Chapter 1 Prologue-History & Corruption
At the beginning of time, when the world was still soft and unshaped, a being of the elements was created to serve the people. The Elemental. She carried the blood of royalty, an ancient lineage woven from earth, fire, water, and air. She alone possessed the ability to command balance across all species, ruling not only the obedient but the dominant and defiant. Her reign was marked by compassion. She gave endlessly of herself to the meek, the innocent, the abandoned, and the abused. Shaping civilization through mercy rather than fear.
The world was tarnished by the violent, power-hungry species who rose to dominance. Their hunger for land, wealth, and dominion drove them to war. Villages were razed, families shattered, and the gentle races—forest nymphs, healers, seers, and small shifters—were hunted to near extinction. Fueled by a growing darkness, these conquerors sought not only territory but the Elemental herself. Her bloodline. The royal power that could bend the world.
The Great World War lasted for three generations. Entire continents burned. Seas boiled. The skies cracked under the weight of magic and steel. The Elemental fought beside the innocent, but even her power could not stop the collapse.
It was then that the Archons descended. Ancient watchers of the world, guardians of cosmic balance. They intervened to restore order, creating a new structure meant to prevent any single species from ever dominating again.
The Archons divided authority among ten individuals, forming the Hierarchy. A ruling body whose combined power equaled that of a king. To bind them together, the Elemental crafted a torc from the minerals and stones of the earth. A conduit allowing her to share her powers with the Hierarchy. This artifact became known as The Torc of Unity. A symbol of collaboration and balance.
To ensure the Hierarchy remained fair and representative of all species, the Archons established a brutal competition held once every century: The Blood Race.
For four relentless weeks, competitors from every corner of the world faced deadly trials designed to test physical strength, intelligence, strategy, endurance, and the willingness to sacrifice anything to survive. The stakes were absolute. To win was to ascent into royalty overnight, claiming one of the ten seats of the Hierarchy. To lose was to die.
For nearly seven thousand years, the system worked. Species lived freely without fear. The Hierarchy was diverse. Forest nymphs, gargoyles, dragon shifters, oni, seers, humans, and more. Lands thrived. Wealth remained balanced. The Elemental’s power flowed through the Torc of Unity, stabilizing the world.
At the turn of the nineteenth century, technological progress reshaped society and the Archons grand structure began to crumble. Machines replaced tradition. Weapons replaced diplomacy. The change was subtle at first, so subtle the Archons didn’t notice until it was to late.
The dominant species of the world manipulated the Blood Race. Rigging trials, sabotaging competitors, and ensuring their continued control. The Hierarchy shifted from a diverse council to a near-monopoly of the strongest, most violent lines.
The Torc of Unity was corrupted, twisted into The Gilded Shackle. A cursed tether binding the Elemental to the Hierarchy. She could no longer remove their access to her powers. She became a figurehead, a breeder of royal blood, a prisoner in her own palace.
With the arrival of the modern era and the Hierarchy corrupted, the laws of the land shifted dramatically. Chunks of history were lost. Destroyed limiting the knowledge and power of the people.
The Elemental Queen, once sovereign, was reduced to a ceremonial symbol. She carried royal blood but no authority. Her powers siphoned through the Gilded Shackle, used to strengthen the Hierarchy’s rule.
Opposing the Hierarchy became treason. Punishments were swift. Execution. Forced labor. Magical tethering. Erasure of lineage. Entire families could be punished for a single act of rebellion.
They fled.
Not in organized caravans or strategic migrations, but in desperate, midnight scrambles. Parents clutching children. Elders carried on makeshift stretchers. Their way guided only by senses sharpened by fear. They crossed the border in waves, slipping through cracks in the Hierarchy’s guard. Vanishing into the wildlands that even the Hierarchy dared not claim.
Beyond the Border lay the Unnamed Lands. A vast expanse of magic so old and untamed that maps refused to hold it’s shape. Forests shifted overnight. Rivers changed course. Storms rose from clear skies with sentience and intent. The Archons themselves had once warned that the land was alive. Ancient, primal, and indifferent to civilization.
In these lands, magic was raw and ungoverned. Creatures long thought extinct roamed freely. Stone-skinned leviathans, whispering wraiths, sentient storms, and forests that judged trespassers. The air itself shimmered with old power, reacting to emotion, bloodlines, and intent.
The refugees adapted. Finding a history within themselves that had long sense been forgotten. Over time, these scattered survivors formed the first Rebel Territories. Not through conquest, but through coexistence with the land and each other. The Unnamed did not welcome them, but it tolerated them. And in that tolerance, they found freedom.
The rebels grew in secret, generation by generation, shaped by hardship and the wild magic around them. They became a people forged by danger, united by loss, and strengthened by the knowledge that they had escaped the reach of the Gilded Shackle.
Their freedom whispered across the lands of the Hierarchy like a ghost story.
Tale traded in hushed voices, murmured between workers. Stories that couldn’t be confirmed, because no one was brave enough to travel across the border and risk the dangers of the Unnamed. Anyone who crossed, never returned.
Speculation spread like embers on the wind, igniting something ancient in the hearts of the oppressed.
Resistance didn’t begin with armies. But with individuals. Whispered questions of why. Why did they have to submit? Why were the citizens expendable? Why did the Queen have to be chained?
They came together, not by invitation, by instinct. In abandoned barns. Forgotten tunnels. The ruins of churches and temples built before the Hierarchy demanded servitude. Species that had once been divided by history and fear came together, standing shoulder to shoulder. Each carrying a piece of the world that had been stolen.
The resistance believed peace could be taken back. That the Queen could be set free once more. That the Blood Race, once a symbol of unity, could be reclaimed.
And now, as the century turns and the world holds its breath, the drums begin to stir once more. Across the kingdom, every species, every one of the forgotten and the hidden look toward the arena. The one hundredth Blood Race stands on the horizon. A trial that will decide not only the next Hierarchy, but the fate of the Queen, the resistance, and the world itself. The race is about to begin.
