Chapter 43
“I understand, King Harvey. Can we sleep now?” I ask as I lie back down.
King Harvey checks the candle he has taken out of my hand and blows it out. He lays down beside me, then pulls me into his chest.
The overwhelming feeling of love and protection relaxes me instantly.
“I love you, Elena. Goodnight.”
“I love you, King Harvey. Goodnight.”
I am off to sleep in maybe five minutes.
The dream I have is weightless but peaceful.
I awoke to sudden feral shouting.
“Harvey!! Harvey!!!” His mother howls as she pounds on the front door.
Sitting straight up in bed, I am shoved down by King Harvey instantly.
“Down, Elena.” King Harvey commands as he removes his hand from my chest. He motions for me to lie down, and I do, looking him in the eyes for some kind of explanation. He presses his finger to his lips and moves to the front door, my dagger in his grasp.
“Mother, I am trying to sleep.” King Harvey replies respectfully.
“That HUMAN!!!! Will cost us the family! Will cost us our honor! Let me in!” She continues to pound on the door with the strength of a grown man, and by the third hit, her fist goes straight through the door.
King Harvey inches backwards from the door to give a gap of safety.
Her left fist follows next, and the wood of the door splinters and cracks. A shard of wood is sent flying, then her head goes straight through the door. With one final thrust of her shoulders, she broke through the door.
She sets her untamed red eyes on me, glowing with rage.
When she takes one final breath to howl, King Harvey has no choice but to slap both of his hands over her mouth.
He tosses her over his shoulder lightly, back to the front door where she came from. King Harvey keeps his eyes on me as she charges at him from behind, pinning him to the ground and wrapping her hands around his neck.
Her talons connect and click together as she lifts his head as if to rip it off his shoulders.
“Harvey!!” I scream in cold fear as I scramble out of bed.
With whatever strength King Harvey has, he motions to the window behind him for me to escape.
I won’t leave him.
Throwing myself onto her back, I slap both my palms down onto her spine and think of the flame from earlier. When she rears her head back and howls in pain, I don’t stop. As my body begins to tremble, everything goes back for a moment when I land on something hard.
My body falls on top of King Harvey’s and when I open my eyes, his skin is pure white. His eyes are open but glossy.
He is dead.
I scream until I cough up blood.
“Elena?! Elena? Why are you screaming?!” King Harvey’s voice slips through the cracks of my melting sanity and I hold onto him for dear life in the pitch darkness.
He rocks me and shushes me as my nails dig into the meat of his strong biceps. Weeping, I have no other sanity than just to cling to him.
“N-Night..m-mare..” I manage between long sobs.
I want to throw up, my stomach stone and ash.
“You have my protection in every situation, Elena.” King Harvey soothingly whispers in my ear.
My stinging tears don’t stop me from looking up at him. “Even in your death?”
“What did my mate dream?” King Harvey brushes the hair out of my face that is stuck by my sweat and tears.
I exhale heavily to calm down before I begin. “Your mother broke down the door in a rage with her bare hands and then choked you out, killing you. You told me to run away.”
I break down in harder sobs at the thought of his dead body. King Harvey hugs me tightly and rests his head on mine but says nothing for a moment.
“I love you, Elena.” King Harvey finally says. “As mad as Mother can get at me, I do not believe she will kill me.”
“What if I can see the future, King Harvey? Doesn’t it make sense? Kill the only man that ever loved me and protected me…” I sob harder now, knowing how true that statement is. My father never cared, I never had a boyfriend or even a guy friend to ask me how I feel, then a protective husband is given to me.
“Oh, Elena, my love…” King Harvey. “I have never heard of a luna with those powers.”
“I am the first human luna!” I sniffle as I twist in his grasp to look him in the face. “What if this is part of new powers? What if I am right? It makes perfect sense, King Harvey, kill you and then she can just kill me or send me away and she takes power as next in line!”
“Technically your sister is next in line…”
I shove King Harvey away to sit at the edge of the bed and hyperventilate, the thought of her dying is worse than the thought of my own death.
King Harvey takes my face in his hands and forces me to look him in his silver eyes.
“I can’t let her die!” I pant between my words.
King Harvey nods. “She will not, nor will you.”
“Your mo-!”
King Harvey cuts me off with a stern shake of his head. “Tomorrow, we will practice your abilities and you will learn to create a shield. I packed mine; you will hold it and understand the weight and size. You will learn, Elena. I promise. You have a point about sight. I have no idea what abilities you will have, so we will see. We will master whatever you have, together.”
Nodding, I force myself to breathe deeply.
“I don’t want my sister to die, or you.”
King Harvey wraps his arm around me. “No one will die.”
“I must master my abilities. Training will cut into our honeymoon…”
King Harvey laughs. “There is plenty of time for your wifely duties and luna duties, Elena. I will make sure of it. I am not willing to deprive either one of us of any pleasures.”
I am too tired to blush at his comment, rather, I kiss both his cheeks and lie down. King Harvey follows me and holds me close again, this time, I face the door and stare at it until I drift off to sleep.
Waking up the next morning, I find King Harvey polishing his shield. I have never seen it, it is a silver simple shield with a small golden wolf in the center.
King Harvey greets me with a simple smile and hands me his shield.
“Feel the weight of it, Elena.”
“It is not very heavy, King Harvey.”
King Harvey nods. “Training will begin. Go to the front door and protect it.”
“The door?”
“Yes, use the shield.”
Doing as he says, I get up and go to the front door and place the shield on the door, then take it away. Getting used to the weight, I brace myself for impact time and time again.
King Harvey stands behind me and watches. “Very good form, firm feet. Now, Elena, I need you to picture Mother.”
“Why?”
“Recall the flame.”
“I am having trouble…”
“Elena,” King Harvey whispers in my ear from behind. “Do you want me to die?”
My heart stops and so do my lungs.
I understand this fear tactic, and I try to picture King Harvey’s mother but feel nothing but hot rage and fear. The shield now weighs nothing in my grasp as a red shockwave flies out of the shield.
“Whoa!!”
The door flies open as two working werewolves are walking down the hall.
When they see King Harvey beside me, they bow instantly.
“This my wife, Elena, my mate.” King Harvey says proudly, placing a hand on my shoulder.
The men bow again with pure shock on their face.
“A human did this? I never trusted a human to harvest luna power!” The taller worker gasps.
King Harvey grins with shining pride and I smile at him.
