Chapter 4 The Courtyard Collision
The courtyard was quieter than it had any right to be. Evening sunlight slanted between the academy’s spires, painting gold across the cobblestones, but it did nothing to soothe the unease gnawing at Alenya. Something about this evening felt… wrong.
She wasn’t wrong.
A sudden tremor ran through the ground, and the air around her quivered with unnatural energy. A scream, not human, but sharp, ragged, like tearing metal and pierced the calm. Alenya instinctively ducked behind a fountain, clutching her chest as a pulse of magic rippled outward, shaking loose petals from the hanging vines above.
And then she saw him.
Thane.
He appeared like a shadow stepping into light, his hair dark as midnight and his silver eyes glowing faintly, wild and untamed. Around him, magic crackled unpredictably, flames of violet and black dancing at his fingertips. Wolves emerged from the corners of the courtyard, their eyes like molten gold, their movements too precise to be mere animals.
Alenya’s stomach flipped. She had heard of demi-gods and their volatile magic, but this, this was chaos incarnate.
“Thane!” she shouted, and the word seemed to anchor him. His eyes flicked to her, wide and calculating, before he dove into the center of the courtyard.
A blast of raw energy shot from his hands, hitting the ground in front of him, sending wolves tumbling backward. They yipped and growled, circling with intent that sent chills up her spine. One leapt at him, teeth bared, but vanished in a flash of shadow magic before it could land.
Alenya froze. Her own magic stirred, responding to the energy in the air, buzzing like a live wire across her skin. And then without warning, Thane was running toward her, his hand outstretched.
“Take it!” he yelled. “Now!”
Before she could comprehend, her chest flared with a white-hot heat, a pulse of magic that made her knees buckle. Pain and power collided inside her. She fell to her hands and knees, gasping, and felt a tether wrap around her soul. Thane’s hand found hers midair, and the moment their fingers touched, the world changed.
A surge of energy knocked the wind out of her. Colors sharpened, and sounds magnified. She could feel Thane’s heartbeat, steady and strong, alongside her own. Her magic intertwined with his, raw and chaotic, forming a bond that was undeniable, unbreakable.
Fated mate.
The realization hit her in waves. Her palms tingled, her chest throbbed, and a warmth bloomed through her entire body, spreading in rhythms she had never known. She was… tied to him. Completely.
Thane’s silver eyes softened, just for a moment. “Alenya… Null Blood,” he murmured, his voice rough around the edges but laced with awe. “You’re… me. Part of me now. We’re bonded. Stronger together. Dangerous together.”
“Bonded?” she croaked, still trying to catch her breath. “You mean… fated?”
“Yes.” He gave her a small, tight nod, his gaze scanning the courtyard. “And now that you’ve awakened, they’ll come. The others. They’ll want to see the Null Blood… see the bond.”
Alenya swallowed. Wolves circled closer again, low growls vibrating through the air. Her pulse hammered in her ears. “The… others?”
Thane exhaled sharply, magic flickering around him like living flame. “Demi-god councils, the packs, rival factions… they won’t let this go. Fated mates with Null Blood… you’ve just painted a target on both our backs.”
Her mind whirled. She had known danger, yes, but never like this. She had never imagined she’d be tied to someone so powerful, someone whose magic could warp the very ground beneath her feet.
One of the wolves lunged again. Instinctively, she raised her hands. Her magic, wild, untamed and responded instantly. A shield of violet energy flared around her, shimmering and crackling as it repelled the beast. Thane’s hand gripped hers, stabilizing the surge, synchronizing their power. Together, they were unstoppable.
The bond thrummed, a heartbeat she could feel in her chest and his. She realized with a jolt that she could sense his intentions, his thoughts even with fragments, yes, but enough to know he was trying to protect her.
“You’re volatile,” he said, his voice low, urgent. “And I… am too. That makes us dangerous. To everyone.”
Alenya frowned, trying to process. “And to each other?”
A shadow of a smile flickered over his face. “Especially to each other.”
The wolf retreating into the shadows signaled something. Thane’s gaze followed it, calculating. “This isn’t over,” he said. “That was just a test. There are stronger forces coming, and they’ll know we’re bonded.”
She nodded, heart still racing. “Then what do we do?”
“Control it,” he said. “Control ourselves, control our bond. Train together. Survive together. Only then can we face what’s coming.”
Alenya’s chest tightened. To survive beside a demi-god, to navigate politics, magic, and fated mate bonds. It was overwhelming. But she could feel something else too, a spark of excitement buried beneath the fear. This bond was frightening. But it was also hers. And his.
The air shifted again. The courtyard’s shadows stretched unnaturally long, and the final wolf, larger than the rest, stepped forward. Its eyes glowed a deep amber, filled with intelligence and authority.
“Sign,” Thane muttered under his breath. “The real danger is here.”
Alenya’s hand tightened around his. The pulse of their bond thrummed, strong and fierce, warning her, guiding her. Wolves, volatile magic, and political games and they were all pieces in a puzzle she hadn’t even begun to understand.
But one thing was certain.
They would face it together.
“Ready?” Thane asked, his hand brushing hers again, the bond sparking between them.
Alenya drew a deep breath. “Together.”
The wolf let out a low, warning growl, and the courtyard shivered again. Night was falling. And the game of survival, power, and fated love had just begun.
