The first thing I notice when I wake up isn't the pain in my chest or the crystalline patterns spreading across my throat—it's the smell. Chemical death mixed with something sweet and rotten, like flowers left too long in formaldehyde.

I'm lying on cold stone, emergency lighting casting...
