Chapter 4 Why You?

Dawn’s Point of View

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Logan growled at me, his thick brows furrowed together.

I stumbled back almost immediately.

“No.” A gasp escaped my lips, shocked to see him and his friends here, but at the back of my mind, I expected it already—ever since I saw the portrait of some ‘Benjamin’ who looked freaking identical to Logan.

The realization of it all began swirling in my mind, and slowly, I began to put the pieces together. Logan being here means only one thing: Mom was getting married to Luther, who also happened to be Logan’s father.

In simpler terms, that means I’m fucked.

It’s bad enough that I go to the same school with him, and now I might have to be under the same roof with him for how long?

“Hey,” Sonny snapped his fingers in my face, jerking my thoughts back to reality. “Cat got your tongue?”

“If you ask me, I think she is stalking you, Logan.” Henry joked, draping an arm on Logan’s shoulder, his hazel brown eyes piercing at me. “Are you here to see Logan?”

Sonny and Henry chuckled, but guess what, the joke wasn’t even funny, because my life was at fucking stake; Logan’s jaws tightened, a muscle ticked in them, just like me, he didn’t find the situation funny.

Maybe because he already figured it out.

I need to say something… I need to find something believable to tell his friends; they can’t ever find out about my current relationship with Logan. I have had a policy since I entered school, and that is keeping my private life off the table, which I intend to maintain.

“M-Mr. Ashford r-recently hired me.” I stuttered, and the hard look in Logan’s face softened almost immediately. “I work in this place; I have no reason to stalk Logan.”

My heart was in my mouth as I spoke, Henry and Sonny shared a look, and then they chuckled again.

“You'd better be careful of what you eat from now on,” Sonny teased. “You could be poisoned anytime soon.”

Henry fumbled for his phone in his own pocket, and then I heard the shutter sounds of his camera. I was used to this already, so I didn’t attempt to move or evade it.

“Dorothy will be thrilled to see this.” He chuckled as his fingers began typing very fast on his phone. “Do you have a maid custom outfit? Wear it so I can take proper pictures.”

Logan snatched the phone from him and deleted the pictures.

“You should keep this a secret first.” He declared, throwing the phone back to Henry.

“You’re no fun.” Sonny, the red-haired with freckles scattered across his pale skin, said with a small grin.

“I need to confirm this with my father,” Logan muttered before he grabbed my upper arm and dragged me off with him. We reached an empty room upstairs, and he slammed me into the wall, placing both hands at my side, caging me in.

“Now, tell me the truth, what the fuck are you doing here, Dawn?” his hot breath fanned across my face, and I took note of the minty flavor that blew across my face.

“I think you already know,” I answered.

“So, you’re that woman’s daughter?” He muttered. “That old bastard said something about a daughter, but it had to be you?”

“This is—”

The words were caught in my throat as he slammed his fist on the wall. “Fuck this!” he gripped my shoulders, shaking me violently. “Why you?”

“I don’t know.” I panicked, because I had never seen him this worked up before; among all my bullies, Logan had the most class. He hardly touched me, not because he had other people to do that for him, but he was just that prideful.

But today he was doing something he had never done before, he was losing his shits.

“Why you of all people?” He growled in my face. “It could be anybody, could be any fucking person in the world, but it had to be you.”

I tried to fight back, to shove him away, but he didn’t budge. It was like struggling against a rock.

“Do you think I want this?” I asked him curiously. “I would rather make a demon from hell my stepbrother than to choose you.”

“You can’t ever be my stepsister.” He slammed me against the wall again, and my back smarted. “I won’t ever allow it.”

I chuckled.

“There is nothing you can do; our parents are in love,” I confessed. “I have tried countless things to make sure they split, but everything was futile.”

He finally lets me go, his fingers threaded through his hair following a frustrating pattern, and he then paced across the room before stopping in front of me once more.

“I knew it, you’re a fucking opportunist,” He drawled suddenly. “You and your mother targeted my father on purpose, right?”

“Excuse me?” My eyes narrowed, his lips curved up into a bitter smile.

“You act like you don’t care about money, and you don’t give a damn about the bullying, but deep down it bothers you because you can’t be like us.” He growled in my face. “Did you do this on purpose? To get back at me for everything?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” I asked in horror. “Do you think I want to be anywhere near you? Who in their right mind would want to be in the same place as you?”

I shoved him away, stepping out of the small cage he made with his body frame.

“I covered for you in the presence of your friends, and this is the thanks I get?”

I pulled my shirt properly, stalking towards the door, Logan’s deep and serious voice stopped me again.

“No one can ever find out about you.” He said flatly. “You are a live-in maid my father recently employed, do you understand what I’m saying?”

I gritted the words through my teeth.

“Yes, your highness.”
