Chapter 2 Stepping Into The Unknown

(Anna pov)

By the time I got home, the weight in my chest hadn’t eased, but the moment the door opened

“Anna!”

Lily’s voice rang out, bright and full of excitement as she ran straight into me, nearly knocking the breath out of my lungs.

“You’re late! I thought you forgot!” she said, pulling back just enough to look at me, her eyes shining.

I forced a smile, lifting the small cake box in my hand. “Forget your birthday? Never.”

Her face lit up instantly. “You got a cake!”

From the kitchen, Mum appeared, wiping her hands on a towel, her smile soft… but I could see it. The strain behind it. The way she tried to hide everything.

“Come in,” she said gently. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

The house felt warmer tonight, like for a few hours we were pretending life hadn’t fallen apart, I placed the cake on the small table as Lily hovered beside me, practically vibrating with excitement.

“Hurry up!” she whispered loudly.

I laughed softly despite everything. “Okay, okay.”

Mum brought out the food she had prepared, it was simple but special, something we hadn’t had in a while, we lit the candles and for a moment everything felt normal.

“Ready?” I asked.

Lily nodded eagerly, we sang together, our voices filling the small room, uneven but full of love.

“Happy birthday to you…”

Lily closed her eyes, hands clasped tightly in front of her as she made her wish, I watched her carefully, whatever she wished for, I hoped life would be kind enough to give it to her, she blew out the candles, laughing as she did.

“Cut the cake!” she said excitedly.

“Go on,” Mum encouraged.

Lily sliced through the cake carefully, like it was the most important thing in the world, and maybe tonight it was, we ate together, laughing, talking, pretending everything was okay, pretending we weren’t on the edge of losing our home and dad was just late from work, pretending my heart hadn’t been shattered hours ago, I didn’t tell them, not tonight because tonight belonged to Lily.

Later that night, the house had gone quiet, Lily had fallen asleep, still smiling, probably dreaming about her wish, I sat on my bed, staring at nothing, the events of the day finally catching up to me, a soft knock came at my door.

“Anna?”

Mum.

“Come in.”

She stepped inside slowly, closing the door behind her, for a moment, she just looked at me, really looked at me.

“You’re hurting,” she said softly.

It wasn’t a question.

I let out a small breath. “I’m fine.”

She shook her head gently and walked closer, sitting beside me.

“It’s time you leave this town, you are twenty-one years old, Anna,” she said quietly. “You have your whole life ahead of you.”

I swallowed, my voice low. “What life, Mum? We can barely survive here. How am I supposed to leave you and Lily?”

She reached for my hand, squeezing it.

“You are not meant to stay here and struggle the way I did,” she said firmly. “This town has already taken too much from you.”

My chest tightened.

“I can’t just leave you,” I whispered.

“You can,” she replied, her voice calm but strong. “And you will.”

I shook my head slightly. “What about rent? Food? Lily’s school?”

“We will manage,” she said. “We always do.”

Tears burned at the back of my eyes. “And what if I fail?”

She smiled softly.

“Then you try again.”

Silence filled the room for a moment before she added,

“And that boy William, you must forget him, news spread quickly in this town”

My jaw tightened.

“I will,” I said quietly.

But it still hurt.

“You deserve more than betrayal,” she continued. “More than this life.”

I looked at her, really looked at her, she was tired but strong and unbreakable, and I realized something, staying here wasn’t helping them, it was trapping all of us, I took a deep breath.

“Okay,” I whispered. “I’ll go, and I would be back to claim what rightfully belongs to us from Mr Cole".

Her grip on my hand tightened slightly, relief flickering across her face.

“You will find something better,” she said. “I know you will.”

The next morning came faster than I expected, I stood inside the coffee shop, apron tied around my waist, looking around like I was seeing it for the last time.

“Mr. Darius,” I called.

He looked up from the counter. “Hmm?”

“I’m leaving.”

He paused, then slowly set down what he was holding.

“City?” he asked.

I nodded, a small smile appeared on his face. “About time.”

I let out a soft laugh. “I need something more, For my family.”

He walked over, placing a hand on my shoulder, he has always treated me as his daughter and not someone who works for him.

“You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, Anna. You’ll be fine.”

“Thank you… for everything.”

“Just don’t forget us when you become big in the city,” he teased lightly.

“I won’t.”

That evening, as I packed my small bag, I made myself a promise, I would go to the city and find a job, I would make money and send it back home for Mum and Lily and for the life we deserved, and when I can, I will come back for Cole's holdings no matter what it took, because this time I wasn’t just running away, I was fighting for a future.

New York City was nothing like home, the moment I stepped out of the bus station, the noise hit me, cars honking nonstop, people rushing past like they were being chased by time itself, voices overlapping, sirens in the distance, everything moved too fast, too loud, too alive, I stood there for a second, clutching my bag tightly, this was it, my new beginning.

“ANNA!”

Before I could even turn properly, someone crashed into me.

“Whoa—!”

“Finally!” Mara’s voice rang in my ears as she wrapped her arms around me so tightly I could barely breathe. “You actually came! I thought you were going to grow old in that tiny town before making a move!”

I laughed, the sound surprising even me as I hugged her back. “It’s good to see you too, Mara.”

She pulled back, hands still gripping my shoulders as she looked me over dramatically. “Hmm… same face, same eyes… wait” she squinted. “Where's the glow? City life hasn’t upgraded you yet.”

“I just got here,” I said, shaking my head.

“Excuses,” she waved it off, grabbing my bag like she owned it. “Give me that. You look like you’ve been carrying the weight of the world and honestly, rude, because I specifically told you to bring only yourself and good vibes.”

I smiled faintly as we started walking.

“It’s really busy here,” I said, glancing around at the endless stream of people.

“Busy?” she scoffed. “This is calm. Wait till rush hour, that’s when survival instincts kick in, If you don’t walk fast enough, someone will emotionally run you over.”

I laughed softly, God… I needed this, after a moment, Mara’s tone softened slightly, "Anna…I’m really sorry about your dad he was such a nice man”

My chest tightened, but I nodded. “Thank you.”

“And Mr. Cole” she added, her expression turning sharp. “That man is a walking disaster. Him and his entire family, they are certified villains. If karma had a schedule, they’d be fully booked.”

I huffed a small laugh, She glanced at me sideways. “And don’t even get me started on William and Vanessa.”

I stayed quiet, I called Mara to vent about William and Vanessa and hearing her using some creative insults on them over the phone made me feel better.

“Actually no, let me get started,” she continued anyway. “Two backstabbing snakes finding each other? That’s not a relationship, that’s a public service. They saved the rest of the world from dealing with them.”

I couldn’t help it, I laughed, a real one this time, Mara grinned instantly. “There it is! I knew you still had it in you.”

She nudged me playfully. “Just say the word and I’ll handle them for you.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Handle them how?”

She cracked her knuckles dramatically. “Emotionally… or physically. I’m flexible.”

I shook my head, smiling despite myself. “Mara…”

“What? I’m serious,” she said, lowering her voice like she was planning something illegal. “We can take a quick trip back, I’ll ‘accidentally’ trip Vanessa into a fountain, and William… hmm… I’ll just glare at him until he questions all his life choices.”

“That’s your master plan?” I asked.

“Hey, intimidation is an art.”

I laughed again, the heaviness in my chest easing just a little.

Mara glanced at me, her expression softening. “You’re going to be okay, Anna. You know that, right?"

I looked ahead at the towering buildings, the endless movement, the unfamiliar world I had just stepped into.

“I hope so,” I said quietly.

She bumped her shoulder against mine. “No hoping. You’re here now. New city, new life, no toxic exes, no evil rich families breathing down your neck."

I let out a breath, new life, yeah maybe she was right.

“Come on,” Mara said, tugging me forward. “Let’s get you settled and tomorrow, we start your glow-up era.

“My what?”

“Your ‘I survived heartbreak and now I’m unstoppable’ era,” she said proudly.

I shook my head, laughing. “You’re ridiculous.”

“And you love me,” she shot back instantly.

I didn’t even hesitate.

“I do.”

And for the first time in a long while, I felt like maybe everything wasn’t completely broken, just maybe this was where things finally started to change.
