Chapter 162

Embarrassment washed over me as I thought about Kendrick potentially reading all my desperate text messages to Lucas.

Hopefully Lucas deleted those before he ever got the chance. My cheeks turned red at the thought.

"I know this is putting a lot of doubt and pressure on you, but we need to continue this in order for my father to help us," Lucas explained as he silently urged me.

"No, you're right," I said. "I think seeing you today has helped me understand everything. Not being in contact with you for the past week has been really difficult."

Lucas's voice was filled with earnestness as he asked, "So, could you keep up with this for a little longer? Once my father fulfills his end of the deal and fixes your debt, things will go back to normal. I promise you."

I met his gaze, my hesitation evident. I tried to detect any lies on his face but couldn't see any. I wanted to believe that things would return to normal again, but what even was normal?

The White Wolf hung over my head every single day, and I still had no idea what it meant. What if Professor Black came back with horrible news? What if he found a discovery that changed everything? What would we do?

Wishing for things to be normal again was a foolish thing to do. But there was always a chance that it could be good again.

"I just miss you, Lucas. It felt like everything was going so well until suddenly it wasn't."

"Seems like that's our life now, isn't it?" Lucas asked with a small smile. He was trying to make light of the situation and I wanted to smile with him, but it was hard to pretend like I was fine with it.

It was a little funny how things always worked out like this for us though. Just as things are going down the right path, we get thrown a curve ball.

"When you told me you wanted us to take things slow, I didn't think it would mean all of this." I explained my frustrations. "I didn't think I wouldn't be able to speak or see you. It feels like we aren't even together anymore."

"I get it, Shana." Lucas sighed, his eyes reflecting the weight of our current situation. "I know I've been distant, and I'm truly sorry for that. I'm doing the best that I can. My father has been keeping me busy all week."

"There's no way we can at least meet once a week?" I asked, pointing between the two of us. "This right here has helped me so much. I feel better than I did earlier now that I know what's been going on with you."

"Talking to you has helped me, too." Lucas leaned in, planting a gentle kiss to my lips.

My hands went up to his cheeks, keeping his pressed to me as our lips continued to move over each other.

One of Lucas's hands went to the back of my head, and he ran his fingers through the long strands. It felt amazing and I heard myself make a low, satisfied sound in the back of my throat.

The sound only encouraged Lucas more and he began to trail his hands down my body. It was a little uncomfortable and tight to move around the small space of my car, but that wasn't stopping Lucas.

He rested a hand on my thigh and squeezed, making little pinpoints of electricity shoot up my leg.

"I promise I'll make it up to you," Lucas said into my mouth.

"How?" I asked back, my breath intertwining with his.

We pulled away from the kiss, and Lucas frowned as he looked at me.

He wiped under my eye and that's when I realized that a stray tear had escaped. I wasn't even aware that I had been crying.

"That's the thing... We need to find a different way to communicate without my father finding out."

Lucas went in for another kiss, this time, much sweeter. He pecked my lips, then my cheek for good measure before pulling away again.

"How can we do that?" I asked. "Does he have security following you everywhere?"

"I'm not sure, but I wouldn't put it past him," Lucas said. "This past week he's been having people all around us. I think he still doesn't fully trust me... I'm not sure what he's going to make of you showing up today either."

I cringed, feeling horrible again. "I'm sorry."

He shook his head. "Don't be. You did nothing wrong. I'm happy you came to see me."

I nodded, an idea suddenly forming in my head. "What if we start training again in the mornings, before school? That way, we can spend time together and I can work on controlling myself."

"Hm," Lucas thought for a moment. "That could be a good idea, but we can't train at my father's training facility."

"We can train at the school's training facility," I suggested. "It'll help me figure out my new strength or if I have any sort of power. Kendrick wouldn't be suspicious if we were just training, right?"

"Well, i wouldn't tell him that I'm going training with anyone. I would tell him that I'm going alone, but I don't think he'd notice anything." Lucas considered my suggestion. "We'd have to go before school starts so he doesn't question why I'm not using our facility."

"That sounds perfect!" I smiled. "That should give us over an hour to spend time together every day."

A small smile began to play on Lucas's lips. "Training only, no funny business. Do you understand me?"

I rolled my eyes, giving him a playful shove. "Tell yourself that. Plus, what if someone were to catch us? I don't feel like going to detention for kissing you."

"What's the fun in life if you always follow the rules?" Lucas asked with a sly grin.

"You're such a hypocrite!" I said with a laugh as he wiggled his brows suggestively.

I couldn't deny that the thought of us getting up to no good was exciting.

"On a serious note, all of that is a great idea, Shana." Lucas winked at me, making me blush. "We can meet at our usual spot outside of the hockey locker room tomorrow morning."

"Okay, you're sure that no one is going to be following you?"

"That early in the morning?" Lucas shook his head. "I doubt it. If anything, they'll follow me to the school's campus, but they won't physically come inside. They aren't allowed to. Nobody will know we're there together."

His reassurance made me feel calmer, but suddenly I realized how long Lucas had been gone.

"You should probably go..." I said, looking back at the building. "Before your father comes out here and has me arrested."

"He would never do that," Lucas said while he adjusted the tie on his suit. "But I guess you're right. I should go back."

I leaned in for one last kiss before he walked out of my door.

"See you tomorrow," he said with a smirk.

"Goodbye, Lucas." I gave him a small smile.

As I watched him walk back inside the lobby doors, I hoped that me coming here didn't make Kendrick lose any trust in Lucas.

Or else... we might end up in more trouble than I wanted to be in.
