Chapter 10
Mason's red curls framed his face, which was set in a warning expression.
Her gaze was indifferent as she lowered her eyes slightly. "Remember, I'm your older sister. You shouldn't be disrespectful to me."
Mason was so angry he was practically jumping up and down, his red hair almost standing on end. "What kind of older sister are you? Who has an older sister that's a troublemaker like you? I think Bianca is better than you."
"Really? Are you comparing me to Bianca?" Amelia tilted her head, her eyes fixed on him, devoid of any emotion.
He opened his mouth, wanting to admitted but hesitated. A wave of regret washed over him. No matter what kind of person Amelia was, he shouldn't compare her to others. But now, he couldn't bring himself to back down.
Just as Mason was caught in his internal struggle, Maya walked over.
She was on the phone with someone, holding a box in her other hand.
Amelia felt a bit helpless, wondering why everyone seemed to need her attention.
Seeing the two of them, Maya quickly wrapped up her call and handed the box to Amelia, her voice tinged with concern.
"This is a piece of jewelry I got at an auction a few days ago. It's your first time attending such an event, so wear it. You don't want people to look down on you or gossip."
Just like at the Martinez family's party a few days ago, where her necklace had been criticized. Amelia didn't care about that, but if it could avoid some trouble, it seemed worth it.
After Maya left, Amelia opened the box in her hand. It was small, containing a dazzling necklace and matching earrings.
She pondered for a moment, not fully understanding Maya's actions, but decided to follow her advice and put on the necklace.
She placed the one Evelyn had given her back in the box, planning to switch it back later that night.
After getting ready, she went downstairs and waited for a while, almost losing her patience before Bianca finally came down.
Bianca was dressed in a vibrant pink dress, with delicate pink diamond butterfly earrings, her hair styled up. She looked quite pleasing to the eye.
With a smile on her face, Bianca linked arms with Amelia and said, "Amelia, I'm ready. Let's go."
The strong scent of perfume made Amelia pull her hand back. She stood next to William, pushing him towards the door.
Bianca felt a moment of awkwardness but followed them outside.
A Rolls-Royce was parked outside the mansion.
The driver stood by the car, holding a large black umbrella. Seeing them come out, he quickly opened the car door and held the umbrella over William, including Amelia.
Several elders from the Martinez family also came out. As William got into the car, Ava grabbed Amelia's hand and started giving her some advice.
Bianca opened the car door as well.
"Ms. Bianca Martinez, my car is only for my fiancée. You'll need to arrange another car. Sorry," William, already seated in the back with his eyes closed, suddenly spoke. He said sorry, but his tone carried no apology.
For a moment, everyone at the door fell silent.
Bianca's face turned red with embarrassment, and she quickly closed the car door.
She stood there, looking helplessly at Ava.
But...
William spoke up, "Housekeeper, please arrange another car for Bianca."
In that moment, Bianca felt a surge of resentment towards her mother, Ava. Despite being raised for over twenty years, she still couldn't compare to blood relations.
Bianca's car arrived quickly. She got in, and Amelia followed William into his car, discreetly giving him a thumbs-up.
The car slowly started to move, ready to depart.
Seeing them leave, Elizabeth pursed her lips and started talking to Ava, "Ava, Bianca was raised with such care, and now she can't even sit in her own sister's fiancé's car. To be blunt, it's like they don't respect you and Chase at all. These country folks are different, coming in and winning Mr. Brown's heart. Quite the tactics."
Ava's face darkened. No one could stand by while their daughter was insulted like that. "Enough, stop talking nonsense. We..."
Elizabeth continued, "No, Ava, this isn't about not letting Bianca ride in the car. This is..."
The sound of the car's engine stopped.
The window rolled down, revealing a face without makeup, silencing Elizabeth's words.
Amelia's face was tight, her gaze at them as if looking at something lifeless.
Amelia said, "Aunt Elizabeth, why do I smell something foul? Did you have breakfast in the bathroom today?"
Before anyone could respond, she continued with a look of realization. "No wonder your mouth smells so bad, worse than a country girl like me."
Elizabeth's face trembled with anger, pointing at Amelia. "You..."
Amelia continued, "I'm curious, how much did the Martinez family pay to marry you? Maybe they didn't pay anything? No wonder you're nothing like my mom. Cheap things are never good. In our countryside, no one wants a gossiping shrew like you. Nolan, your family is truly unfortunate."
The car sped away, leaving behind the echo of "unfortunate family."
Nolan and Elizabeth's faces were ugly with anger, cursing Amelia repeatedly.
Ava's eyes reddened. Maybe their relationship could still be repaired.
"Fiancée, did I do well? How will you reward me?" In the car, William turned and pressed his hand against Amelia's face, very close, his voice low and coaxing.
His uneven breath on her face made her blush.
Amelia replied, "Do it again."
Amelia's mind flashed back to the night William held her and comforted her.
She awkwardly pushed his hand away, leaning against the window, muttering softly, "That was our agreement. Why do you need a reward?"
A soft laugh sounded in her ear.
The laugh made Amelia even more uncomfortable.
She closed her eyes, pretending to sleep.
This time, Bianca arrived before them, waiting at the door.
Seeing Amelia pushing the wheelchair, she quickly came over, standing next to another girl.
Bianca said, "Amelia, this is Faye, the Jackson family's daughter. Today's event is at her house."
