"
Staring at Rachel, their expressions became even stranger.
Troy Langley heard her voice and raised his eyes indifferently. He eyed Rachel somewhat sternly. This woman coming at them was in a white doctor's uniform. She was petite, but had such an imposing demeanor. As she approached them, Troy caught sight of her small delicate face. A great rush of emotion surged in his eyes.
Rachel did not notice anything. She walked to them and stood in front of Troy, looking severely and indignantly at those men. "What? Didn't you hear what I said? Or do you think I'm just a doctor, a small fry? Must I shout here and attract the attention of the director and security guards? Will that satisfy you? I don't know what you guys are thinking. Why do you get into fights every day? You should be earning money, or spending time with your wife and kids if you're free!
"Even if you don't have a wife and kids, you must have elderly parents, don't you? Don't you know that you're breaking the law? Must you resort to violence, and leave this man's parents mourning his death?"
In fact, the eyes of all three men were twitching quite violently. "Fight? Who have we been fighting? Mr. Langley? How would we dare to fight him?" they thought. "Is this woman blind?"
"Doctor, you must be mistaken..." One of them tried to explain.
