Chapter 2 The Crimson Spark
[Julian's POV]
Something is wrong with the air on campus.
I’ve felt it since the moment my leather-trimmed coupe crossed the perimeter wards of Obsidian Sanctum this afternoon—a frantic, clawing friction beneath my sternum, as if my inner beast is trying to tear its way out of my ribs.
"Julian, you're pacing again," Dorian says from the velvet sofa in our private VIP suite above the Conservatory. He doesn't look up from his tablet, where he's reviewing security logs for House Vane's estate.
"I'm not pacing."
"You've crossed the rug seven times in two minutes," Gabriel interjects, leaning against the archway with his arms crossed over his chest. "Your aura is leaking blood-red, boss. If you walk into the Gala looking like you're about to slaughter the freshman class, your father is going to have a field day."
I clench my jaw, forcing my breathing into a slow, measured cadence. "I'm fine."
I'm not fine. There is a strange, magnetic vibration pulling at my instincts, drawing my focus toward the main hall.
"Julian!"
Camille’s sweet voice cuts through the ambient noise as the double doors of the VIP balcony open. She glides toward me in a crimson silk gown that matches House Vane's colors. Trailing two paces behind her is a girl I have never seen before.
The moment my gaze lands on the stranger, my inner beast slams against my mental barriers with terrifying, brutal violence.
CLAIM. PROTECT. MINE.
The command roars through my blood so loudly it nearly brings me to my knees. I choke back an audible gasp, gripping the dark mahogany railing so hard the antique wood groans under my strength.
The new girl looks entirely unexceptional at a glance. Modest height, plain dark hair pulled into a low knot, wearing an off-the-rack black dress that screams commoner budget rather than aristocratic trust fund. She is visibly trying to make herself invisible, shrinking into the ambient shadows of the archway.
But her posture gives her away. Predatory. Controlled. Every footstep is calculated; her hazel eyes dart subtly, cataloging security guards, exits, panic bars.
She moves like a trained soldier.
Then she lifts her head, and her eyes lock onto mine across the dim conservatory.
The universe stops.
An overwhelming, feverish wave of pure energy detonates in my chest. My vision flashes crimson. Every cell in my body screams a single, ancient word that hasn't been uttered in House Vane for a century:
SOVEREIGN MATE.
"Julian?" Camille’s voice sounds muffled, like she’s speaking under thirty feet of water. "Julian, darling? Are you feeling alright? You've gone completely pale."
I can't draw air into my lungs. I can do nothing except stare at this girl who is looking back at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"This is my new roommate, Elena!" Camille says cheerfully, entirely unaware of the invisible seismic shift shattering the room. "Elena, this is my fiancé Julian, and his lieutenants Dorian and Gabriel."
Elena. The name tastes wrong on my tongue, like a bad translation.
She extends a pale hand toward me, her movement rigid.
I force my paralyzed body to reach out. The instant my bare fingers graze hers over the rim of her glass, an electric shockwave blasts through my nervous system. A visible arc of crimson static snaps between our skin.
Her pupils instantly dilate to black; her breath hitches into a sharp gasp.
She feels it too.
It's impossible. I have known who my mate was supposed to be since I was fifteen years old. The Pack elders verified the astrological and lineage alignment. Camille Laurent, daughter of House Laurent, the perfect political match to unite the two largest syndicates in the city.
I have spent four years building a life with Camille, preparing for the formal mating ceremony when we turn twenty.
This stranger... this commoner girl... cannot be my mate.
"Pleasure to meet you, Lord Vane," she says. Her voice is low, velvety, and laced with an icy edge that cuts straight through me.
She pulls her hand back as if I’ve burned her, shoving her trembling fingers into the folds of her skirt.
"Julian is team captain for the dueling league," Camille offers proudly, wrapping her arm around my waist. "He barely has time for anything else, but he's wonderful."
Elena doesn't glance at Camille. Her gaze remains pinned to mine, dark and dangerous.
"I'm sure he's exceptionally dangerous," Elena says flatly.
"What about you, Elena?" Dorian steps forward, his tone smooth, but his posture shifting into an aggressive enforcer stance. He senses the threat; he knows my aura is out of control. "What brings a scholarship student to Obsidian Sanctum mid-year?"
"Opportunity," she replies without flinching under Dorian's intimidating gaze. "I like complex systems."
"Systems?" Gabriel chuckles, though his eyes remain icy. "That's an odd way to describe an academy."
"I like understanding how powerful structures operate," Elena says, her eyes flashing back to mine. "Finding where they're fractured. Figuring out how easily they collapse when you pull the right pin."
It’s a declaration of war. I am absolute in that realization.
Before I can speak, she turns on her heel. "Excuse me. I need some fresh air."
She disappears into the crowd of students, leaving me standing in the center of the Conservatory with my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged beast.
"Well, she's certainly charming," Gabriel mutters.
"Julian?" Dorian’s hand lands heavily on my shoulder, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "We need to leave this room. Right now."
Dorian and Gabriel drag me into the private hallway behind the grand ballroom, locking the heavy oak doors behind us.
"What the hell was that?" Dorian demands, rounding on me. "Your eyes were glowing bright red! You almost bared your fangs in front of fifty high-society human guests!"
"I... I don't know."
"Don't lie to me!" Dorian's voice rasps with rare panic. "I felt the magical feedback from twenty feet away. You just Blood-Bonded with Camille's roommate!"
"No. That's impossible. Camille is my betrothed..."
"Your beast doesn't give a damn about political betrothals, Julian!" Gabriel snaps, pacing the corridor. "When a Sovereign finds his true Blood-Mate, the bond doesn't ask for permission!"
"Why does she look at me like she wants to slice my throat?" I whisper, slamming my fist against the stone wall. "Who is she?"
Gabriel grimaces, pulling up a security pad. "There's something worse, Julian. Did you smell her scent?"
"She smelled like rain and crushed roses," I growl, my inner beast reacting defensively to Gabriel even mentioning her.
"No, look at the biological sensor readings from the door ward," Gabriel says, turning the screen toward me. "She has no werewolf aura. No territorial markers. No blood magic resonance whatsoever. As far as the wards are concerned, Elena Sterling is 100% human."
Dorian pales. "A human mate? If your father finds out you're bonded to a human commoner while engaged to House Laurent's heir... he will have her executed before sunrise."
