Chapter 6 006

ROWAN POV

“Wow, you are so good at your job. How about I treat you to dinner tonight,” a nurse asked, smiling as she pushed her head backwards waiting for my response.

An obvious no–given the fact that I had rejected every single advances from my colleagues not because they weren't beautiful or smart.

But I had eyes for another–another that didn't even notice my emotions.

“Where's the file please?”

“Here is the file you asked for from the doctor. I would be in my office. If you need me for anything, please don't hesitate to dial the bell,” the nurse said, smiling as she walked away swaying her hips.

She was flirting rather but I was lost in my thoughts to even notice her.

Iris was behaving rather strangely, but I wasn't the type to push people as I feel they would open up to you if they find you worthy or feel like opening up to someone.

So I went about my activities in the lab. The morgue was filled with lots of bodies that were waiting for Iris and I to carry out a forensic evaluation on them.

One too many showing the oddity of their deaths.

I sighed and got back to work when I noticed a corpse head was sticking out in the cold rooms.

Who in their right mind would leave that door opened knowing we are trying to prevent the corpse from decaying and making work a stinky mess.

When I went to the block, I stopped in my tracks as there were blood stains right below it.

Blood? In a cold morgue? What is happening?

Opening the slightly ajar covering and my eyes nearly popped out of my sockets.

It was a new uncleaned body, bloody and the dead body hands were balled into a fist like it was trying to protect something before being killed.

I shouldn't have, I ought to leave and call the nurse to get it away from here. But curiosity was a bitch and she had me in a tight spot.

It said “Dial this number. They will come for my body, give it to them.”

The hand snapped back into its tight hold again, only this time tighter.

“What the fuck!”

I couldn't understand what was happening, but the cryptic lettering caught my attention.

How did the victim know he was going to be killed and had time to draft a warning? And more evidence showered that this wasn't planned such as the knife slashes showing that this wasn't planned but an unexpected attack.

I pulled out the corpse to take a better look after locking the lab’s door to avoid intruders from getting in and seeing this.

Reaching in and I noticed the boards were placed well and that was why the door hadn't closed properly even though it hadn't answered my question “Who dropped this body here?”

I reached for boards to pull it back in place but I heard the sound of a paper file while trying to do so.

This was the time for me to stop but I couldn't. Going through forbidden items was additive and I wasn't sure I would ever be able to stop.

I pulled it out with a groan escaping my lips as I hadn't been expecting it to be that heavy.

I looked around the lab one more time before opening the file and many notes, documents were in there.

Reading through them carefully and it struck me like a lightning bomb.

These were people's results and looking even more carefully brought it to my notice that I had seen these cases.

They were blurred out while Iris and I were working on them and after we got lots of leads on killers.

They had been covered by someone high ranking in this institution, breaching everything we had believed in.

I have to show this to Iris once she comes back, I'm not sure of myself to keep it away from her knowing we had been curious and pissed when the cases were closed right before our breakthrough and that we had to lie to people who had trusted us.

I ran back to the cold rooms– this time searching more carefully and I was convinced they had to be something hidden.

And right, there was another in the far right end corner, sitting pretty, dirty, filled with deadly secrets and waiting for me to unravel them..

“Good job,” A voice said behind me, clapping as I snapped my head towards the direction it was coming from with fear in my eyes.

“Professor MacKaye?” I asked, not believing my eyes and how he had gotten into a locked underground room with no window access.

“You would be the perfect prey. You would do,” he said, laughing as he pulled up a mask triggering my confusion.

Soon after the vents in the room started oozing out and was soon filled with white vapour.

I can recognize that smell anywhere.

“Chloroform Vapour?”

“Yes mixed with something very deadly. Good night. Be ready for your nightmare when you wake.”
