Chapter 5 Enough!!

The courtyard erupted into chaos.

Shadowcrest warriors surged forward as one, their movements precise and merciless, a force trained to overwhelm rather than hesitate.

Steel flashed beneath torchlight. Fangs gleamed. Howls rose into the night as wolves shifted mid stride, bones snapping and reforming without mercy.

Selene stood at the center of it all, the air around her vibrating with barely restrained power.

Diana screamed.

The sound cut through Selene like a blade.

The chains binding Diana flared brighter, digging cruelly into her skin as Lucan tightened his control. Diana collapsed to the stone floor, gasping, her body convulsing as magic burned through her veins.

“Stop,” Selene shouted, her voice breaking as she lunged forward.

Invisible force slammed into her again, harsher this time, sending her skidding across the courtyard.

Stone tore at her palms as she hit the ground. Pain flared briefly, then vanished, swallowed by rage.

Lucan stood at the edge of the steps, one hand clenched, the other resting calmly at his side.

“You see,” he called out, his voice carrying easily over the chaos. “This is why you must kneel. Power without obedience is destruction.”

Selene pushed herself to her knees, her chest heaving. Her vision blurred red at the edges. She could feel the wolf clawing at her skin, furious and desperate. The vampire hunger sharpened into something vicious, whispering that blood would make everything clearer.

She fought it.

She had fought her entire life.

Around her, Shadowcrest warriors closed in. A blade slashed toward her neck. Selene twisted instinctively, catching the attacker by the wrist and snapping it with brutal force. He screamed as the bone shattered. Another came from behind, claws extended, but Selene spun and drove her elbow into his chest, sending him crashing backward into two others.

Her movements were raw. Untrained. Powerful.

And still not enough.

A heavy blow struck her side, knocking the air from her lungs. She stumbled, barely staying upright as another strike followed. Her body absorbed the hits, healing almost instantly, but each attack drove her closer to the edge of control.

Lucan watched with keen interest.

“Yes,” he murmured. “Show me.”

Selene snarled, a sound that was not entirely human.

She turned fully toward Diana, who lay curled on the ground, trembling violently as the chains tightened further. Blood pooled beneath her.

Something inside Selene snapped.

The restraint she had clung to her entire life shattered in an instant.

Power exploded outward from her body in a violent wave, knocking warriors off their feet like scattered leaves. The ground cracked beneath her boots, fissures racing outward as magic surged unchecked.

Selene threw her head back and screamed.

The sound was primal. Ancient. It tore through the night sky and echoed off the stone walls, rattling windows and shaking the very air. Her eyes blazed red and crimson as her wolf surged forward, no longer restrained.

Bones cracked.

Her body shifted violently, taller, stronger, her muscles rippling beneath her skin. Claws tore free from her fingers. Fangs lengthened, sharp and gleaming. She did not fully transform, but she was no longer hiding either side of herself.

She was both.

The courtyard fell into stunned silence.

Lucan’s smile widened slowly.

“There you are,” he said softly.

Selene moved.

She crossed the distance between them faster than thought, her claws slashing through the air where Lucan’s head had been a moment earlier. He twisted aside at the last second, the strike grazing his shoulder and tearing through armor and flesh alike.

Blood splattered across the stone.

Lucan laughed.

“Yes,” he said, eyes glowing brighter. “You will be magnificent.”

He struck back with terrifying speed, his fist connecting with Selene’s jaw hard enough to send her flying. She crashed into a pillar, stone exploding around her as she hit. Dust and debris rained down as she pushed herself upright, shaking off the impact.

“You cannot overpower me here,” Lucan said calmly as he advanced. “Shadowcrest feeds me. Every stone. Every soul.”

Selene wiped blood from her mouth, her claws digging into the ground.

“Then I will tear Shadowcrest apart,” she growled.

She lunged again, and this time she did not hold back.

They collided in a blur of motion, claw against claw, power against power. Selene struck with ferocity, her movements wild but devastating.

Lucan countered with precision, his experience evident in every calculated blow. The courtyard cracked beneath them as they fought, their clash sending shockwaves through the gathered warriors.

Selene landed a brutal kick to Lucan’s chest, sending him sliding backward across the stone.

Before he could recover, she was on him again, slamming him into the steps with bone shaking force.

For a brief, breathless moment, silence fell.

Selene stood over him, claws raised, chest heaving.

Lucan looked up at her, blood streaking his lips.

Then he smiled.

“You still do not understand,” he said.

His hand closed around her wrist.

Pain exploded through Selene’s arm as dark magic surged from his grip, burning like acid through her veins. She cried out as her strength faltered, her knees buckling.

Lucan rose slowly, dragging her upward with him.

“You are strong,” he said quietly. “But strength is not the same as mastery.”

He flung her aside effortlessly. Selene hit the ground hard, her vision swimming as she struggled to rise again.

“Enough,” Lucan commanded.

The warriors surged forward once more.

Selene tried to move.

Her body refused.

Magic coiled around her limbs like chains, crushing her to the ground. She snarled and fought, but the more she resisted, the tighter the invisible bonds became.

Diana screamed again.

Selene turned her head just in time to see Lucan lift Diana effortlessly by the throat, the chains retracting as he held her suspended above the ground.

“Stop,” Selene pleaded, her voice raw. “Please.”

Lucan studied her, head tilted.

“Kneel,” he said softly. “Submit. And she lives.”

Selene’s body shook violently as she fought against the magic pinning her down. Her mind raced. Every instinct screamed at her to obey, to sacrifice herself to save Diana.

She forced herself to look at Diana.

Diana’s eyes met hers.

“No,” Diana mouthed. “Do not.”

Tears streamed down Selene’s face.

Lucan’s grip tightened.

Diana gasped.

“I will count to three,” Lucan said calmly.

“One.”

Selene screamed, her power surging wildly against the restraints.

“Two.”

The ground beneath Selene cracked further, her magic lashing out in uncontrolled bursts.

Lucan smiled.

“Three.”

Before Selene could answer, a deafening roar shattered the night.

The courtyard gates exploded inward, splintering under immense force. Shadowcrest warriors turned in shock as a massive figure burst through the smoke and debris.

Rex.

He moved like a force of nature, cutting through the guards with ruthless efficiency. His eyes burned with fury as he shifted mid charge, his wolf towering and lethal.

Lucan released Diana instantly, leaping backward as Rex collided with him, the impact shaking the entire courtyard.

Selene felt the magic binding her shatter.

She surged to her feet, power roaring back into her veins.

But before she could reach Diana, Lucan’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding.

“Take the girl,” he shouted.

Figures emerged from the shadows, seizing Diana and dragging her toward the inner halls.

Selene screamed Diana’s name and gave chase.

Lucan stepped directly into her path, blocking her once more.

“You are not done with me,” he said.

Selene’s eyes burned with hatred as the doors slammed shut behind Diana.

Rex crashed into Lucan again, their clash sending another shockwave through the courtyard.

Selene stood between them, torn, shaking, rage and fear tearing her apart.

Behind the closed doors, Diana’s scream echoed one last time.

And Selene realized, with devastating clarity, that this war had only just begun.
